Induction motors are used widely in driving load of a fluid, such as a pump or a fan in the industry. Induction motor has been generated the voltage drop by the occurrence of a high current during startup. In addition, high start-up current can act as a mechanical stress on the shaft of the motor. So there is need a way to reduce the starting current. Soft start method is one of the many ways to reduce the starting current. This method uses silicon-controlled rectifiers(SCRs) for varying value of the voltage applied to the motor. There is a case for fixing or changing the thyristor firing angle to adjust the magnitude of the voltage. Starting power factor of induction motor is very low compared to the normal operation. Soft starting with the firing angle fixed needs to be considered a low power factor at startup. In this study, we compared the direct start characteristics and soft start characteristics considering the low power factor at the time of start-up. It was possible to confirm that the starting current and the voltage drop is present differently according to the firing angle.
A design methodology for transformers including integrated and center-tapped structures for LLC resonant converters is proposed. In the LLC resonant converter, the resonant inductor in the primary side can be merged in the transformer as a leakage inductance. And, the absence of the secondary filter inductor creates low voltage stress on the secondary rectifiers and is cost-effective. A center-tapped structure of the transformer secondary side is widely used in commercial applications because of its higher efficiency and lower cost than full-bridge structures in the rectifying stages. However, this transformer structure has problems of resonance imbalance and transformer inefficiency caused by leakage inductance imbalance in the secondary side and the position of the air-gap in the transformer, respectively. In this paper, gain curves and soft-switching conditions are derived by first harmonic approximation (FHA) and operating circuit simulation. In addition, the effects of the transformer including integrated and center-tapped structures are analyzed by new FHA models and simulations to obtain an optimal design. Finally, the effects of the air-gap position are analyzed by an electromagnetic field simulator. The proposed analysis and design are verified by experimental results with a 385W LLC resonant converter.
Ac-dc power conversion can either be done with two separate converter stages or with a single converter stage. Two-stage ac-dc converters, however, can be costly and complex, while the performance of single-stage converters is compromised due to a reduced number of components. Several researchers have therefore proposed adding some sort of auxiliary circuit consisting of a second switch and some passive elements to single-stage converters to improve their performance. Although these modified single-stage converters may have two converters, they are not two-stage converters as they do not have two separate and independently controlled converters that are always operating to convert power from one form to another. In this paper, the operation of ac-dc single-stage converters is first reviewed and their strengths and weaknesses are noted. The operation of several modified single-stage converters, including one proposed by the authors, is then discussed, and the paper concludes by presenting experimental results that confirm the feasibility of the proposed converter.
A novel hybrid carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) scheme that combines unipolar and dipolar modulations is proposed for single-phase three-level rectifiers, which are widely applied in railway traction drive systems. The proposed CBPWM method can satisfy the volt-second balancing principle in the complete modulation index region through overmodulation compensation. The modulation scheme features two modulation modes: unipolar and dipolar. The operation range limits of these modulation modes can be modified by changing the separation coefficient. In comparison with the traditional unipolar CBPWM, the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme can provide advantageous features, such as lower high-order harmonic distortion of the line current and better utilization of switching frequency. The separation coefficient value is optimized to achieve the maximum utilization of these advantages. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme.
In order to further improve the harmonic suppression capability of conventional 12-pulse rectifiers, this paper proposes a low harmonic 12-pulse rectifier using an Active Inter-Phase Reactor (AIPR). Through a detailed analysis of the relationship between the input current, output current and circulating current of the DC side, the mechanism where the AC grid side current harmonics can be suppressed by the DC side circulating current is revealed. On this basis, an interleaved APFC controlled by a DSP is designed and used as an AIPR along with an interphase reactor. A simulation is carried out with MATLAB/Simulink and an experiment is performed on a 9-kVA prototype. The obtained results verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed approach. Compared with a traditional 12-pulse rectifier, the THD can be reduced to 1/5 of the original value, and the capacity of the AIPR is only 2% of the load power. Thus, it is suitable for high-power applications.
A high-efficiency method is proposed to suppress magnetic core imbalance in phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converters. Compared with conventional solutions, such as controlling peak current mode (PCM) or adding DC blocking capacitance, the proposed method has several advantages, such as lower power loss and smaller size, because the additional current sensor or blocking capacitor is removed. A time domain model of the secondary side is built to analyze the relationship between transformer core imbalance and cathode voltage of secondary side rectifiers. An approximate control algorithm is designed to achieve asymmetric phase control, which reduces the effects of imbalance. A 60 V/15 A prototype is built to verify the proposed method. Experimental results show that the numerical difference of primary side peak currents between two adjacent cycles is suppressed from 2 A to approximately 0 A. Meanwhile, compared with the PCM solution, the efficiency of the PSFB converter is slightly improved from 93% to 93.2%.
This paper introduces an enhanced interleaved (IL) PFC (Power Factor Correction) boost converter typed 650V Intelligent Power Module (IPM), which is fully optimized hybrid IGBT converter modules; Silicon (Si) IGBT and Silicon Carbide (SiC) diode, for up to 10kW HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. It utilizes newly developed $4^{th}$ Generation Field Stop (FS) trench IGBTs, $EXTREMEFAST^{TM}$ anti-paralleled diodes, SiC Junction Barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes, Bridge rectifiers, Multi-function LVIC, and Built-in thermistor provide good reliable characteristics for the entire system. This module also takes technical advantage of DBC (Direct Bonded Copper) substrate for the better thermal performance. It is shown that the Si IGBT/SiC diode hybrid IL PFC module can achieve excellent EMI performance and greatly enhance the power handling capability or switching frequency of various applications compared to the Si IGBT/Diode. This paper provides an overall description of the newly developed 650V/50A Hybrid SiC IL PFC IPM product.

Due to the increasing amount of applications of power electronic ac-dc converters, it is necessary to design a single-stage converter that can reliably perform both buck and boost operations. Traditionally, this can be achieved by double-stage conversion (ac/dc-dc/dc) which ultimately leads to less efficiency and a more complex control system. This paper discusses two types of modern ac-dc converters. First, the novel impedance-source ac-dc converter, abbreviated as custom Z-source rectifier, is analyzed; and then, switched inductor (SL) Z-source ac-dc converter is proposed. This paper describes the Z-source rectifiers' operating principles, the concepts behind them, and their superiorities. Analysis and simulation results show that the proposed custom Z-source rectifier can step up and step down voltage; and the main advantage of the SL Z-source ac-dc converter is its high step-up capability. Low ripple of the output dc voltage is the other advantage of the proposed converters. Finally, the SL Z-source ac-dc converter is compared with the custom Z-source ac-dc converter.
This paper presents a new zero voltage switching (ZVS) converter for medium power and high input voltage applications. Three three-level pulse-width modulation (PWM) circuits with the same power switches are adopted to clamp the voltage stress of MOSFETs at $V_{in}/2$ and to achieve load current sharing. Thus, the current stresses and power ratings of transformers and power semiconductors at the secondary side are reduced. The resonant inductance and resonant capacitance are resonant at the transition interval such that active switches are turned on at ZVS within a wide range of input voltage and load condition. The series-connected transformers are adopted in each three-level circuit. Each transformer can work as an inductor to smooth the output current or a transformer to achieve the electric isolation and power transfer. Thus, no output inductor is needed at the secondary side. Three center-tapped rectifiers connected in parallel are used at the secondary side to achieve load current sharing. Compared with the conventional parallel three-level converters, the proposed converter has less switch counts. Finally, experiments based on a 1.44kW prototype are provided to verify the operation principle of proposed converter.

To analysis the effect by the Harmonics through Power facilities in Apartment housing, This paper measured the Harmonics at Lighting Transformer, Power Transformer and Services-entrance Conductors of electrical installation in apartment housing. The measured result is following as : 1) The Harmonics at Lighting Transformer is generated in the large of the 5th Harmonics. 2) The Harmonics at Power Transformer is generated in the large of the 5th and 7th Harmonics. And then 3) The THD at the Services-entrance Conductors is average 2.4[%], which is compared to the measuring Voltage, this meaning value is good condition until now against Harmonics effect. But, So the large capacitance of household electrical alliances with rectifiers in the future considered the effect of Harmonics at the Electric Power planning in apartment Housing.
