  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of the family caregivers using a nursing home for their elderly family members. Method: Participants for this study were 1 man and 9 women caregivers. Data was collected through in-depth interviews from October, 2005 to April, 2006 and analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: "Finding a way to live together" emerged as a core category and it reflected expanding consciousness allowing them to see each other in a more positive view. The basic social process of "finding a way to live together" includes 3 phases: 1) recognizing the problems, 2) finding solutions to the problems, and 3) accepting the changes in their surrounding. Lack of privacy, family troubles, extreme distress, and unavailable caregivers are reflected in the process of recognizing the problems. The process of finding solutions was making a decision, obtaining family agreement, choosing the best nursing home, and enduring the financial burden. Possible outcomes of the last phase include recovering peace of mind and continuing conflict. Conclusion: Findings from this study offer suggestions for developing a strategy to help not only the elderly but also the family caregivers.

  • An electric swing adsorption (ESA) process for recovering highly pure $CO_2$ from the mixed gases was tested. In this study, activated carbon fibers were used as an adsorbent. The activated carbon fibers showed fast adsorption rate and the high adsorption capacity for $CO_2$ adsorption under the condition of the ambient pressure. Activated carbon fiber with higher specific surface area was suitable to repeated adsorption-desorption cycle process, showing consistent breakthrough curve. Especially, the regeneration method by vacuum combined with ESA improved the performance of desorption process by an additional 17% regeneration efficiency compared to a vacuum only method, and showed the high regeneration efficiency at comparatively low 7-8 Wh energy.

  • This study is interested in how philological interpretation of a space text were patterned so as to give the text structural cohesion. A similar philological motivation incorporates some of the notions of generative grammar. Interpretation is the process of recovering the cultural meanings expressed in discourse by analysing the linguistic structures in the light of their interactional and wider social contexts. Viewed in this light, the process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this research contains basic concepts of signification of text and context, and theories of spacial text and context of typological structure in terms of Ricoeur's structural Hermeneutics. Secondly, it concretize a logic that traditional space context is inserted in organized attribute like emotion, spirit, nature as character of contemporary space text through typological structure. Finally, from aspect of designation theory among interpretive semantics, it shows that korean contemporary space design is incorporated with typological structure of korean traditional palace spacial context homologically through the case study of I-Hotel space design. Through this process, this study suggest that positivistic interpretation methodology by designation of text is logical thinking of Korean traditional space design.

  • The issue of how to manage the existing records at an archives is very important from the aspects of principle and practicality in record management since it is deeply related with the system of managing new records. Although there are a few studies on filing and criteria on organizing records, they do not often help in the actual site of record and archives management. Therefore, we need to raise the issues that could develop in actual sites and find the ways or resolving these issues, other than the general criteria proposed. Refiling is a very important task for recovering the original order and needs to be a task that should be done according to the overall system and process of record management at an archives. Furthermore, it is very important to objectify and regulate the contents and methods of the task of refiling through the refiling criteria with the content of criteria being specific. From the arguments presented until now, we could tell that refiling falls in the area of record management at an archive directly related with the department of reproducing records at public organizations. Moreover, the role of archivists relates with the task of refiling is critical. Especially, distinguishing job according to chief object is a critical issue in the status and role of archivists at record and archives institutions. This process is important not only at the level of simple job makeup but also in record management. Archivists should be responsible for preparing refiling criteria, reviewing of problems developed in job process, classifying records for refiling, reviewing and refiling of catalogs and key words, selecting equipment and tools, and establishing various forms.

  • A lot of researches have been carried out on the recovery of resources from the seawater all over the world. The boron concentration in seawater is low about at 4.5ppm, but considering the volume of seawater, the total weight of dissolved boron amounts to about 5.4 trillion tons. The boron is an essential resource in about 300 kinds of industries. Korea has imported all of the boron and spent more than 700 billion won each year. In this article, we introduce the domestic and international research trends and technologies for removing or recovering the boron from wastewater and seawater. Most of the researches have been conducted to remove the boron from the desalination process, and to recover the boron mainly from wastewater and brine. The technique for the recovery of the dissolved boron includes the ion exchange, which is the most representative, the adsorption membrane filtration (AMF), solvent extraction, and so on.

  • Stroke is known as a detrimental disease that leaves serious sequelae. The stroke patients suffer from limitations of physical and social activities. The patients try to adapt themselves to the limitations in order to achieve rehabilitation. This study was performed to clarify the lived experience of rehabilitation from the stroke patients. In collecting data for this study, in-depth personal interviews were made by a researcher from February to April in 2001 at rehabilitation clinics and physical therapy centers locate in Iksan city. The methodological approach was van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological methodology in order to understand the meaning and nature of stroke patients' experiences in rehabilitating their physical limitations. Collected data were analyzed with phenomenological way of study that was develope by van Manen. The 8 patients who agreed to participate in this research were inter viewed by researcher under the private and comfortable environment. Personal interviews were done three or five times per each patients and each interview took 70 to 90 minutes. The statements were analyzed and finally revealed three essential themes : Theme 1 - Desperateness to achieve freedom again Theme 2 - Seizing hope of recovering Theme 3 - Seeking support from family members, relatives and friends Based on these themes, stroke patients' rehabilitation experience are described as following. The stroke patients have strong desire to achieve freedom again in order to escape from social isolation. The stroke patients want to go back to the state of their previous health state. The stroke patients strongly try to do anything for their recovering and also to have positive thinking. In the other hand, they feel pity for themselves through desperation, fear, sorrow, and self-pity. The stroke patients have dissatisfaction about neighbors' rumor and attitude toward themselves. The stroke patients have experiences to rely on neighbors' support seeking a warm word of consolation. This research showed us that van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological methodology leads us to understand stroke patients' rehabilitation process more comprehensibly. Based on this research, it is suggested that further studies provide a foundation for the development of a rehabilitation theory for Korean stroke patients.

  • This study aims to introduce and economical review on the possibilities of rare earth elements(REEs) recovery from coal ashes and the analysis of economical evaluation factors based on the data for securing domestic rare earth elements. The cut-off grade of REEs on recovering from coal ash was confirmed to be 1,000 ppm on total rare earth oxides(TREO) basis, and while the economic value of coal ash changed with contents and specific elements of rare earth elements. This shall be resulted in the price differences of rare earth elements required by the current industry, and it probably varies depending on the future demand of rare earth components. For developing of commercial recovery technology on REEs in coal ashes, many researches have been carried out by various analyzing methods, such as evaluation of holding value of REEs in ashes, assessment between supply and demand of industry, comparison of investment and its profitability for the REEs's production from coal ashes, and so on. Although these methods have been suggested, its recovery system with economical feasibility could not been confirmed up to present. In this reason, the process design of recovering REEs from coal ash shall be researched continuously to solve the problems of the global rare earth market. And also these researches shall be conducted actively in Korea for the purpose of securing the REEs resources and their recovering technologies.

  • To prevent penetration of rainwater into the landfill site is the main purpose of the final cover in landfill sites. Conventional designs of landfill covers uses geotextiles such as geomembrane and GCL, and clay liners to lower the permeability of final covers of landfill sites. However, differential settlement and the variation of temperature in landfill sites cause the development of cracks or structural damage inside the final cover and it is also difficult to obtain clay - the main material of the compacted clay liner in Korea. Thus the former final cover system that suggests geomembrane and GCL or compacted clay liner has several limitations. Therefore, an alternative method is necessary and one of them is the application of SRSL(self-Recovering Sustainable Liner) material. SRSL is two different layers consist of individual materials that react with each other and form precipitates, and with this process lowers the permeability of the landfill final cover. SRSL generally is made up of two layers, so that when a internal crack occurs the reactants of the two layers migrate towards the crack and heal it by forming another liner. In this study the applicability of SRSL material for landfill final cover was examined by performing; (1) jar test to verify the formation of precipitate in the mixture of each reactants, (2) falling head test considering the field stress in order to confirm the decrease of permeability or prove that the hydraulic condctivity is lower than the regulations, (3) compression tests to judge weather if the strength satisfies the restricts for landfills, (4) freeze/thaw test to check the applicability of SRSL for domestic climate. In addition, the application of waste materials in the environmental and economical aspect was inspected, and finally the possibility of secondary contamination due to the waste materials was examined by performing elution tests.

  • Conventional designs of landfill covers use geosynthetics such as geomembrane and GCL, and clay liners to lower the permeability of final covers of landfill sites. However, differential settlement and the variation of temperature or humidity in landfill sites cause the development of cracks or structural damage inside the final cover. This study examined the application of a Self Recovering Sustainable Liner (SRSL) as an alternative landfill final cover material. SRSL consists of double layers, which have chemicals, can generate precipitates filling the pores of the layers by chemical reaction. The interface material forms an impermeable layer and in case of internal cracks, the reactants of the two layers migrate towards the crack and heal it by forming another liner. In this study the applicability of SRSL material for landfill final cover was examined by performing flexible wall permeameter tests to prove that the hydraulic conductivity is lower than the regulations and unconfined compression tests to judge whether the strength satisfies the restriction for the landfill final cover. Furthermore, the environmental impacts on the permeability and strength were evaluated. The experimental results show that the SRSL has lower hydraulic conductivity and higher strength than the regulations and is little influenced by climatic changes such as wet/dry or freeze/thaw process.
