  • This study introduces the basic concepts of the vibration reducing methods and presents a case study of 'A' apartment construction site which located nearby railroad. The site is only 60m away from the railroad. Therefor much noise and vibration damages could be expected during train or any other transportation's passing. Especially, the first and second floor may suffer much vibration with the low frequency radiation noise from the walls and floors. This study estimates the noise level of indoor area by measuring the vibration of indoor walls and floors. From this result, vibration barrier, as a method to reduce the noise level which exceeds proper standard value, was attempted to protect vibration transmit from the railroad.

  • An improvement of driving motor burning damages on a couplingless type warship fire pump is studied. The pump consists of an induction motor a pump-motor shaft and a volute type impeller. The burning damage had occured by changing the material of the pump-motor shaft from carbon steel(SM 45C) to stainless steel(STS 316) for improving anti-corrision properity in sea water. It is shown that a material change on the pump-motor shaft can reduce the efficiency of driving motor and may cause motor burning in the process of pump development stage. This kind of motor burning problem can be solved by increasing the efficiency of the motor and changing the geometry of the inner parts.

  • In this paper, warm asphalt binder was proposed as a substitute for the polymer-modified asphalt binder to get higher viscosity than that of the polymer-modified at the same temperature. Performance grade test and rotational viscosity of warm asphalt binder were conducted to evaluate the property variations due to the addition of admixture. Research results showed that the viscosity of warm asphalt binder at $100^{\circ}C$ was similar to that of the conventional asphalt binder. The performance and durability of warm asphalt binder were also comparable to those of the polymer-modified. It is considered that the active applications of warm asphalt binder can reduce environmental damages due to less diffusions of carbon dioxide compared to the conventional.

  • Algeria is a country with a high seismic activity. During the last decade, many destructive earthquakes occurred, particularly in the northern part, causing enormous losses in human lives, buildings and equipments. In order to reduce this risk in the capital and avoid serious damages to the strategic existing buildings, the government decided to invest into seismic upgrade, strengthening and retrofitting of these buildings. In doing so, seismic vulnerability study of this category of buildings has been considered. Structural analysis is performed on the basis of site investigation (inspection of the building, collecting data, materials, general conditions of the building, etc), and existing drawings (architectural plans, structural design, etc). The aim of these seismic vulnerability studies is to develop guidelines and a methodology for rehabilitation of existing buildings. This paper will provide insight to the vulnerability assessment and strengthening of the telecommunication centre, according to the new code RPA 99/version 2003. Both, static equivalent method and non linear dynamic analysis are performed in this study.

  • This paper describes the lightning protection system for railway signaling equipments installed at subway car depots in Seoul metropolitan Rapid Transit Cooperation. Several measures for improving lightning protection performance are adopted; newly organized grounding system for neutral line of power system, rolling method to minimize damages induced by direct lightning strike, new measures to reduce voltage differences between the signaling equipments and the ground, and improvement of grounding system. The proposed system has greatly reduced the grounding resistance and also the voltage difference between the signaling equipments and the ground, and has prevented the accident related with lightning surges since it was installed. The proposed approach can be viewed as a useful alternative of dealing with lightning protection for railway signaling equipments.

  • An intensive study was conducted for crashworthiness structural design of recently developed Korean High Speed Train. Two nam design concepts are setup to protect the both crews and passengers from serious injury at heavy collision accidents, and to reduce damages of the train itself at light collision accidents. For occupant protection a collision against a movable 15 tons rigid obstacle at 110 kph and a train-to-train collision at 30 kph were selected as accident scenarios for the heavy collisions based on the train accident investigations. A train-to-train collision at 8 kph was used for the light collisions. The crashworthiness behaviors of KHST have been evaluated numerically using the finite element method. Also, one-dimensional collision analyses show good crashworthy responses in a full rake consist and 3-dimensional shell element analyses do in the front-end structures of the power car. Occupant analyses and sled tests demonstrated that KHST performs well enough to protect occupants under the considered accident scenarios.

  • Borosilicate glass was incorporated to improve the neutron shielding capability of concrete. Boron is a typical neutron shielding material, and it is contained in borosilicate glass. However, borosilicate glass causes alkali-silica reaction, which damages the concrete. Therefore, studied to reduce the expansion due to alkali-silica reaction and to improve the neuton shielding capability. The measurement of the expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction was based on ASTM C 1260. Experimental results show that the expansion due to alkali-silica reaction is reduced when borosilicate glass powder incorporated. In addition, the neutron shielding capability was significantly improved when the fine aggregate replaced with borosilicate glass.

  • When the electrical appliances such as TVs and refrigerators become obsolete, they must be collected to the recycling centers to avoid environmental damages. The obsolete home appliances are first moved to the regional collection point; and then transported to one of the recycling centers. Each recycling center has a limited capacity; and some recycling centers can process only certain types of products. For given locations of the existing collection points and recycling centers, optimally assigning the obsolete home appliances of each type from each collection point to the recycling centers can significantly reduce the total transportation cost. We formulate this problem as an LP problem. We also present an approach to determine the locations of additional recycling centers in order to alleviate the over-utilization of the current recycling centers.

  • Among all transportations, railway transports have been promisingly offering excellent energy conservation and travelling time. Inevitably, they become a main role in not only transport goods but also passengers. With leap in development of technology, trains have tremendously enhanced their services in terms of speed, accessibility and comfort. However, the safety and ride quality have become a main issue as the train speed increased. The higher speeds have led the structural dynamics and health must be monitored from time to time to ensure that they are in good condition to provide reliable ride. Among all monitoring systems, the structural health monitoring (SHM) systems are imperative important due to its capability of in-situ monitoring and inherently reduce the maintenance frequencies and the huge associated cost. In this paper, SHM systems and the related non-destructive test and evaluation methods were discussed. The types of damages related to train vehicles as well as the damage hot spots are also included in this paper.

  • High frequency excitation terms in a cam profile can excite vibration of a cam follower system. In this paper, modified smoothing spline curves are used to reduce the high frequency terms. The essential difference between the proposed method and other existing approaches is its ability to make the principal cam motions smooth while still exactly satisfying boundary conditions of follower displacement, velocity and acceleration. The boundary values usually depend on the ramp properties of a cam. Our method, thus, allows designers to smooth the existing cam motion without any damages on its ramp areas. Because the ramp height, velocity and acceleration are maintained exactly, more radical smoothing is possible. An example shows that the proposed method can be a powerful tool of cam profile smoothing, which removes high frequency components in the cam profile excitations without any changes in ramp properties.
