  • In comparison with conventional shape memory actuated structures, antagonistic shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators permits a fully reversible two-way response and higher response frequency. However, excessive internal stress could adversely reduce the stroke of the actuators under repeated use. The two-way shape memory effect might further decrease the range of the recovered strain under actuation of an antagonistic SMA actuator unless additional components (e.g., spring and stopper) are added to regain the overall actuation capability. In this paper, the performance of all four possible types of SMA actuation schemes is investigated in detail with emphasis on five key properties: recovered strain, cyclic degradation, response frequency, self-sensing control accuracy, and controllable maximum output. The testing parameters are chosen based on the maximization of recovered strain. Three types of these actuators are antagonistic SMA actuators, which drive with two active SMA wires in two directions. The antagonistic SMA actuator with an additional pair of springs exhibits wider displacement range, more stable performance under reuse, and faster response, although accurate control cannot be maintained under force interference. With two additional stoppers to prevent the over stretch of the spring, the results showed that the proposed structure could achieve significant improvement on all five properties. It can be concluded that, the last type actuator scheme with additional spring and stopper provide much better applicability than the other three in most conditions. The results of the performance analysis of all four SMA actuators could provide a solid basis for the practical design of SMA actuators.

  • This study was carried out as basic researches to develop the leaf vegetable harvester. This study was conducted to investigate physical and rheological properties of bundled leaf vegetables with stem (Chinese leek, Crown daisy and Chamnamul) as test materials held and picked-up by a machine. Stress-strain behavior, stress relaxation, and strain recovery for the bundled materials were analyzed using simple Maxwell model. Physical and rheological properties of the materials were investigated by measuring rupture load, deformation and stress experimentally. Also, strain recovery time when unloading was measured using super high speed camera. Recorded recovery time for stress-strain behavior was0.026 s for Chinese leek with liner strain recovery, 0.046 s for Crown daisy and 0.05 s for Chamnamul with non-linear strain recovery. Furthermore, the strain recovery time for permanent deformation was 0.026 s, 0.046 s, and 0.05 s for Chinese Leek, Crown daisy and Chamnamul, respectively. Finally, strain recovery time and strain recovery ratio for the test materials were 0.17 s, 60.4% in Chinese leek, 0.12 s, 55.3% in Crown daisy, 0.15 s, 58.7% in Chamnamul. Here strain recovery time means that how fast the test materials are recovered from initial deformation and strain recovery ratio means how much the test materials are recovered from initial deformation. The above results show that the test materials can be held enough and moved by the belts.

  • For a video data terminal (VDT) operator, visual strain was caused by continuous VDT operations was found id be recovered by watching the picture of virtual far point with the background of the complementary color when the treatment to recover from visual strain was carried out. When the VDT operator watches the picture of virtual far point with the condition of the complementary color stimuli on the CRT display in 60 or 120 minutes after the start of the VDT operation, the visual strain is recovered and the VDT operator is kept healthy.

  • The tensile strain dependency of critical current in YBCO coated conductors was examined at 77K and in the self magnetic field. A commercially available YBCO sample with Cu stabilizer layer was supplied. There existed a peak in the relation between the Ie and tensile strain, and the reversible variation of $I_c$ with applied tensile strain was found. In the neutral axis Ni alloy RABiTS-$Y_2O_3$/YSZ/$CeO_2$ buffered YBCO tape, the $I_c$ recovered reversibly until the applied strain reached to about 0.5%, representing that a significant residual compressive strain induced during cooling to 77 K influenced the axial strain tolerance of YBCO conductors. To investigate the strain and stress influence on the $I_c$, the stress-strain characteristics of YBCO conductors measured at 77 K were discussed.

  • In this study, we wanted to determine if the respirotropic JMK strain of infectious bronchitis virus(IBV), which has a spike glycoprotein gene that is 99% similar to the nephropathogenic Gray strain of IBV, could adapt and cause lesions in the kidney following intracloacal passage in chickens. Two day old specific pathogen free(SPF) cchickens were infected with Gray and JMK strains by the intraocular and cloacal route. Several tissue samples were collected at various times. Viruses were recovered from more tissues and earlier in the infection from chickens infected cloacally than chickens infected intraocularly. Virus was isolated from the kidney of chickens infected with Gray by the intraocular route and JMK by the intracloacal route, but not from chicken given JMK the intraocular route. Histopathologically, interstitial nephritis was observed in Gray infected chickens. However, viral RNA or antigen were not detected in the kidney by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. We further passaged the JMK strain ten times in two day old SPF chickens using cloacal inoculation. We examined the virus titer and histopathological change in the kidney at each passage level. The amount of virus recovered from the kidney was stable throughout this serial passage and the passaged virus did not caused renal damage. Further, virus could not be isolated from the kidney when chickens were infected with the passaged virus by the intraocular route. We conclude that the JMK strain has a strict upper respiratory tract tropism since cloacal passage did not produce nephrotropism or nephropathogenicity.

  • Parameter identification is studied in viscoelastic rods by solving an inverse problem numerically. The material properties of the rod, which appear in the constitutive relations, are recovered by optimizing an objective function constructed from reference strain data. The resulting inverse algorithm consists of an optimization algorithm coupled with a corresponding direct algorithm that computes the strain fields given a set of material properties. Numerical results are presented for two model inverse problems; (i)the effect of noise in the reference strain fields (ii) the effect of minimal reference data in space and/or time data.

  • Human aorta has viscoelastic behavior. The test of tissues such as aorta, skin, muscle, and ok. is required to consider visco effect on deformation behavior. Creep and slow recovery are main aspects of viscoelasticity of tissue engineering. Volumatric strain plays a important role in determine slow recovery of human arota. This study is to suggest the method avoiding viscous effect in tissue experiment The results shows the time scale when the specimen can be fully recovered from slow deformation. Also, this study observes the qualitative creep-effect on elastic strain in 1 minute at the same loading.

  • Shape memory recoverable stress and strain of Ti-42.5at%Ni-10at%Cu alloys were measured by means of constant temperature tensile tests. The alloys' transformation behavior is B2 - B19 by DSC result. The strain by tensile stress were perfectly recovered by heating at any testing conditions but shape memory recoverable stress increased to 66MPa and then slightly decreased. Transformation temperatures from thermal cycling under constant uniaxial applied tensile loads linearly increased by increasing tensile load and their thermal hysteresis are about 110K and their maximum recoverable strain is 6.5% at 100MPa condition.

  • Five different enrichment methods were studied to find an optimal method to recover Yersinia enterocolitica from swine feed samples. When the recovery of Y. enterocolitica GER-C (serotype O:3) strain was studied at 1000 CFU/g feed, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) enrichment at $4^{\circ}C$ and PBS plus sorbitol and bile salts (PSB) enrichment at $4^{\circ}C$ and $21^{\circ}C$ were not effective (< 22%). In contrast, both irgasan-ticarcillin-potassium chlorate (ITC) and tryptic soy broth plus polymyxin B sulfate and novobiocin (TSBPN) enrichment methods showed a full recovery (100%) at 100-1000 CFU/g feed. At 10 CFU/g feed, both ITC and TSBPN methods still recovered the strain (> 50%). In recovery of ATCC 9610 (serotype O:8) strain, TSBPN method was more sensitive than any other methods (P < 0.05) at 1000 CFU/g feed. Using TSBPN method, the strain was still recovered at 100 CFU/g feed, but not at 10 CFU/g feed. With its sensitivity and relatively simple recipe, TSBPN was most desirable method to recover Y. enterocolitica from swine feed samples.

  • In this paper, the properties of strain sensors made of spin-capable multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were characterized and their sensing mechanisms analyzed. The key contribution of this paper is a new fabrication technique that introduces a simpler transfer method compared to spin-coating or dispersion CNT. Resistance of the MWCNT sheet strain sensor increased linearly with higher strain. To investigate the effect of CNT concentration on sensitivity, two strain sensors with different layer numbers of MWCNT sheets (one and three layers) were fabricated. According to the results, the sensor with a three-layer sheet showed higher sensitivity than that with one layer. In addition, experiments were conducted to examine the effects of environmental factors, temperature, and gas on sensor sensitivity. An increase in temperature resulted in a reduction in sensor sensitivity. It was also observed that ambient gas influenced the properties of the MWCNT sheet due to charge transfer. Experimental results showed that there was a linear change in resistance in response to strain, and the resistance of the sensor fully recovered to its unstressed state and exhibited stable electromechanical properties.
