In this paper, behavior of rectangular storage structures under earthquake loadings are investigated. Linear sloshing is assumed in this study. The effect of the wall flexibility is considered. Eulerian and lagrangian approaches are presented. The Eulerian approach is carried out by solving the boundary value problem for the fluid motion. In the lagrangian approach, the fluid as well as the storage structure is modelled by the finite element method. The fluid region is discretized by using fluid elements. The (1 $\times$ 1)-reduced integration is carried out for constructing the stiffness matrices of the fluid elements. Seismic analysis of the coupled system is carried out by the response spectra method. The numerical results show that the fluid forces on the wall obtained by two approaches are in good agreements. By including the effect of the wall flexibility, the forces due to fluid motion can be increased very significantly.

This paper presents a simulation method using the transmission line modeling to reduce simulation runtime of hydraulic control systems. This method is based on separating the system components each other using the transmission line elements prior to simulation, which leads to divide the simulated system into several subsystems suitable for an even more efficient integration. It can also handle nonlinearities and discontinuities without flag signal when restarting integration. By applying variable integration timestep to parallel hydraulic circuits via parallel processing, it is shown that simulation run-time can be reduced significantly compared with that of Runge Kutta method.

The concept of temperature distribution in inhomogeneous semi-infinite solids is examined by making use of direct integration method. The analysis is done on the solution of the in-plane steady state heat conduction problem under certain boundary conditions. The method of direct integration has been employed, which is then reduced to Volterra integral equation of second kind, produces the explicit form analytical solution. Using resolvent- kernel algorithm, the governing equation is solved to get present solution. The temperature distribution obtained and calculated numerically and the relation with distribution of heat flux generated by internal heat source is shown graphically.

The stiffness of 6-node isotropic element is stiffer than that of 8-node isotropic element of same configuration. This phenomenon was called 'Relative Stiffness Stiffening Phenomenon'. In this paper, an equation of sampling point modification which correct this phenomenon was derived for the composite plate, as well as an equation for an isotropic plate. The relative stiffness stiffening phenomena of an isotropic plate element could be corrected by modifying Gauss sampling points in the numerical integration of stiffness matrix. This technique could also be successfully applied to the static analyses of composite plate modeled by the 3-dimensional 16-node elements. We predicted theoretical errors of stiffness versus the number of layers that result from the reduction of numerical integration order. These errors coincide very well with the actual errors of stiffness. Therefore, we can choose full integration of reduced integration based upon the permissible error criterion and the number of layers by using the thoretically predicted error.

It is essential to predict the welding deformation at assembly stage, to increase productivity through mechanization and automation effectively. A practical analysis method appled for production engineering was proposed to simulate the deformation of arc welding, with an analytical model using finite element method solving thermal-elastic-plastic behavior. In this research, for accurate assembling, 3-D thermal-elastic-plastic finite element model is used to simulate the out-of-plane deformation caused by arc welding. Efforts have been made to find out the efficient method to improve the reliability and accuracy of the numerical calculation. Each of theories of small and large deformation is applied in solving 3-D thermal-elastic-plastic problem to compare with their efficiency about calculation imes and solution accuracy. When solid elements are used in a bending problem of a plate, phenomenon that the predictive deformation is more than that of actual survey is observed. To prevent this phenomenon, reduced integration method for element is employed instead of full integration that is generally used in 3-D thermal-elastic-plastic analysis.

Steel structures with added viscoelastic dampers are analysed to investigat their behavior under earthquake excitation. The direct integration method, which produces exact solution for the non-proportional or non-classical damping system, is used throughout the analysis. The results from modal strain energy method are also provided for comparison. Then a new analytical a, pp.oach, based on the rigid floor diaphragm assumption and matrix condensation technique, is introduced, and the results are compared with those obtained from direct integration method and modal strain energy method. The well known phenomenon, that the effectiveness of the viscoelastic dampers depends greatly on the location of the dampers, is once again confirmed in the analysis. It is also found that the modal strain energy method generaly underestimates the responses obtained from the direct integration method, especially when the dampers are placed in only a part of the building. The proposed method turns out to be very efficient with considerable saving in computation this and reasonably accurate considering the reduced degrees of freedom.

Effective computational strategies have been proposed in the evaluation of stiffness matrices of rigid-plastic finite element method widely used in simulation of metal forming processes. The stiffness matrices are expressed as the sum of stiffness matrices evaluated by reduced integration and Liu's stabilization matrices which control the occurrence os zero-energy mode due to excessive reduced integration. The proposed method has been applied to the solution of fundamental 3-dimensional problems. The results clarified that the deformed mesh configuration was remarkably stabilized and computation speed attained about 3 times as fast as that of conventional 3-dimensional analyses. Furthermore, computation speed increases by a factor 60 when parallel computation is introduced. This speed has a tendency to increase as the total degree of freedom increases. As a result, this rigid-plastic finite element method enables us to analyze real 3-dimensional forming processes with practically acceptable computation time.

This paper deals with geometric nonlinear analyses using a new meshfree technique which improves the numerical integration accuracy. The new method called the Petrov-Galerkin natural element method (PGNEM) is based on the Voronoi diagram and the Delaunay triangulation which is based on the same concept used for conventional natural element method called the Bubnov-Galerkin natural element method (BGNEM). But, unlike BGNEM, the test shape function is differently chosen from the trial shape function. In the linear static analysis, it is ensured that the numerical integration error of the PGNEM is remarkably reduced. In this paper, the PGNEM is applied to large deformation problems, and the accuracy of the proposed numerical technique is verified through the several examples.
This work presents a direct integration scheme, based on a fourth order finite difference approach, for elastodynamics. The proposed scheme was chosen as an alternative for attenuating the errors due to the use of the central difference method, mainly when the time-step length approaches the critical time-step. In addition to eliminating the spurious numerical oscillations, the fourth order finite difference scheme keeps the advantages of the central difference method: reduced computer storage and no requirement of factorisation of the effective stiffness matrix in the step-by-step solution. A study concerning the stability of the fourth order finite difference scheme is presented. The Finite Element Method and the Boundary Element Method are employed to solve elastodynamic problems. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed scheme, two examples are presented and discussed at the end of this work.

The Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process is an enhanced method to extract oil from bitumen which involves surface and central process facilities. This paper describes the Central Process Facilities (CPF) of SAGD and proposes several retrofit plans to the Heat Exchanger Network (HEN). In this approach, the process integration scheme is applied to estimate the energy saving in HENs, and various cases are modeled in favor of a commercial simulator. Throughout this work, a minimum approach temperature of 10℃ is assumed. The results reveal that, due to the HEN optimization using process integration, the heating and cooling duties can be reduced to 29.68MW and 1.886MW, respectively. Compared with the Husky case, all cases considered in this study indicate a potential reduction of at least 6% in total cost, including investment and operation costs.
