  • The purposes of this study are to make an analysis the sensible degree in Korea by using the formulas prepared by Watanabe, and to divide the climatic classification by the sensible degree in order to apply in practical life. Most data(air temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, atmospheric pressure) are extracted from the "Climatic Table of Korea, Volume II(1961~1990)" issued by the Korea Meteorological Administration. As a result of this study, distribution patterns of the sensible degree are similar to isotherms when the wind velocity is zero, and then the sensible degrees are reduced with the increase of latitude. And western coastal and inland regions have larger values than eastern coastal regions in summer. However, the cont-rary distributions are shown in winter. When the wind velocity is not zero, distribution patterns of the sensible degree are influenced by the wind velocity. In summer, the values of central and southern inland regions are especially higher than the coastal regions, and most northern districts and some inland regions (Kangnung, Ulchin, Yongju etc.) have low values in winter. Then, the climate of Korea is divided into four patterns as follows : Yow means the sensible degree when the wind velocity is zero in winter. Yow > 3 : Jeju Island and southern coastal regions Yow = 0~3 : Most southern district and eastern coastal regions of central districts Yow = -3~0 : Most central districts and some eastern coastal regions (Hamheung, Youngheung, Won-san etc.) of northern districts Yow < -3 : Most northern districts and some inland regions(Inje, Hongcheon, Yang-pyeong etc.) of cent-ral districts.districts.

  • The experimental apparatus is designed and installed to measure the disc positions with flow velocity, $V_{open}\;and\;V_{min}$ for 3 inch and 6 inch swing check valves. The minimum flow velocity necessary to just open the disc at a full open position is referred to as $V_{open}\;and\;V_{min}$ is defined as the minimum velocity to fully open the disc and hold it without motion. In the experiments, $V_{min}$ is determined as the minimum flow velocity at which the back stop load begins to increase after the disc is idly opened or the oscillation level of disc is reduced below $1^{\circ}$. The results show that the $V_{min}$ velocities for 3 inch and 6 inch swing check valves are about 15.6% and 4.8% higher than the $V_{open}$ velocities, respectively. Although the experiments were done with the stable uniform flow, additional experiments will be performed to determine the effects of the upstream disturbances.

  • High power characteristics with vibration velocity were studied in $Pb(Y_{2/3}W_{1/3})O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$(PYW-PZT) ceramics by using the constant current method. Young s modulus $Y_0^E$ and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ are a function of the square of effective vibration velocity \upsilon_0$. The nonlinear proportional constants of the above functions indicate the degree of stability under the vibration level change. The stability of PYW-PZT ceramics estimated by these constants coincides with the results obtained through the heat generation. It was found that $Q_m$ was markedly decreased with increasing the vibration velocity, accompanying a lot of heat generation. The vibration hysteresis and dielectric loss according to the vibration velocity was reduced by doping $Fe_2O_3$to the ceramics. On the contrary, these losses was increased by doping $Nb_2O_5$.

  • Non-destructive tests are commonly used in construction industry to access the quality and strength of concrete. However, till date there is no non-destructive testing method that can be adopted to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beams. In this regard, the presented research work details the use of ultra-sonic pulse velocity test method to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beam. A detailed experimental research was conducted by testing four identical reinforced concrete beam samples. The samples were loaded in equal increments till failure and ultra-sonic pulse velocity readings were recorded along the length of the beam element. It was observed from experimentation that as the cracks developed in the sample, the ultra-sonic wave velocity reduced for the same path length. This reduction in wave velocity was used to identify the initiation, development and propagation of internal micro-cracks along the length of reinforcement. Using the developed experimental methodology, researchers were able to identify weak spots in bond along the length of the specimen. The proposed method can be adopted by engineers to access the quality of bond for steel reinforcement in beam members. This allows engineers to carryout localized repairs thereby resulting in reduction of time, cost and labor needed for strengthening. Furthermore, the methodology to apply the proposed technique in real-world along with various challenges associated with its application have also been highlighted.

  • Mechanical and electrical devices in various forms are used in many different fields. These can be exposed to external environmental factors such as shock. Therefore, a shock test machine is commonly used to test these devices and evaluate their shock resistance. In this test, the break-down or permanent deformation and malfunction of inner parts due to a high stress or acceleration can be evaluated. As part of a shock test machine, a velocity generator is needed to create shocks between objects. In this study, a hydraulic velocity generator was conceptually designed and an AMESim model was developed to simulate the velocity under different conditions. Simulation results using this model were compared with the test results from a reduced-size velocity generator, and we designed a velocity generator that fits the target payload and velocity using the simulation results.

  • When triple flames propagated in a diverging channel, the effects of fuel dilution on the lift-off characteristics of triple flames were investigated. A multi-slot burner was used to stabilize the lift-off flame especially at weak fuel concentration gradients. It was reported that there is a maximum propagation velocity at a critical concentration gradient in an open jet regardless of fuel dilution. The enhancement of a diffusion flame affected to increase the propagation velocity around critical concentration gradients. However, the influence of a confined channel on the structure of triple flames according to fuel dilution needs to be investigated compared with an open jet case. This study aimed to examine the effect of a confined channel on the structure and the propagation velocity of the triple flames according to fuel dilution. Lift-off height and propagation velocity of triple flames were investigated by employing three kinds of fuel compositions diluted by nitrogen (0%, 25%, 50% $N_2$), Fuel dilution reduced the propagation velocity of triple flame in a confined channel mainly due to the decrease of flame temperature in premixed branch. Despite the difference in fuel dilution, the propagation velocity has a maximum value at a specific fuel concentration gradient even though the critical concentration gradient increases with fuel dilution. And the critical concentration gradient in a confined channel is larger than that in an open jet due to enhancement of convective diffusion.

  • In the present study, we reduce the drag and lift fluctuations of the sphere by providing a linear proportional control. For this purpose, we measure the radial velocity along the centerline in the wake and provide blowing and suction at a part of sphere surface based on the measured velocity. Zero-net mass flow rate is satisfied during the control. This control is applied to the flow over a sphere at Re=300 and 425. We vary the sensing location at $0.8d{\leq}X_s{\leq}1.3d$ and find that the most effective sensing region coincides with the location at which minimum correlation between the lift and sensing-velocity directions occurs. As a result, the lift and drag fluctuations are significantly reduced.

  • Instrumented impact tests and compression-after-impact(CAI) tests have been used to evaluate the effect of temperature on the low-velocity impact characteristics of phenolic matrix composites reinforced with various woven glass fabric. Impact characteristics and damage area in laminates are evaluated by C-scan. It is shown that the extent of damage and residual compressive strength of the laminates vary with energy level and impact test temperature. The damage area increases with increasing impact energy and temperature. All these observations indicate reduced impact damage resistance and damage tolerance of the laminates at elevated temperature.

  • This paper proposes a 2-step Kalman filter model for land vehicle navigation using civilian-band GPS measurements. The velocity bias caused by the Earth#s rotation would be removed completely when applying this model. Because the linearization of velocity equations in this model is not necessary, the error is significantly reduced. The experiment reveals that estimated position error with stationary data is about 5m during a 15-20 minute interval. The other benefit of this model is that it can be feasibly applied as a GPS receiver module thanks to the small sizes of the necessary manipulating matrices.
