  • Phytoliths, silica microfossil that produced within and between cells and tissues of plants are especially yielded in Gramineae with many different forms and can attribute to the reconstruction of climatic and environmental changes and agriculture activity of the Quaternary. The phytoliths in soil can remain for long periods of time, because of strong resistance to physical and chemical weathering. The spatial range of study is too small due to deposition of phytoliths directly to the soil. There are difficulties of phytoliths identification because of multiplicity and redundancy, so far uniform and exact classification scheme has not been adopted. Therefore we attempted phytolith classification system applied to Korea. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction research using phytholith are applicated in many parts of studies. Also high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction expected to be possible using phytolith indices of Iph and Ic as well as climatic indicator of phytolith morphology.

  • Super resolution technique aims to convert a low-resolution image with coarse details to a corresponding high-resolution image with refined details. In the past decades, the performance is greatly improved due to progress of deep learning models. However, universal solution for various objects is a still challenging issue. We observe that learning super resolution with a general dataset has poor performance on faces. In this paper, we propose a super resolution fusion scheme that works well for both general- and face datasets to achieve more universal solution. In addition, object-specific feature extractor is employed for better reconstruction performance. In our experiments, we compare our fusion image and super-resolved images from one- of the state-of-the-art deep learning models trained with DIV2K and FFHQ datasets. Quantitative and qualitative evaluates show that our fusion scheme successfully works well for both datasets. We expect our fusion scheme to be effective on other objects with poor performance and this will lead to universal solutions.

  • In this paper, an effective method of stereo image reconstruction through the regularized adaptive disparity estimation is proposed. Althougth the conventional adaptive disparity estimation method can sharply improve the PSNR of a reconstructed stereo image, but some problems of overlapping between the matching windows and disallocation of the matching windows can be occurred, because the matching window size changes adaptively in accordance with the magnitude of feature values. Accordingly, in thia paper, a new regularized adaptive disparity estimation technique is proposed. That is, by regularizing the estimated disparity vector with the neughboring disparity vectors, problems of the conventional adaptive disparity estimated scheme might be solved, and also the predicted stereo image can be more effectively reconstructed. From some experiments using the CCETT'S stereo image pairs of 'Man' and 'Claude', it is analyzed that the proposed disparity estimation scheme can improve PSNRs of the reconstructed images to 10.89dB, 6.13dB for 'Man' and 1.41dB, 0.81dB for 'Claude' by comparing with those of the conventional pixel-based and adaptive estimation method, respectively.

  • The anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) is an important stabilizer of knee joint. The ACL injury of knee is common and a serious ACL injury leads to ligament reconstruction surgery. Gait analysis is essential to identify knee condition of patients who display abnormal gait. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and classify knee condition of ACL deficient patients using a nonlinear dynamic method. The nonlinear method focuses on understanding how variations in the gait pattern change over time. The experiments were carried out for 17 subjects(l2 healthy subjects and five subjects with unilateral deficiency) walking on a motorized treadmill for 100 seconds. Three dimensional kinematics of the lower extremity were collected by using four cameras and KWON 3D motion analysis system. The largest Lyapunov exponent calculated from knee joint flexion-extension time series was used to quantify knee stability. The results revealed the difference between healthy subjects and patients. The deficient knee was significantly unstable compared with the contralateral knee. This study suggests an evaluation scheme of the severity of injury and the level of recovery. The proposed Lyapunov exponent can be used in rehabilitation and diagnosis of recoverable patients.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved surface reconstruction method from an oriented point cloud. Our method is a classical least-square scheme, but is based on the 7-direction box-spline and the BCC (Body-Centered Cubic) lattice, which results in surfaces with superior quality and lower computational overhead, compared to other methods based on the B-splines on the Cartesian lattice. Specifically, when compared with two of the most popular techniques our method results in better surfaces but only takes ${\approx}53%$ computation time.

Abstract This paper presents an efficient cell-based wavelet compression method of large volume data. Volume data is divided into individual cell of {{}} voxels, and then wavelet transform is applied to each cell. The transformed cell is run-length encoded according to the reconstruction order resulting in a fairly good compression ratio and fast reconstruction. A cache structure is used to speed up the process of reconstruction and a threshold normalization scheme is presented to produce a higher quality rendered image. We have combined our compression method with shear-warp factorization, which is an accelerated volume rendering algorithm. Experimental results show the space requirement to be about 27:1 and the rendering time to be about 3 seconds for {{}} data sets while preserving the quality of an image as like as using original data.

  • In electrical impedance tomography(EIT), various image reconstruction algorithms have been used in order to compute the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object with its electric potential data at the boundary. Mathematically the EIT image reconstruction algorithm is a nonlinear ill-posed inverse problem. This paper presents a new combined method based on genetic algorithm(GA) and modified Newton-Raphson(mNR) algorithm via two-step approach for the solution of the static EIT inverse problem. In the first step, each mesh is classified into three mesh groups: target, background, and temporary groups. The mNR algorithm can be used to determine the region of group. In the second step, the values of these resistivities are determined using genetic algorithm. Computer simulations with the 32 channels synthetic data show that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images by the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the mNR algorithm at the expense of increased computational burden.

  • To diagnose cardiac malfunctions, various imaging techniques have been applied to heart : DSA(Digital Subtracted Angiography), Doppler Ultrasound, MR Angio. But it is difficult to observe three dimensional heart motion which is the most intuitive tool for diagnosis, only by using these methods. In this research, we have suggested 4-Dimensional reconstruction scheme of heart motion images that can be acquired by ECG-gated cine MR imaging. One cardiac cycle was devided into $9\sim15$ phases and for each phase 3D reconstructed volumn heart was made. We can observe 3D volumns along the cardiac cycle, time. So the results were 4-D reconstructed data.

  • Recently, with the wide spread of the Internet and development of wireless network technology, it has now become possible to access web pages anytime, anywhere through devices with small display such as PDA But, since most existing web pages are optimized for desktop computers, browsing web pages on the small screen through wireless network requires more scrolling and longer loading time. In this paper, we propose a page reconstruction scheme called PageMap to make it feasible to navigate existing web pages through small screen devices even on the wireless connection. Reconstructed pages reduce the file and page size and thus eventually reduce resource requirements. We have Implemented a prototype system and performed several experiments for typical web sites. We report some of the results.
