Purpose of this study is to investigate structural behavior of the rectangular hollow column with various transverse reinforcement details. Experimental variables are diameter, arrangement details and lateral spacing of cross tie. A total of 66 column specimens have been prepared and tested under axial compressive load. Test results showed that behaviors of column specimens were different depending on the cross tie details. Specimens with cross tie wrapping longitudinal steel and transverse steel have greater strength and ductility than specimens with cross tie wrapping the longitudinal steel.
The objectives of this study were to provide experimental data on the behavior of interlocking spiral columns under cyclic loading, to compare the performance of columns with interlocking spirals to columns with U-type hoops with hook, to study the flexural detailing of interlocking spirals and other transverse steel configurations as the transverse reinforcement The oblong columns with interlocking spirals and with hooked U-type hoops and cross-ties better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. The oblong columns with hooked U-type hoops and cross-ties showed better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. And this research were to make recommendations for the design of bridge columns incorporating interlocking spirals and U-type hoops with hook as the transverse reinforcement.

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures with low-strength RC columns are rampant in several countries, especially those constructed during the early 1960s and 1970s. The weakness of these structures due to overloading or some natural disasters such as earthquakes and building age effects are some of the main reasons to collapse, particularly with the scarcity of data on the impact of aspect ratio and corner radius on the confinement effectiveness. Hence, it is crucial to investigate if these columns (with different aspect ratios) can be made safe by strengthening them with carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets. Therefore, experimental and numerical studies of CFRP-strengthened low-strength reinforced concrete short rectangular, square, and circular columns were studied. In this investigation, a total of 6 columns divided into three sets were evaluated. The first set had two circular cross-sectional columns, the second set had two square cross-section columns, and the third set has two rectangular cross-section columns. Furthermore, FEM validation has been conducted for some of the experimental results obtained from the literature. The experimental results revealed that the confinement equations for RC columns as per both CSA and ACI codes could give incorrect results for low-strength concrete. The control specimen (unstrengthened ones) displayed that both ACI and CSA equations overestimate the ultimate strength of low-strength RC columns by order of extent. For strengthened columns with CFRP, the code equations of CSA and ACI code overestimate the maximum strength by around 6 to 13% and 23 to 29%, respectively, depending on the cross-section of the column (i.e., square, rectangular, or circular). Results of finite element models (FEMs) showed that increasing the layer number of new commonly CFRP type (B) from one to 3 for circular columns can increase the column's ultimate loads by around eight times compared to unjacketed columns. However, in the case of strengthened square and rectangular columns with CFRP, the increase of the ultimate loads of columns can reach up to six times and two times, respectively.
The kinematically admissible velocity field is developed for the analysis of extruded products. The curving of product in extrusion is caused by the linearly distributed longitudinal velocity on the cross-section of the workpiece at the die exit. In the analysis, the longitudinal velocity in extrusion direction is divided into the uniform velocity and the deviated velocity. In order to satisfy the requrement of the kinematically admissible velocity field, the average value of the deviated velocity should be zero. At the same time, it should linearly change with the distance form the center of gravity of the cross-section of the workpiece. The results of the analysis show that the curvature of product increses with increses in eccentricity of gravity center of the cross-section of workpiece at die entrance form that of the cross-section at the die exit. The effects of punch and blank shapes in the rectangular cup drawing process are examined experimentally to improve the formabilities. For this purpose, three blank shapes which are h-bl., G-bl., and T-bl., and five punch shape factors which are the ratios of two adjacent side lengths in rectangular cross section are adopted. The constructing methods of the three blank shapes are as follows. The h-bl. is designed by slip-line theory, and the G-bl. is selected for the similar shape to the punch. The T-bl. is obtained by the drawing method which is introduced in the technical references. The five punch shape factors are selected for length/width=1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2. The experimental procedures are performed for all the above forming conditions to investigate and compare the formabilities. As a result, it is verified experimentally that the rectangular cups drawn by the h-bl. are more ideal than those drawn by G-bl. and T-bl.. They have not only higher limiting drawing ratio, more uniformity in drawn cup heights and more ideal thickness distributions, but also need relatively less maximum drawing forces.
This paper describes the collapse characteristics of the rectangular tube under eccentric compressive load. Local buckling stress and maximum crippling load are investigated. A thin-walled tube under load is controlled by local buckling or yielding of material according to the ratio of thickness to width (t/b) of the cross section, and subsequent collapse of the section. The relationship can be divided into three regions : elastic , post-buckling and crippling . the load-displacement relationship is theoretically presented in each region by introducing the stress distribution of the cross section in the loading process. And the maximum load carrying capacity is derived in the closed form as a function of normal stress on the flange and web.
Hot-wire measurements were carried out on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating curved duct. The cross-section of the curved duct varies from 100mm${\times}$50mm rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the 50mm${\times}$100mm rectangular shape at the bend outlet. Experimental setup consists of the test section of $90^{\circ}$ curved duct, rotating disc of 1.95m diameter, Ag-Ni precision slip ring, automatic traversing mechanism, variable speed motor, centrifugal blower, orifice flowmeter and hot-wire anemometer. Data signals from the rotating curved duct are transmitted through the slip ring to the computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynold stresses components were obtained from the fluctuating and mean voltage measured by the slant type hot-wire probe rotating into 6 orientations. We investigate the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the turbulence structure.

This paper describes physical meanings of various influences of cavity (or pillar) shape and filling factor of dielectric material on band structures in two-dimensional photonic crystals. Influences of circular and rectangular cross-sections of cavity (or pillar) arrays on photonic band structures are considered theoretically, and significant aspects of square and triangular lattices are compared. It is shown that both averaged dielectric constant of the photonic crystal and distribution profile of photon energy play important roles in designing optical properties. For the triangular lattice, especially, it is shown that cavity array with a rectangular cross-section breaks the band structure symmetry. So, we discuss this point from the band structure and address optical properties of lattice with a circular cross-section cavity.
In this paper, trapezoid sections and prominence sections were examined to improve the performance of floating breakwater in long waves. The linear potential theory is used and the boundary element method with a matching boundary is employed for numerical computation. The effects of the side slope of the trapezoid section and the geometry ratio of the prominence section on the floating breakwater were examined. It was found that trapezoid sections show lower transmission coefficients than the rectangular sections in the long wave range. In prominence sections the size of the sides are more important than the size of the top. Proper choices of the pontoon type geometry may move the local minimum point of the wave transmission coefficient toward the longer wave ranges and improve the performance of the floating breakwater in the long wave range for a given wave period.
