  • The waste glasses among plenty of wastes put out lately is limited in recycling and reusing, and the phenomenon hasn't been improved quite much. And besides, the recycling rate shows the 70.1%, relatively low. These waste glasses is currently used for road pavement materials, interior and exterior decorating materials in architecture, road painting meterials, auxiliary lagging materials for heat-retaining, coldness-retaining and soundproofing, and glass bottles. 30% of waste glasses powder is, however, not reused pratically. Therefore, in this research, we operated some tests including flow of mortar mixed with waste glasses powder, setting time, rheology and compressive strength to utilize waste glasses powder put out in the precess of recycling for admixture for repair mortar. As a result, we've found out that we can utilize waste glasses powder for admixture for repair mortar.

  • This study was performed to investigate the recycling activity of solid waste. Three study area were selected, which were Dobonggu in Seoul, Siheung City and Kimpogun. The amount of recycled out of the solid waste generated was between 0.02 kg per capita/day -0.10 kg per capita/day. The recovery rate of the waste paper was 42.7%, which was the highest, followed by glass bottles, cans and plastics. The waste paper was the most important item concerning its weight percentage and amount of sales. It comprised more than 60% in its weight and sales amount out of the total recycled item. Glass bottles placed the second. Amount of sale for the recycled item was less than 5 Won per capita/day, this is very low. The Recycling Drive Association, a private organization was mainly organized by public administrational basis and its activity was simply concentrated on the reclassification of the collected recyclables. Generally, citizen's participation and the member's satisifaction was low since there was no economic incentives. In this paper, some strategies were suggested and evaluated to increase citizen's recycling activity.

  • In the automotive industry, such as scrap metal and plastic scrap process is being recycled. Although the glass beads are used as road paving or other additives and processing crushing, recycling is known that there are limits. The utilization of waste glass was evaluated as a concrete admixture by using powder characteristics and chemical composition of the glass. As a result of using waste-glass powder as an admixture, it is difficult to expect the pozzolanic effect, but it is found that it can increase the fluidity of concrete and ensure the durability performance in the appropriate amount range.

  • The expanded waste glass material is one of the recycling materials. We investigated whether the expanded waste glass material is useful as planting basis and effective as heat insulation. We examined the difference of the materials by using vegetation index and temperature. The combination of the improved soils and the improved glasses marked higher vegetation index than other mixture materials. Moreover, this combination material is excellent than other ones to heat insulation. Therefore, it suggests that the expanded waste glass material has high potential to be used as a material for planting basis.

  • Fly ash has different chemical composition depending on the type and quality of flaming coal. Fly ash is classified according to carbon content and particle size. Waste glass powder is manufactured by crushing glass. Exterior Insulation Finish System (EIFS) is generally applied by using poly-styrene foam which is economical and has excellent thermal insulation performance. However, poly-styrene foam has excellent insulation performance, but it is vulnerable to fire, which is becoming a serious problem. In this study, using a fly ash and waste glass powder to produce a finishing mortar at high temperatures. Also, High temperature strength and flame retardant properties were tested according to the cover thickness. From the test result, finishing mortar prepared using fly ash and waste glass powder is due to the improved heat resistance by alkali-activated bonding. However, since the strength decreases at high temperatures, it is necessary to select an appropriate mixing proportion.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve recycling rate of the waste glasses by investigating bloating mechanism. In this study, we use waste glass(W/G) and hard clay(H/C) as raw materials. The artificial lightweight aggregates were formed by plastic forming($\phi$=10 mm) and sintered by fast firing method at different temperatures(between 700 and $1250^{\circ}C$). The physical properties of the aggregates such as bulk specific gravity, adsorption and microstructure of surface and cross-section are investigated with the sintering temperature and rate of W/G-H/C contents. As the result of the bulk specific gravity graphs, we can found out the inflection point at content of W/G 60 wt%. From the microstructure images, we considered the artificial lightweight aggregates content of W/ G over 60wt% are distributed numerous micro-pores by organic oxidation without Black Core and the artificial lightweight aggregates of W/G below 60 wt% are distributed macro-pores with Black Core.

  • The municipal solid waste (MSW) management system in one of the Class II Indian cities i.e. Rishikesh was studied and analysed to identify the key issues in solid waste management in the city. A total of 329 solid waste samples from 47 households were collected to characterize the household solid waste (HSW). The average (HSW) generation rate was 0.26 kg/c/d and it was composed of organic waste (57.3%), plastics (14%), paper (10.9%), and glass and ceramic (1.3%) and other materials (16.5%). There was an inverse relationship between household waste generation rate and family size (p < 0.05). The MSW management system practiced in Rishikesh is unsound. There is no waste segregation at source, no provisions of composting and no recycling by formal sector. The collection and transportation of waste is inadequate and inappropriate. Collected waste is dumped in open dumping site without scientific management. Following are some recommendations for developing a sustainable solid waste management system in Rishikesh city: (1) sensitize people for segregation at source; (2) promote reduction, reuse and recycling of wastes; (3) promote community based composting; (4) provision for 100% door to door collection and; (5) formalize the informal sectors such as rag pickers and recycling industries.

  • The quantities of heavy weight waste glass have been progressively increased because of the rapid industrialization and the change of quality of life. And, the most of them are not recycled. The heavy weight waste glass have been treated by illegal dumping or being buried in landfills. Meanwhile, in order to ensure the safety of nuclear power plant structure, the excellent construction materials are socially required for shielding performance. Concrete is the most widely used construction material, the huge amounts of natural resources are required to make concrete. So, it is needed to investigate the possibility of recycling of heavy weight waste glass as concrete material ingredient. In this study, the heavy weight waste glass was evaluated for the applicability as fine aggregate of shielding concrete. From the results, when heavy weight waste glass was replaced as fine aggregate of mortar, shielding performance can be improved due to increasing in unit weight of mortar. It showed that the strength decreased according to mixing of heavy weight waste glass, Non-Washed heavy weight waste glass is more advantageous in the strength development than Washed case.
