When data is transmitted over an unreliable channel, the error of the data packet may result in serious degradation. The multiple description coding (MDC) can solve this problem and save transmission costs. In this paper, we propose a deep multiple description coding network (MDCN) to realize efficient image compression. Firstly, our network framework is based on convolutional auto-encoder (CAE), which include multiple description encoder network (MDEN) and multiple description decoder network (MDDN). Secondly, in order to obtain high-quality reconstructed images at low bit rates, the encoding network and decoding network are integrated into an end-to-end compression framework. Thirdly, the multiple description decoder network includes side decoder network and central decoder network. When the decoder receives only one of the two multiple description code streams, side decoder network is used to obtain side reconstructed image of acceptable quality. When two descriptions are received, the high quality reconstructed image is obtained. In addition, instead of quantization with additive uniform noise, and SSIM loss and distance loss combine to train multiple description encoder networks to ensure that they can share structural information. Experimental results show that the proposed framework performs better than traditional multiple description coding methods.
After emerging of Microsoft Kinect, the interest in three-dimensional (3D) depth image was significantly increased. Depth image data of an object can be converted to 3D coordinates by simple arithmetic calculation and then can be reconstructed as a 3D model on computer. However, because the surface coordinates can be acquired only from the front area facing Kinect, total solid which has a closed surface cannot be reconstructed. In this paper, 3D registration method for multiple Kinects was suggested, in which surface information from each Kinect was simultaneously collected and registered in real time to build 3D total solid. To unify relative coordinate system used by each Kinect, 3D perspective transform was adopted. Also, to detect control points which are necessary to generate transformation matrix, 3D randomized Hough transform was used. Once transform matrices were generated, real time 3D reconstruction of various objects was possible. To verify the usefulness of suggested method, human arms were 3D reconstructed and the volumes of them were measured by using four Kinects. This volume measuring system was developed to monitor the level of lymphedema of patients after cancer treatment and the measurement difference with medical CT was lower than 5%, expected CT reconstruction error.
LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system has a profound impact on geoinformatics. The laser mapping system is now recognized as being a viable system to produce the digital surface model rapidly and efficiently. Indeed the number of its applications and users has grown at a surprising rate in recent years. Interest is now focused on the reconstruction of buildings in urban areas from LiDAR data. Although with present technology objects can be extracted and reconstructed automatically using LiDAR data, the quality issue of the results is still major concern in terms of geometric accuracy. It would be enormously beneficial to the geoinformatics industry if geometrically accurate modeling of topographic surface including man-made objects could be produced automatically. The objectives of this study are to reconstruct buildings using airborne LiDAR data and to evaluate accuracy of the result. In these regards, firstly systematic errors involved with ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) system are introduced. Secondly, the overall LiDAR data quality was estimated based on the ground check points, then classifying the laser points was performed. In this study, buildings were reconstructed from the classified as building laser point clouds. The most likely planar surfaces were estimated by the least-square method using the laser points classified as being planes. Intersecting lines of the planes were then computed and these were defined as the building boundaries. Finally, quality of the reconstructed building was evaluated.

In recent years, unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) have been used to search for lost or stolen radioactive sources to avoid radiation exposure for operators. To achieve autonomous localization of radioactive sources, the UGVs must have the ability to automatically determine the next radiation measurement location instead of following a predefined path. Also, the radiation field of radioactive sources has to be reconstructed or inverted utilizing discrete measurements to obtain the radiation intensity distribution in the area of interest. In this study, we propose an effective source localization framework and method, in which UGVs are able to autonomously explore in the radiation area to determine the location of radioactive sources through an iterative process: path planning, radiation field reconstruction and estimation of source location. In the search process, the next radiation measurement point of the UGVs is fully predicted by the design path planning algorithm. After obtaining the measurement points and their radiation measurements, the radiation field of radioactive sources is reconstructed by the Gaussian process regression (GPR) model based on machine learning method. Based on the reconstructed radiation field, the locations of radioactive sources can be determined by the peak analysis method. The proposed method is verified through extensive simulation experiments, and the real source localization experiment on a Cs-137 point source shows that the proposed method can accurately locate the radioactive source with an error of approximately 0.30 m. The experimental results reveal the important practicality of our proposed method for source autonomous localization tasks.

The irreversible 9/7 JPEG2000, which is one of sub-band coding techniques, has a problem of severe picture quality distortion at the edge and the background caused by the quantization error below 0.15bpp. In this paper, to solve such problems we propose a VQ(Visual Quantizer) based on L-pdf(Laplace probability density function) statistical characteristics of high frequency sub-bands. The proposed VQ is designed by visual parameter for improving the subjective quality and weighting parameter for increasing the compression ratio. A proposed method, based on 9/7 JPEG2000 scheme, gives the high subjective quality to reconstructed images below 0.15bpp and provides minimum MSE(Mean-Squared Error) regardless of the compression ratio.

WT(Wavelet Transform) is used to avoid blocking effect that is the disadvantage of JPEG using DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform). Because the proposed coding scheme is the same as JPEG, the proposed algorithm is compatible with that of JPEG. To achieve the goal, WT'ed image is reconstructed into 8$\times$8 coding block. Each coding block is quantized with the proposed weighting matrix that is derived from human visual characteristic and error analysis in WT'ed domain. By experiments, the proposed algorithm is superior to JPEG, in terms of PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and WMSE(Weighted Mean Square Error).

We present an optimized integer cosine transform(OICT) as an alternative approach to the conventional discrete cosine transform(DCT), and its fast computational algorithm. In the actual implementation of the OICT, we have used the techniques similar to those of the orthogonal integer transform(OIT). The normalization factors are approximated to single one while keeping the reconstruction error at the best tolerable level. By obtaining a single normalization factor, both forward and inverse transform are performed using only the integers. However, there are so many sets of integers that are selected in the above manner, the best OICT matrix obtained through value minimizing the Hibert-Schmidt norm and achieving fast computational algorithm. Using matrix decomposing, a fast algorithm for efficient computation of the order-8 OICT is developed, which is minimized to 20 integer multiplications. This enables us to implement a high performance 2-D DCT processor by replacing the floating point operations by the integer number operations. We have also run the simulation to test the performance of the order-8 OICT with the transform efficiency, maximum reducible bits, and mean square error for the Wiener filter. When the results are compared to those of the DCT and OIT, the OICT has out-performed them all. Furthermore, when the conventional DCT coefficients are reduced to 7-bit as those of the OICT, the resulting reconstructed images were critically impaired losing the orthogonal property of the original DCT. However, the 7-bit OICT maintains a zero mean square reconstruction error.
Purpose: It is essential for the steel industry to produce steel products without unexpected downtime to reduce costs and produce high quality products. A hot strip rolling mill consists of many mechanical and electrical units. In condition monitoring and diagnosis, various units could fail for unknown reasons. Methods: In this study, we propose an effective method to detect units with abnormal status early to minimize system downtime. The early warning problem with various units was first defined. An autoencoder was modeled to detect abnormal states. An application of the proposed method was also implemented in a simulated field-data analysis. Results: We can compare images of original data and reconstructed images, as well as visually identify differences between original and reconstruction images. We confirmed that normal and abnormal states can be distinguished by reconstruction error of autoencoder. Experimental results show the possibility of prediction due to the increase of reconstruction error from just before equipment failure. Conclusion: In this paper, hot strip roughing mill monitoring method using autoencoder is proposed and experiments are performed to study the benefit of the autoencoder.
We aimed to setup an adaptive radiation therapy platform using cone-beam CT (CBCT) and multileaf collimator (MLC) log data and also intended to analyze a trend of dose calculation errors during the procedure based on a phantom study. We took CT and CBCT images of Catphan-600 (The Phantom Laboratory, USA) phantom, and made a simple step-and-shoot intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) plan based on the CT. Original plan doses were recalculated based on the CT ($CT_{plan}$) and the CBCT ($CBCT_{plan}$). Delivered monitor unit weights and leaves-positions during beam delivery for each MLC segment were extracted from the MLC log data then we reconstructed delivered doses based on the CT ($CT_{recon}$) and CBCT ($CBCT_{recon}$) respectively using the extracted information. Dose calculation errors were evaluated by two-dimensional dose discrepancies ($CT_{plan}$ was the benchmark), gamma index and dose-volume histograms (DVHs). From the dose differences and DVHs, it was estimated that the delivered dose was slightly greater than the planned dose; however, it was insignificant. Gamma index result showed that dose calculation error on CBCT using planned or reconstructed data were relatively greater than CT based calculation. In addition, there were significant discrepancies on the edge of each beam while those were less than errors due to inconsistency of CT and CBCT. $CBCT_{recon}$ showed coupled effects of above two kinds of errors; however, total error was decreased even though overall uncertainty for the evaluation of delivered dose on the CBCT was increased. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate dose calculation errors separately as a setup error, dose calculation error due to CBCT image quality and reconstructed dose error which is actually what we want to know.
The compression of video data is intended for real-time transmission of band-limited channels. Compressed video bit-streams are very sensitive to transmission error. If we lose packets or receive them with errors during transmission, not only the current frame will be corrupted, but also the error will propagate to succeeding frames due to the spatio-temporal predictive coding structure of sequences. Error detection and concealment is a good approach to reduce the bad influence on the reconstructed visual quality. To increase concealment efficiency, we need to get some more accurate error detection algorithm. In this paper, We hide specific data into the motion vector difference of each macro-block, which is obtained from the procedure of inter prediction mode in H.264/AVC. Then, the location of errors can be detected easily by checking transmitted specific data in decoder. We verified that the proposed algorithm generates good performances in PSNR and subjective visual quality through the computer simulation by H.324M mobile simulation tool.
