In these ten years, the cavitation and erosion phenomena in the rudder have been increased for high-speed container ships. The cavitation in the rudder blades which is injurious to rudder efficiency is mainly caused by the main flow with a large angle of attack induced by propellers, and the erosion which occurs as a result of repeated blows by shock wave that cavitation collapse may produce was observed in the gap legion of the rudder. However, gap cavitation is not prone to occur in model experiments because of low Reynolds number. So, the viscous effect should be considered for solving the flow of the narrow gap. In order to predict the cavitation phenomena and to improve the performance of the rudder, the analysis of the viscous flow in the rudder gap is positively necessary. In this study, numerical calculation for the solution of the RANS equation is applied to the two-dimensional flow around the rudder gap including horn part and pintle part. The velocity and pressure field are numerically acquired according to Reynolds number and the case that the round bar is installed in the gap is analyzed. For reduced the acceleration that pressure drop can be highly restrained numerically and in model experiment, the cavitation bubbles can be reduced.

In general, the booming noise intensity at tunnel exit is strongly related to the gradient of the compression wave front created by high speed train entering the tunnel. This paper presents some results in relation with the compression wave front produced when the high speed train enters a tunnel. Four kinds of tunnel entrance shape with real dimensions were studied to investigate the formation of compression wave front inside tunnel by train entering tunnel. Computations were carried out using three-dimensional compressible Euler equation with vanishing viscosity and conductivity of fluid. According to the reslts, the flow disturbance occured at tunnel entrance were eliminated by tunnel hood with same cross sectional area. The compression wave front is formed completely at 30-40m from tunnel entrance. The maximum pressure gradient of compression wave front is reduced by 29.8% for the inclined tunnel hood and reduced by 21.5% for the tunnel hood with holes at the top face with tunnel without hood. The length of the inclined hood is 15m and the length of the hood with holes is 20m.
The mechanism of the hydrogen gas pore formation was investigated in Lost Foam Casting of Al-alloy by reduced pressure test and real casting. The hydrogen gas pick-up was affected by the formed gas during the decomposition of polystyrene in addition to the liquid product. It depended on pouring temperature and a proper temperature of metal front gave the minimum hydrogen pick-up. At a low pouring temperature, the hydrogen went into the melt mainly from entrapped liquid product of polystyrene but pores were formed from the gas as well as the liquid product at a high pouring temperature. The mold flask evacuation down to 710torr decreased the gas porosity down by around 0.4% vol%. The entrapped decomposition product of polystyrene in the melt was observed through the visualization of filling behavior of Al alloy-melt with the high speed camera.

Solutions of geotechnical engineering problems require predictions of deformation and stresses during various stages of loading. Powerful numerical methods are available to make such predictions even for complicated problems. To get accurate results, realistic stress-strain relationships of soils are dependent on a number of factors such as soil type, density, stress level and stress path. Attempts are continuously being made to develope analytical models for soils incorporating all such factors. Isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with several stress path for Baekma river sand were performed to investigate stress-strain and volume change characteristics of Lade's single work hardening model dependant on the stress path. In order to predicted of stress-strain and volumetric strain behavior were determined the values of parameters for the mode by the computer program based on the regression analysis. Predicted stress-strain behavior of triaxial compression tests and optional stress path tests for increasing confining pressure with parameters obtained conventional triaxial compression tests agreed with several test results but the prediction results for decreasing confining pressure reduced triaxial compression tests make a little difference with test results.

It seems that blowing air bubble out of the bulb surface of a ship of flat bottom will reduce the frictional resistance, since wetted area of the hull surface is reduced owing to air bubble staying close to the surface. To as certain this concept, at first, the limiting streamlines around the bow was observed, and local distribution of pressure and shear stress, due to the change of air-blowing position, air supply pressure, and the model speed, was investigated. It was found that the local friction was reduced near the bulb and air-bubble formations also play an important role as a drag component. This paper can be considered as a preliminary study on the drag reduction of conventional ships by the micro-bubble injection.

The problem of edge overcoating developed near the edge of the steel strip is studied quantitatively in the gas wiping process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing. It has been assumed that the edge overcoating occurs due to the reduced impact pressure of wiping gas on the strip edge and it is one of detrimental problems to the quality of coating products. In order to analyse the edge overcoating problem numerically, three-dimensional unsteady flows due to the gas wiping are calculated by using a commercial code, STAR-CD. Standard $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model is used as a turbulence model. The 1D code for calculation of coating thickness is constructed by using continuity and Navier-Stokes equations. The calculation results have shown good agreement with measurements of edge overcoating thickness, taken from galvanizing line trials. Therefore it is conformed that the major cause of edge overcoating is the reduced impact pressure of wiping gas on the strip surface.

Behaviors of surges appearing near the stall stagnation boundaries in various fashions in systems of a single-stage compressor and flow-path systems were studied analytically and were tried to put to order. Deep surges, which enclose the stall point in the pressure-mass flow plane, tend to have either near-resonant surge frequencies or subharmonic ones. The subharmonic surge is a multiple-loop one containing, for example, in a (1/2) subharmonic one, a deep surge loop and a mild surge loop, the latter of which does not enclose the stall point, staying only within the stalled zone. Both loops have nearly equal time periods, respectively, resulting in a (1/2) subharmonic surge frequency as a whole. The subharmonic surges are found to appear in a narrow zone neighboring the stall stagnation boundary. In other words, they tend to appear in the final stage of the stall stagnation process. It should be emphasized further that the stall stagnation initiates fundamentally at the situation where a volume-modified reduced resonant-surge frequency becomes coincident with that for the stagnation boundary conditions, where the reduced frequency is defined by the acoustical resonance frequency in the flow-path system, the delivery flow-path length and the compressor tip speed, modified by the sectional area ratio and the effect of the stalling pressure ratio. The real surge frequency turns from the resonant frequency to either near-resonant one or subharmonic one, and finally to stagnation condition, for the large-amplitude conditions, caused by the non-linear self-excitation mechanism of the surge.
In this study, a three-dimensional transient simulation with a knock model was performed to predict knock occurrence and autoignition site in a heavy-duty LPG engine. A FAE (Flame Area Evolutoin) premixed combustion model was applied to simulate flame propagation. The coefficient of the reduced kinetic model was adjusted to LPG fuel and used to simulate autoignition in the unburned gas region. Engine experiments using a single-cylinder research engine were performed to calibrate the reduced kinetic model and to verify the results of the modeling. A pressure transducer and a head-gasket type ion-probe circuit board were installed in order to detect knock occurrences, flame arrival angles, and autoignition sites. Knock occurrence and position were compared for different piston bowl shapes. The simulation concurred with engine experimental data regarding the cylinder pressure, flame arrival angle, knock occurrence, and autoignition site. Furthermore, it provided much information about in-cylinder phenomena and solutions that might help reducing the knocking tendency. The knock simulation model presented in this paper can be used for a development tool of engine design.
Infratentorial cerebral hemorrhage due to a direct carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is very rare. To our knowledge, only four such cases have been reported. Cerebellar hemorrhage due to a direct CCF has not been reported. We describe a 63-year-old female who presented with reduced consciousness 3 days after undergoing a maxillectomy for maxillary cancer. Computed tomography showed a cerebellar hemorrhage. Magnetic resonance angiography showed a left-sided direct CCF draining into the left petrosal and cerebellar veins through the left superior petrosal sinus (SPS). Her previous surgery had sacrificed the pterygoid plexus and facial vein. Increased blood flow and reduced drainage could have led to increased venous pressure in infratentorial veins, including the petrosal and cerebellar veins. The cavernous sinus has several drainage routes, but the SPS is one of the most important routes for infratentorial venous drainage. Stenosis or absence of the posterior segment of the SPS can also result in increased pressure in the cerebellar and pontine veins. We emphasize that a direct CCF with cortical venous reflux should be precisely evaluated to determine the hemodynamic status and venous drainage from the cavernous sinus.

Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of aroma inhalation therapy on pain post tonsillectomy. Method: A non-equivalent control group pre- and post-test design was used. The research instruments used in this study were a pain perception measurement and vital signs (systolic & diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate levels). Twenty-five patients in the experimental group went through aroma inhalation therapy for ten minutes after the tonsillectomy. The aroma inhalation therapy used was a blended oil, a mixture of Lavender and Loman chamomile in the ratio of 2:1. The 25 patients in the control group did not receive the therapy. Before and after the experiment, both groups were tested for pain (pain perception and vital signs). Collected data were processed with the SPSS WIN. Ver. 14.0 program and analyzed using frequencies, percentages, ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and ANCOVA. Results: Pain perception of patients was not significantly reduced. However systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate were significantly reduced. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that aroma inhalation is a partially effective nursing intervention to reduce the post-operative tonsillectomy pain.
