  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of restraint (DOR) of longitudinal steel at continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) against environmental loadings. METHODS : To measure the longitudinal steel strain, 3-electrical resistance and self-temperature compensation gauges were installed to CRCP test section (thickness = 250mm, steel ratio = 0.7%) and continuously measured 10 min. intervals during 259 days. In order to properly analyze the steel strains first, temperature compensation process has been conducted. Secondly, measured steel strains were divided into 12 phases with different events such as before paving, during concrete hardening, and after first cracking, etc. RESULTS : Thermal strain rate (TSR) concept is defined as the linear strain variations with temperature changes and restraints rate of longitudinal steel against environmental loadings (especially thermal loading) with different cases is defined as degree of restraint(DOR). New concept of DOR could be indirect indicator of crack width behaviors of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : Before paving, DOR of longitudinal steel is almost same at the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel ($12.44m/m/^{\circ}C$) because of no restraint boundary condition. After concrete pouring, DOR is gradually changed into -1 due to concrete stiffness developing with hydration. After first cracking at crack induced area, values of DOR are around -3~-5. The negative DOR stands for the crack width behavior instead of steel strain behavior. During winter season, DOR reached to -5.77 as the highest, but spring this values gradually reduced as -1.7 as the lowest. Based on this observation, we can presume crack width decreased over time within the time frame of this study. This finding is not consistent with the current theory on crack width variations over time, so further study is necessary to identify the causes of crack width reducing. One of the reasons could be related to concrete stress re-distribution and stress relaxation.

  • In this study, we propose the method of optimally selecting material of front pillar (A-pillar) and package tray for minimizing weight while satisfying vehicle requirements on static stiffness and dynamic stiffness. First, we formulate a material selection optimization problem. Next, we establish the CAE procedure of evaluating static stiffness and dynamic stiffness. Then, to enhance the efficiency of design work, we integrate and automate the established CAE procedure using a commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) tool, PIAnO. For effective optimization, we adopt the approach of metamodel based approximate optimization. As a sampling method, an orthogonal array (OA) is used for selecting sampling points. The response values are evaluated at the sampling points and then these response values are used to generate a metamodel of each response using the radial basis function regression (RBFr). Using the RBFr models, optimization is carried out an evolutionary algorithm that can handle discrete design variables. Material optimization result reveals that the weight is reduced by 49.8% while satisfying all the design constraints.

  • This study was carried out to investigate quantitative characteristics of the cooling effect in a single-span arch greenhouse with roll-up side vents depending on operation of circulation and exhaust fans during ventilation, in order to suggest a practical strategy regarding installation or operation of forced ventilation systems. The examination was conducted under 3 different ventilation conditions (side vents only, side vents + circulation fans, and side vents + circulation fans + exhaust fans). In each condition, variations of internal and external air temperatures and exogenous environmental factors were recorded during ventilation, and the cooling effects were investigated by comparing the normalized temperature difference (NTD) of each ventilation condition. In the morning time (11:00-12:00), a temporary peak in the temperature difference was observed at the beginning of ventilation regardless of ventilation methods. The time taken to the maximum NTD was decreased from 340 s to 110s, and the NTD was dropped from 1.158 to 1.037 as the more forced ventilation systems were operated. The more operations caused the passing time over specific NTD values reduced by 60% as the time was reduced from 1,030 s to 550 s at NTD = 0.8, 1,610 s to 915 s at NTD = 0.6, and 2,315 s to 1,360 s at NTD = 0.4. The temporary peak in NTD was not observed in the afternoon time (14:00-15:00) but it was dropped as quickly as the ventilation started. Also the more operations resulted in the passing time over specific NTD values reduced by 70% as the time was reduced from 560 s to 345 s at NTD = 0.8, from 825 s to 540 s at NTD = 0.6, and from 1,145 s to 810 s at NTD = 0.4. Conclusively, the intervention of the forced ventilation system is recommended in the morning time or in high thermal conditions to achieve more effective and economical ventilation.

  • In this paper, we propose a Peak to Average power Ratio(PAR) reduction algorithm by using the Adaptive Block Coding(ABC). The problem of a PAR due to each sub-carrier overlap phenomenon in the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system causes the an increasing in the complexity of the A/D converter in the transmitter and a reduction in the efficiency of the amplifier. The proposed ABC algorithm selects the block coding which provides the lowest PAR value based on the various check bit position. It is shown that a PAR of the ABC algorithm can be reduced from 8.35dB to 6.02dB in 16 sub-carriers compared to theconventional block coding scheme. We also extended the ABC algorithm to a larger number of sub-carriers and estimated their PAR values.

  • There have been little reports on the degradation of medium-carbon steel tubes served at high temperature for a long period. The purpose of this research was to provide the information of the proper replacement span of the tubes with the new ones. We investigated the medium-carbon steel tubes which were used at petrochemical plant for about 50,000 hrs to examine their mechanical properties and microstructures. Experimental results showed that the tubes satisfied the specification of ASTM despite such a long period of service, but mechanical properties, especially charpy impact values, were reduced. It concludes that the tubes on service at the plants needs a periodical inspection.

  • The physical factor having a great influence among components of making values of profit model in apartment houses is equilibrium change of house and this study suggests an alternative of remodelling. It sets profit models including model dividing household of large scale into that of small scale using value making factor of apartment house and spatial composition techniques and model integrating households of small scale and converting them into those of large scale and finds that its economy is good as over 'average', evaluative value of economy is reduced as discount rate increases and economy of remodelling is superior.

  • Korea is a small country with relatively large mountainous areas and has many difficulties from planning to completing one road. Maintaining a completed road presents even more difficulties. presently, in estimating design elements, the result varies according to the engineer and there are many cases that question the reliability of the results. Therefore, in this study, the alignment of highway was sampled using by the centerline path, the design elements of horizontal alignment were reduced by applying the Least Squares Method, and the accuracy was analyzed. By this method, IP, IA, R, $\Delta$R and A-parameter were also determined. By observing relatively long straight sections, the approximate values could be estimated, and particularly, the considerably accurate value of A-parameter was determined. This study, using the Least Squares Method, aims to contribute to the development of the alignment examination in frequent traffic accident regions.

  • This paper presents a prediction structure with a Hybrid Dynamic Branch Prediction (HDBP) scheme which decreases the number of stalls. In the application, a branch history register is dynamically adjusted to produce more unique index values of pattern history table (PHT). The number of stalls is also reduced by using the modified gshare predictor with a long history register folding scheme. The aliasing rate decreased to 44.1% and the miss prediction rate decreased to 19.06% on average compared with the gshare branch predictor, one of the most popular two-level branch predictors. Moreover, Compared with the gshare, an average improvement of 1.28% instructions per cycle (IPC) was achieved. Thus, with regard to the accuracy of branch prediction, the HDBP is remarkably useful in boosting the overall performance of the superscalar processor.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of superheated steam (SHS) on volatile compounds and the quality characteristics of onion. Onion samples were treated by SHS at various steam temperatures ($100{\sim}300^{\circ}C$) for 1 min. Thiosulfinates and pyruvic acid were reduced by SHS treatment. The absorbance values obtained for thiosulfinates, the odor-causing compounds in onions, treated by were 0.889, 0.085, 0.049, 0.049, and 0.045, while that of the untreated control sample was 1.587. The pyruvic acid contents of onions treated by SHS were 7.57, 5.85, 1.66, 0.47, and 0.26 mg/mL, while that of the untreated control sample was 8.00 mg/mL. Volatile compounds such as, dipropyl trisufide, 1,3-propanedithiol, methyl thiirane, methyl propyl trisulfide, diallyl disulfide, 1-(methylthio)-1-propene, 1,1-thiobis-1-propene, 1,1-sulfinyl bispropane, dimethyl tetrasulfide, methyl propenyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, and diallyl disulfide were reduced by SHS treatment. The results showed that antioxidant activities in the of onion samples were improved by SHS treatment. The hardness and chewiness of onions treated by SHS were significantly lower than those of the untreated control onion sample. Sensory evaluation suggested that SHS could help lower off-flavors in and enhance the palatability of onions. These results suggest that the application of SHS treatment to onions can decrease their off-flavors, change their textural attributes, and promote their sensory properties.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the magnitude of artifacts produced by gutta-percha and metal posts on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans obtained with different tube currents and with or without metal artifact reduction (MAR). Materials and Methods: A tooth was inserted in a dry human mandible socket, and CBCT scans were acquired after root canal instrumentation, root canal filling, and metal post placement with various tube currents with and without MAR activation. The artifact magnitude was assessed by the standard deviation (SD) of gray values and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) at the various distances from the tooth. Data were compared using multi-way analysis of variance. Results: At all distances, a current of 4 mA was associated with a higher SD and a lower CNR than 8 mA or 10 mA (P<0.05). For the metal posts without MAR, the artifact magnitude as assessed by SD was greatest at 1.5 cm or less (P<0.05). When MAR was applied, SD values for distances 1.5 cm or closer to the tooth were reduced (P<0.05). MAR usage did not influence the magnitude of artifacts in the control and gutta-percha groups(P>0.05). Conclusion: Increasing the tube current from 4 mA to 8 mA may reduce the magnitude of artifacts from metal posts. The magnitude of artifacts arising from metal posts was significantly higher at distances of 1.5 cm or less than at greater distances. MAR usage improved image quality near the metal post, but had no significant influence farther than 1.5 cm from the tooth.
