Mechanism of lignin biodegradation caused by basidiomycetes and the history of lignin biodegradation studies were briefly reviewed. The important roles of fungal extracellular ligninolytic enzymes such as lignin and manganese peroxidases (LiP and MnP) were also summarized. These enzymes were unique in their catalytic mechanisms and substrate specificities. Either LiP or MnP system is capable of oxidizing a variety of aromatic substrates via a one-electron oxidation. Extracellular fungal system for aromatic degradation is non-specific, which recently attracts many people working a bioremediation field. On the other hand, an intracellular degradation system for aromatic compounds is rather specific in the fungal cell. Structurally similar compounds were prepared and metabolized, indicating that an intracellular degradation strategy consisted of the cellular systems for substrate recognition and metabolic response. It was assumed that lignin-degrading fungi might be needed to develop multiple metabolic pathways for a variety of aromatic compounds caused by the action of non-specific ligninolytic enzymes on lignin. Our recent results on chemical stress responsible factors analyzed using mRNA differential display techniques were also mentioned.
The method of vocal tract normalization has been known as a successful method for improving the accuracy of speech recognition. A frequency warping procedure based low complexity and maximum likelihood has been generally applied for vocal tract normalization. In this paper, we propose a new power spectrum warping procedure that can be improve on vocal tract normalization performance than a frequency warping procedure. A mechanism for implementing this method can be simply achieved by modifying the power spectrum of filter bank in Mel-frequency cepstrum feature(MFCC) analysis. Experimental study compared our Proposal method with the well-known frequency warping method. The results have shown that the power spectrum warping is better 50% about the recognition performance than the frequency warping.
Toll-like receptor (TLR) family proteins, type I transmembrane proteins, play a central role in human innate immune response by recognizing common structural patterns in diverse molecules from bacteria, viruses and fungi. Recently four structures of the TLR and ligand complexes have been determined by high resolution x-ray crystallographic technique. In this review we summarize reported structures of TLRs and their proposed activation mechanisms. The structures demonstrate that binding of agonistic ligands to the extracellular domains of TLRs induces homo- or heterodimerization of the receptors. Dimerization of the TLR extracellular domains brings their two C-termini into close proximity. This suggests a plausible mechanism of TLR activation: ligand induces dimerization of the extracellular domains, which enforces juxtaposition of intracellular signaling domains for recruitment of intracellular adaptor proteins for signal initiation.
In this paper, a visual pattern recognition system is proposed, which can recognize both a pattern and its location. This system, referred to as the expanded neocognitron, has the following capabilities: (1) A higher performance in extraction of features, and (2) A new capability for recognizing the locations of patterns. This system adopts the learning and recognizing mechanism of the neocognitron. First, the ability to classify pattern is enhanced by improving the mechanisms of feature extraction and learning algorithm. Second, the function of detecting the location of each pattern is realized by developing an architecture which does not reduce structure, i.e., the unit density is constant all the way from the input stage to the output stage.

Enantioselectivity of the propranolol on β-cyclodextrin was simulated by molecular modeling. Monte Carlo (MC) docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were applied to investigate the molecular mechanism of enantioselective difference of both enantiomeric complexes. An energetic analysis of MC docking simulations coupled to the MD simulations successfully explains the experimental elution order of propranolol enantiomers. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that average energy difference between the enantiomeric complexes, frequently used as a measure of chiral recognition, depends on the length of the simulation time. We found that, only in case of much longer MD simulations, noticeable chiral separation was observed.
A new neural network architecture for the recognition of patterns from images is proposed, which is partially based on the results of physiological studies. The proposed network is composed of multi-layers and the nerve cells in each layer are connected by spatial filters which approximate receptive fields in optic nerve fields. In the proposed method, patterns recognition for complicated images is carried out using global features as well as local features such as lines and end-points. A new generating method of matched filters representing global features is proposed in this network.
Sequence tagging is an important task in Natural Language Processing (NLP), in which the Named Entity Recognition (NER) is the key issue. So far the most widely adopted model for NER in NLP is that of combining the neural network of bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) and the statistical sequence prediction method of Conditional Random Field (CRF). In this work, we improve the prediction accuracy of the BiLSTM by supporting an aligned word representation mechanism. We have performed experiments on multilingual (English, Spanish and Dutch) datasets and confirmed that our proposed model outperformed the existing state-of-the-art models.
The security and privacy issues derived from unsecurely storing biometrics templates in biometric authentication/ recognition systems have opened a new research area about how to secure the stored biometric templates. Biometrics-based key generation is the newest approach that provides not only a mechanism to protect stored biometric templates in authentication/ recognition systems, but also a method to integrate biometric systems with cryptosystems. Therefore, this approach has attracted much attention from researchers worldwide. A review of current research state to summarize the achievements and remaining works is necessary for further works. In this study, we first outlined the requirements and the primary challenges when implementing these systems. We then summarize the proposed techniques and achievements in representative studies on biometrics-based key generation. From that, we give a discussion about the accomplishments and remaining works with the corresponding challenges in order to provide a direction for further researches in this area.
A new chiral stationary phase (CSP 2) derived from cyclohexylamide of (S)-naproxen has been prepared. CSP 2 has shown greater enantioselectivities for the two enantiomers of N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-a-amino esters and amides than the CSP derived from 3,5-dimethylanilide of (S)-naproxen (CSP 1) as expected from the reciprocity conception of chiral recognition. However, CSP 2 has been found to be worse than CSP 1 in resolving N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-a-arylalkylamines, supporting the previously proposed chiral recognition mechanism which utilizes the 3,5-dimethylphenyl group of CSP 1 as an alternative π-basic interaction site. In addition, CSP 2 has been found to be reasonably good in resolving the two enantiomers of a variety of other π-acidic racemates.
