  • Red tide occurred sporadically in early 90s. But It is happening extensively by global warming. So, Airline observation, Red tide buoy development, and Red tide alarm system research is progressing for monitor ring. However, study to early forecast red tide and red tide alarm system did not exist hard. This paper proposed development that design and implementation red tide database of using wireless sensor network. There are GPS, Water Temperature sensor, Oxygen sensor, and Turbidity sensor in each node. And data is stored to red tide database through Ad-hoc network. This data is integrated and analyzed. So, forecast red tide. And red tide database has red tide data that happen at past. This is utilized to comparative analysis data for red tide estimate. Main screen displays position of node and measured value in electron map. Much studies must be backed for this a study. But I think that contribute to analyze red tide data by red tide database construction.

  • The red tide related with Cochlodinium Polykrikoides bloom has been frequently occurred around the South Sea of Korea and caused the economic loss in the coastal breeding grounds. The outbreak scale was usually change by physical, biological and environmental condition at each years. Relatively large-scale red tide occurred in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003 through spatial scale, duration and maximum density. Compared the scale of red tide with physical condition around the South Sea, the lower coastal temperature on August around the South Sea corresponded with the large scale red tide. By serial oceanographic investigations on August in the South Sea and estimated wide area temperature information by satellite, SSTA around the South Sea and wide area was negative when the outbreak of red tide was large scale. From the results of temperature difference between surface and 30m layers, the occurrence of enormous red tide has a tendency when the temperature gradient around the seasonal thermocline was weakened. Larger Kuroshio volume transport in the upstream was also corresponded with the large scale red tide.

  • There have been many studies on red tide due to increasing damage from red tide on fishing and aquaculture industry. However, internal study of automatic red tide image classification is not enough. Recognition of red tide algae is difficult because they do not have matching center features for recognizing algae image object. Previously studies used a few type of red tide algae for image classification. In this paper, we proposed the red tide image recognition method using semantic features of NMF and roundness of image objects.

  • The outbreaks of red tide were sporadic in the South Sea until 1994, but have become frequent and widespread in whole coastal waters of the South Sea and East Sea since 1995 For monitoring of red tide, many kinds of techniques such as remote sensing, GIS and fuzzy model system have been developed and applied. The purpose of this paper is to develop red tide monitoring system for collection of red tide data and biological-oceanography parameters using wireless sensor network. The wireless sensor network has been noticed as a core technology in order to realize ubiquitous computing. In this paper, we design red tide database using wireless sensor network and suggest red tide monitoring software and web-service for user and biological-oceanographer.

  • The monitoring activities at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) in Korea have been extended to include all the coastal waters of Korea after the outbreak of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms in 1995. We used several alternative methods including climatological analysis, spectral and optical methods which may offer potential detection of the major species of red tide in Korean waters. In the climatological analysis, NOAA, SeaWiFS, OCM satellite data was chosen using the known C. polykrikoides red tide bloom data and the area was mapped by helicopter reconnaissance and ground observation. The relationship between the distribution of sea surface temperature to C. polykrikoides bloom areas was studied. The anomalies of SeaWiFS chlorophyll a imageries against the imageries of non-occurring red tide for August, 2001 showed where the C. polykrikoides occurred. The anomalies of chlorophyll a concentrations from the satellite data during red tide outbreaks showed a similar distribution of C. polykrikoides in the red tide in August, 2001. The distribution between differences in sea surface temperatures during the day and at night also showed a possibility for red tide detection. We used a corrected vegetation index (CVI) to detect floating vegetation and submerged vegetation containing algal blooms. The results of from the optical absorption of C. polykrikoides in the ultraviolet band (340 nm) showed that if we use the optical characteristics from each red tide, we will be able to establish the feasibility of red tide detection.

  • This study is analyzed the optical property of red tide pixel by using Landsat-7 ETM+, Landsat-8 OLI and COMS/GOCI image. In order to sample red tide pixel, Landsat-7, 8 true color image were used and obtained coordinate of red tide pixel in the true color image. Normalized water leaving radiance(nLw) and absorption coefficient were obtained from GOCI image in the same coordinate of the true color image. When red tide was not occurred the main absorption range was 412nm and 660nm but when red tide occurred it was 660nm and absorption coefficient in 412nm are drastically reduced. It made no difference of nLw spectrum between red tide pixel and non red tide pixel in nLw, but the absolute value of nLw was low than non red tide pixel, especially 660nm and 680nm wavelength sharply decrease.

  • The research on red tide is generally in progress through field work, such as the naked eye and sampling. It was difficult to forecast exactly the course, from appearance of red tide to disappearance. with the established ways of investigation and analysis. Accordingly it is need to analyze environmental factors in time and space, the appearance of red tide and the path of its migration by more objective and scientific methods. In this study, GIS is applied to analyse the space character of red tide and the interpolation of IDW(Inverse Distance Weight) is applied to assume the density distribution of red tide after gather data by using Arc/Info. After IDW interpolation, the sea area occurred over 1,000 cells/ml of red tide density is extracted with CON and SUM Function of Grid Module, and the density of the sea area is accumulated daily. As a result of this study, the distribution condition of red tide is found timely and spacially by applying GIS to the sea area of red tide, the results indicated that the spatial density and the cumulative frequency about the origin of red tide using GIS, the sea area demonstrated that the maximum density and the maximum frequency varied significantly over the Nammyun of Namhae-Is. with the maximum frequency being 49 times. accordingly if data about the areas of red tide will occur from the present are accumulated, the shifting route of red tide occurrence and extinction can be predicted.

  • In this paper, we evaluate a red tide detection possibility of GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) which will be launched in 2008. To detect red tide, we use a similar wavelength range of MODIS normalized water-leaving radiance data instead of GOCI data. Supposed to GOCI, red tide detection algorithm is based on MRI(MODIS Red tide Index) and use 667nm band to filter turbid water. The algorithm's effectiveness is verified by detecting large Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide event that was appeared in Korean coastal waters. The evaluation was done by comparing the result with the update data provided by the NFRDI.

  • Red tide is a temporary natural phenomenon involving harmful algal blooms (HABs) in company with a changing sea color from normal to red or reddish brown, and which has a bad influence on coast environments and sea ecosystems. The HABs have inflicted massive mortality on fin fish and shellfish, damaging the economies of fisheries for almost every year from 1990 in South Korea. There have been many studies on red tide due to increasing damage from red tide on fishing and aquaculture industry. However, internal study of automatic red tide image classification is not enough. Especially, extraction of matching center features for recognizing algae image object is difficult because over 200 species of algae in the world have a different size and features. Previously studies used a few type of red tide algae for image classification. In this paper, we proposed the red tide image recognition method using NMF and revison of rotation angle for enhancing of recognition of red tide algae image.

  • It is studied on the relationship between the occurrence of red tide and the meteorological factors(precipitation, air temperature, sunshine and winds) in the middle coastal area in the South Sea of Korea. In summer and early-fall which frequently occurred the red tide, the precipitation had directly influence on the occurrence of red tide because it carried the nutritive substances which originated from the land into the coastal areas. Then air temperature kept up generally high values, and sunshine and winds showed not directly the relationship on the occurrence of red tide.
