한우 송아지의 반전성열체 (Schistosomus reflexus in Korean native calf)

  • A case of schistosomus reflexes in Korean native female calf was observed macroscopically and radiographically. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The abdominal visceral organs were exposed. 2. The vertebral column bent laterally to the left, and the sacrum approached to the cranium by reflected caudal lumber vertebrae, presenting S-shaped lateral twisting of the vertebrae. 3. The right ribs reflected laterally and dorso-cranially from the 7th rib to 13th rib. The left ribs bent caudally from 8th rib to 13th rib. 4. The length of rudimentary 6th right rib was one half of normal size and the 7th right rib was one third. 5. The sternum was bifid split from the fourth sternebra through the xyphoid cartilage. 6. The diaphragm was intact and thoracic cavity was reduced in size. The lung and heart severely deformed in shape and size. 7. The liver markedly deformed in shape and thickness. 8. The pelvic cavity was reduced in size by compression laterally to the left. 9. The uterus horn, ovary, urinary bladder, and urethra were severely deformed in the shape and position.

Preparation and Characterization of Polypropylene/Waste Ground Rubber Tire Powder Microcellular Composites by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

  • In order to obtain 'value added products' from polypropylene (PP)/waste ground rubber tire powder (WGRT) composites, PP/WGRT microcellular foams were prepared via supercritical carbon dioxide. The effects of blend composition and processing condition on the cell size, cell density and relative density of PP/WGRT micro-cellular composites were studied. The results indicated that the microcellular structure was dependent on blend composition and processing condition. An increased content of waste ground rubber tire powder (WGRT) and maleic anhydride-grafted styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA) reduced the cell size, and raised the cell density and relative density, whereas a higher saturation pressure increased the cell size, and reduced the cell density and relative density. With increasing saturation temperature, the cell size increased and the relative density decreased, whereas the cell density initially increased and then decreased.

초음파를 이용하여 관찰한 자궁근종의 한의 치료 경과 고찰 2례 : 증례보고 (A Case Report on 2 Cases of Patients with Uterine Fibroids Observed an Effective Result on Ultrasonography after Korean Traditional Medical Treatment)

  • Objectives: We report two cases that have an effective result with Korean traditional medical treatment to two patients who have uterine fibroids, using transabdominal ultrasonography for checking the size of uterine fibroids. Methods: A 44-year-old patient and a 43-year-old patient were treated with an herbal medicine, acupuncture and cupping therapy. We followed up the symptoms and the size of uterine fibroids. Results: The 44-year-old patient was asymptomatic, her size of the uterine fibroid was reduced for 6 months. Also, the 43-year-old patient experienced that the symptoms such as urinary frequency, ovulation pain, heavy bleeding were improved and the size of the uterine fibroid was reduced. Conclusions: This results suggest that Korean traditional medical treatment if effective for both asymptomatic and symptomatic uterine fibroids and ultrasonography is useful for checking the effect of Korean traditional medical treatment. Further case series and studies are warranted.

Neuroprotection by Valproic Acid in Mouse Models of Permanent and Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia

  • Valproic acid (VPA) is a well-known anti-epileptic and mood stabilizing drug. A growing number of reports demonstrate that VPA is neuroprotective against various insults. Despite intensive efforts to develop new therapeutics for stroke over the past two decades, all treatments have thus far failed to show clinical effect because of treatment-limiting side effects of the drugs. Therefore, a safety-validated drug like VPA would be an attractive candidate if it has neuroprotective effects against ischemic insults. The present study was undertaken to examine whether pre- and post-insult treatments with VPA protect against brain infarct and neurological deficits in mouse transient (tMCAO) and permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) models. In the tMCAO (2 hr MCAO and 22 hr reperfusion) model, intraperitoneal injection of VPA (300 mg/kg, Lp.) 30 min prior to MCAO significantly reduced the infarct size and the neurological deficit. VPA treatment immediately after reperfusion significantly reduced the infarct size. The administration of VPA at 4 hr after reperfusion failed to reduce the infarct size and the neurological deficit. In the pM CAO model, treatment with VPA (300 mg/kg, i.p.) 30 min prior to MCAO significantly attenuated the infarct size, but did not affect the neurological deficit. Western blot analysis of acetylated H3 and H4 protein levels in extracts from the ischemic cortical area showed that treatment with VPA increased the expression of acetylated H3 and H4 at 2 hrs after MCAO. These results demonstrated that treatment with VPA prior to ischemia attenuated ischemic brain damage in both mice tMCAO and pMCAO models and treatment with VPA immediately after reperfusion reduced the infarct area in the tMCAO model. VPA could therefore be evaluated for clinical use in stroke patients.

스크류 제원이 스크류 앵커 파일의 인발저항 특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 축소모형실험 (Effect of Screw Geometries on Pull-out Characteristics of Screw Anchor Piles Using Reduced Scale Model Tests)

  • 본 논문에서는 지하굴착 혹은 절토사면에 적용할 수 있는 스크류 앵커 파일의 인발저항 특성에 관한 연구내용을 제시하였다. 이를 위해 스크류의 크기(직경) 및 피치길이 등 스크류 앵커 파일의 기하적 특성을 달리하는 모형 스크류 앵커 파일을 이용하여 모형실험을 수행하였다. 실험 결과 분석내용을 토대로 할 때 일정한 스크류 크기를 갖는 스크류 앵커 파일의 인발 저항력은 피치길이가 감소할수록 증가하는 것으로 검토 되었다. 또한 일정한 피치길이의 조건에서 스크류 앵커 파일의 인발저항력은 스크류 크기가 증가하면 일정 크기까지는 선형적으로 증가하나 일정 크기 이상에서는 증가량이 거의 일정해지는 것으로 검토 되었다. 본 논문에서는 실험결과를 스크류 앵커 파일의 다양한 제원과 인발저항 특성에 대한 상관관계를 파악할 수 있도록 제시하였으며 연구결과의 실무적 관점에서의 검토 내용을 기술하였다.

Patient's Factors Correlated with Prostate Volume Recovery after 5 Alpha Reductase Inhibitor Discontinuation

  • Purpose: The 5 alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI) reduces the size of the prostate and alleviates lower urinary tract symptoms. After stopping 5ARI, the prostate quickly recovers to its pre-medication size. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the restoration of prostate size after 5ARI discontinuation. Materials and Methods: Between March 2009 and May 2017, patients who visited an outpatient clinic and were diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia were selected and start 5ARI medication. After 6 months of medication, the patients stopped medication for 1 year. Meanwhile, we measured the prostate volumes of patients 3 times (before and after medication, after discontinuation) and divide the patients into 3 groups (maintained, intermediate, and restored) with recovered prostate volume ratio. After classification, we investigated the relationship between the variable factors (age, serum prostate-specific antigen, initial volume, reduced volume after medication) between groups. Results: Among the 147 selected patients, the mean age and plasma PSA level were $61.6{\pm}7.9$ and $0.8{\pm}0.6$, respectively. The mean initial prostate volume was $32.3{\pm}4.2ml$, which reduced to $23.2{\pm}3.2ml$ after medication. After one year of discontinuation, the mean volume was $31.4{\pm}6.4ml$, with restoration to 101.5% of the reduced size. We noticed a tendency that patients with faster prostate volume recovery were generally older than those with slower recovery; however, this was not statistically significant. Other factors showed no relationship with prostate recovery. Conclusions: When using 5ARI in elderly patients, continuous treatment seems better than intermittent treatment. If discontinuation is needed, short term follow-up is recommended.

  • In this paper, a new method to reduce the size of ROM in the direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) is proposed. In the case that ROM is used for sinusoidal value calculation, reducing the size of ROM is significant. So the power consumption is affected mostly by its bit width. In the proposed method, the ROM bit width is reduced by 1 bit using the phase subtraction and the approximation. The spurious level is better than 80㏈c and the power consumption estimated is 510㎼/MHz.

  • The effects of heat treatment on fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs) of Inconel 690 have been investigated in terms of carbide morphology and grain size. Cycling tests in air at room temperature have shown that FCGR in low stress intensity factor range (ΔK) region can be effectively reduced by increasing the grain boundary carbide precipitate size and grain size. Decrease in FCGR is attributed to the crack tip blunting at the precipitates of grain boundary chromium carbides.

  • Study on the analysis of sodium spray fire using Gaussian drop size distribution, which redistributes a droplet spectrum with given mean diameter if its size classes with critical diameter(D>8mm) occur, was carried out. In this case, the oversized droplets were reduced to a stable diameter. Results calculated by the code using Gaussian drop size distribution were in better agreement with AI experimental results than those of NACOM and SPRAY code. The effect of variance on pressure in the test cell appeared greatly by introducing Gaussian function, which could represent various sodium droplet size distribution. The increase of the variance with mean droplet size resulted had an important effect upon the pressure in the test cell.

  • Nanoparticle size of Titanium dioxide thin films was prepared by novel method. Particle size and surface structure of $TiO_2$ thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy(AFM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM). All thin films process were prepared at room temperature. Particle size was reduced from 100 to 30nm with increasing amount of $Ti[OCH(CH_3)_2]_4$ observed by AFM images. All thin films were irradiated for 5 minutes by white light. Increasing the annealing temperature, particles size was increased. In the $TiO_2$(40%) thin films was annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes, the particle size was about 10nm.
