In South Korea, problems such as low fertility, aging population, and income polarization have recently become more serious. In this time of social change, it is necessary to examine the current changes occurring to residences in order to improve the stability and health of residential areas. The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of residential areas that occurred between 2000 and 2010 based on detached houses, which are the foundation of residential areas in Seoul. Changes in residential areas can be observed by examining changes in the type of housing and the characteristics of the residents. Since the type of housing and the characteristics of the residents change in the same area, it is necessary to study them together, not as individual elements. Census data is suitable for this purpose, because it can show the changes that have occurred to the housing type and the residents' characteristics within the neighborhood unit. Among the census output areas identified as residential areas based on detached houses, six sites were selected as the case study area based on the rate of change of detached houses. From the result of the case study using the census data, the study area was categorized into three regional types: (i) an urban development and redevelopment area; (ii) an area with a concentration or increasing number of detached houses; (iii) an area with an increasing number of multi-family houses based on detached houses.
Necessity of paradigm change has been awared in urban redevelopment especially, in housing regeneration from uniform scratch without serious consideration about resident's lives to holistic approach based on local culture and residents' participation. The purpose of this research was to identify community places recognized and attached by residents of a housing improvement district which was scheduled to be changed for improvement of the area, in near future. This research itself was considered as an resident participation technique. Group interview at a field site was carried as the main research methodology. As results, valuable places cherished by residents were identified. Most of them could be explained in relation to religious leadership, traditional cultural heritage and democratic movement. In regeneration process those places which have a strong tie with residents needs to be deliberately considered as a target to be preserved rather than demolished. The places also play a role in diffusing a livable village making movement. The result is expected to be used to make a cognitive and emotional community map of residents which is meaningfully differentiated from just a physical and geographical map. The places, place recognition activities and diffusion movement for common appreciation can be a basic foundation for residents participation in improving their housing neighborhood environment, and in creating value added strategies for the area.
This study explored types and characteristics of South Korean crossover picturebooks that are enjoyed across generations. Participants included three publishers, six critics, six illustrators and three picturebook researchers, and focused on 92 South Korean recommended picturebooks published from 1995 to 2014 as the research material for this study. The majority of Korean crossover picturebook type was story, followed by information and art. There were few wordless books. Common themes of the story picturebooks were contemplation, traditional culture, social changes (such as immigration and redevelopment), reminiscence, social relations, loss and death, family problems, and social incidents. Classic essays and novels were revised for picturebooks as were famous poems originally written for grown-ups. Informational books were about traditions in music, architecture, furniture and special occasions like wedding and ceremonies. The style of the drawings were precise and realistic. Some drawings were done by brush and Chinese ink on hanji (traditional Korean paper) or silk. Some books featured Korean calligraphy as well, enabling adult readers to also appreciate the beauty and delicacy of the books. Art books and wordless books were quite rare and exhibited a playful tone. Adults alone were not presumed to be the primary reading audience of the picture books. Implications were made for picturebook marketing in a society such as South Korea, where the elderly population is rapidly increasing. Various forms of art books and parodies were also welcome. One conclusion of the study was that more experimental and innovative works would be encouraging for the development of South Korean crossover picturebooks.
With signs of the redevelopment of the domestic sewing industry, national support agencies were established. This study aims to assess the present conditions of the domestic sewing industry and investigate the effectiveness of national sewing industry support policies. According to the results of a survey of 30 sewing companies managers, the biggest factor causing product defects was work being rushed because of tight delivery dates, and the reduction in sales was caused by a lack of orders. Moreover, sewing technicians are aging, and the biggest reason for their decrease in number is that people do not pursue the job because of the common understanding that it is difficult. Managers perceived that the government's sewing technician training program was not a practical help. They were well aware of the support program to improve the work environment and the sewing equipment support program and showed high satisfaction with these programs, but they complained that the period for equipment rental was fixed. A majority of them thought that the Korean sewing industry environment had still not improved, and were skeptical about its future outlook. They identified its most urgent needs as the expansion of orders and the securing of manpower. The support programs that they wanted urgently included support for employees' four major public insurances and the enactment of the increase of toll processing fees.
Based upon the cases of two conventional market places of Seoul (Chungryangri and Hwanghakdong Market0, this study seeks, in mainly the insiders's view, to find out the micro meaning of conventional market places in the city. In-depth interviews for longer than six months were used to get life histories and daily life records from the merchants. From the result of the in-depth interviews, it was found that, for the insider's view, conventional markets are places where lower class people (or people who leave their farm lands for a city) easily settle down, as shoed in the two families' settlement history in the two conventional markets are very much similar to those in their home places. In conclusion, as represented in these two markets, conventional market places are not only the places that provides jobs to their merchants but also the places where the merchants' lives are continued, developed and reproduced. Based upon the both outsider's and insider's views, it is suggested that the recent modernization and redevelopment process to deal with conventional markets should change its direction and search for other solutions.

Transformations of the urban spatial structure, from sub-area redevelopment to newtown development, results great influences upon existing urban condition and spatial configuration. The purpose of the study is to analyse the effect of the urban spatial configuration of Uijongbu city where experienced changes after newly development of city center and new residential area. The west part of the city where is limited in growth by military bases, ego U.S Army basecamp, were planned and established as the other axis of the city center since mid 1980's. After that new residential area which is located in far east of the city were also developed. Space syntax as a methodology has been adopted to conduct quantitative analysis which is able to interpret differences between sub-areas ; old city center, new city center, new residential area. The results of the analysis are follows ; 1) existing structure of the urban fabric, especially old city center, is sustained and intensified, 2) new city center which is west part of the city has failed to achieve organic spatial connection adjacent to old city center, 3) there is less spatial depecdency relationship between city center and new residential area where is identified as another small self-support city within the city.
Under the guise of a residential environment improvement, distendedly designated Pre-Housing Renewal districts and Renewal Districts by Basic Plan for Renewal Projects are not promoted and leaved for a long-term so that residential problems have become worse. In case of the canceled Housing Renewal district, at the time when the district are canceled, the residential environment has become already superannuated for more than 10 years but there is no follow-up plan to manage that problem so that the exact management plan for those neglected districts is urgently needed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the aspect of change of residential environment after the cancellation and indicate appearing problems by conducting on the case of Canceled districts of Daegu Housing Renewal District. This study will be the first step to seek practical management measures for canceled districts, and on the basis of this, the research will become a precedent to seek the sustainable planning measures for the designation and management of Renewal Projects from now on.
The existing most studies on the apartment sales prices have been limited to relatively small size apartment complexes and have not categorized the apartment complexes based on the number of households. Some of them uses the apartment-related indices such as regional value estimates, sales unit price, and view right values. In the case of Seoul Metropolitan Area, the size of apartment complex has been growing to the level of large complex over more than 1,000 households through new town development, redevelopment and reconstruction. People prefers to choose a large scale complex instead of small complex based on their perception that a large scale apartment complex provides more conveniences in living. The result of this analysis revealed that the variables chosen as important determinants of the hedonic price model for large scale apartment complexes were square meters of apartment unit, rent/price ratio, number of bays, distance to the nearest subway station, and heating system method. This means that the sales price of apartment unit will be higher as the square meters of apartment unit increase, as the rent/price ratio decreases, as the distance to the nearest subway station increases, and as the number of bays increase.
