Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was recognized as a potential source of forage. To reduce the production cost, we should insure large cultivation area. The one of the best candidate places to expand the useful kenaf production was 'Saemangeum' reclaimed land. To confirm the possibility of kenaf growth in reclaimed land, we seeding and cultivated the kenaf in 'Saemangeum'. The germination percentage of kenaf on 5.0 dS/m soil salinity was 18%. It is less 66% than that of 4.0 dS/m soil salinity and at 6.0 dS/m, the germination percentage of kenaf was under 10%. The growth and development of kenaf in reclaimed land grew worse with increasing soil salinity. The stem diameter which the most important factor that decide the value and yield of product was upper 2.6 cm when soil salinity maintained under 4.0 dS/m, but if soil salinity marked over 4.0 dS/m, the stem diameter of kenaf was drop under 2.0 cm and it deteriorate the number of leaves per plant by 20~46%. The necrosis on older tip and marginal leaves were noted approximately first month after seeding which was correlated directly with the salinity levels of reclaimed soil. Reduction of total yield was coincide with increasing levels of EC. If soil salinity over 5.0 dS/m, the amount of decreased by soil salinity was 51% than that of non-reclaimed region. The allowable soil salinity level of which could be maintained within 20% reduction rate was 4.2 dS/m. Consequently kenaf can be grown successfully with moderately saline soil condition. However, salt levels in excess of 4.2 dS/m severely have restricted plant growth and development and will result in significant yield reduction.

This research was conducted to construct a tree belt around Saemangeum reclaimed land using various planting methods and to analyze initial growth amount, to provide practical data to construct tree belt of various purposes. Tree species used in tree belt construction were Pinus thunbergii and Quercus serrata, and the main planting treatment methods used were categorized by existence of windy fence, mixed planting, and un-mixed planting. Growth amount analysis was conducted using ANOVA to compare growth amounts in different experimental groups and Duncan's multiple range test. Growth amount analysis results of tree belt by planting method showed that it is most statistically plausible to install 50% porous windy fence from the direction of wind and frost, followed by planting P. thunbergii and Q. serrata in areas that require mixed tree species tree belt around Saemangeum reclaimed land. In areas where un-mixed planting tree belt is required, it was appropriate to use P. thunbergii alone without a windy fence. Lastly, if the purpose of the tree belt is limited to rapid growth, it was most ideal to plant P. thunbergii alone (without windy fence) or install 50% porous windy fence from the direction of wind and frost, followed by planting P. thunbergii and Q. serrata. This research is based on initial growth amount of tree belt and there is a need for a long-term monitoring of tree belt growth to increase tree-planting success rate in establishing tree belt according to Saemangeum internal development.

This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of warm-season turfgrasses and to find out suitable turfgrass species on Saemangeum reclaimed land. Twenty native zoysiagrass(Zoysia sinica, Z. matrella, Z. japonica, Medium-leaf type zoysiagrass(hybrid zoysiagrass)) and bermudagrass(Cynodon dactylon) collected from Korea were used in this study. Total stolon length and the number of stolon per square meter, relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, and coverage rate were analyzed for 2 year. C. dactylon showed not only the most growth response with high relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, which were 19.9% and 66.3%, but also resulted in higher level of turf visual quality compared to others. Whereas Z. japonica showed the least growth response with low relative growth rate of shoot and stolon, which were 2.4% and 0.7%. Although all warm-season turfgrasses took root and grew up well, there were different growth rates between the interspecies. Z. sinica 'Z2034', Z. matrella 'Z4091', Z. japonica 'Z1064', Medium-leaf type zoysiagrass 'ZN6019' and C. dactylon 'BN7014' were the greatest growth rate of shoot and stolon. These results will be useful for selecting salt tolerant breeding lines and also used to develop a turfgrass cultivar with strong salinity tolerance through continuous monitoring.
In order to compare phosphorus (P) behavior of livestock manure compost (LMC) and chemical fertilizer (CF) applied to the sea-reclaimed land soils, incubation experiments were conducted for five weeks. Four soils differing textural classes, sandy loam and clay loam, and electric conductivity (EC) value, high and low, were applied with CF and LMC. LMC was applied at the level of 0, 1, 2, and 3% on the soil weight basis and CF was applied at the same levels of P as LMC. The results showed that increase of P application rate of CF and LMC led to linearly increase available $P_2O_5$ and $0.01M\;CaCl_2$ extractable P contents regardless of soil texture and EC. However, 0.01M $CaCl_2$ extractable P from soil applied with CF was significantly higher than with LMC. Correlation analysis between $0.01M-CaCl_2$ extractable P and fractionated P by different extraction methods showed that $0.01M-CaCl_2$ extractable P positively correlated with KCl-P (soluble and exchangeable P) and HCl-P (Ca and Mg bound P). However, NaOH-P (Fe and Al bound P and organic P) and residual P was adverse. The amount of NaOH-P significantly influenced to the amount of 0.01M $CaCl_2$ extractable P of CF and LMC in the soils. The application of LMC at sandy loam soil could be carried out in the consideration of nutrient leaching and crop uptake.
The effect of flooding and soil salinity on the growth of yam (Dioscorea batatas) were studied on the experimantal site temporally established in the south-eastern part of Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land (near Gwanghwal myun, Gimjae-gun, Jellabukdo, Korea). Yam seedlings planted by using aerial bulblet as alternative of sliced tubers, were grown for 20-days and transplanted in black-vinyl mulched ridges (about 20 cm in height) at 70cm interval by $20{\times}60cm$ spacing in the $4^{th}$ of May, 2010. Soil salinity was maintained at lower than 1.2 ds $m^{-1}$ during the growing period and did not result to salt injury in all plants. However, flooding injury very seriously led to plant death and plant mortality rates at $67{\pm}21$ and $82{\pm}9%$ of yam plants in the compost and no compost treatment, respectively, died by heavy flooding during the rainy summer season. The main reasons of the flooding injury included the decreased rainfall acceptable capacity (RAC) after the rising of water table and a slowdown of water infiltration rate after the formation of an impermeable soil crust in the furrow bottom with continuous and heavy downpour during the rainy summer season. The effect of compost treatment was not statistically observed because of the severe spatial difference caused by wet injury, although yam tuber yield was higher at 30 kg $10^{-1}$ in the compost treatment than in the no-compost treatment at 20 kg $10^{-1}$. However, the size of tuber ranged at 1.23 to 1.60 cm in diameter and 3.7 to 5.0 cm in length in all both treatment, which means they are still reproducible for the next cropping season. Conclusively, proper counter-flooding measure and soil salinity control critically important for successful yam production in Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land.

South Korea is largely dependent on imports of forage crops. In order to raise the self-sufficiency rate of forage crops, it is necessary to cultivate forage crops in 135,100 ha reclaimed land of South Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the growth of halophytes and forage crops in order to search for stable plants on reclaimed land. The plants were cultured in Hoagland solution and grown at 0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% of salt concentrations. Plants with good growth at 0.5% of salt concentration were halophytes such as Suaeda asparagoides and Salsola komarovii. Salicornia herbacea and Suaeda maritima showed good growth at 2.0% salinity, and Suaeda maritima showed stable growth at all of salt concentrations. In conclusion, Suaeda asparagoides showed the best growth at 0.5% of salt concentration and was considered the most biomass at reclaimed land in Korea with less than 0.5% of salt concentration.
The IIA(Inchon International Airport) which will function as the HUB airport in the northeast Asian region in the upcoming 21th century will be located in the reclaimed land with sand dredged in the vicinity of project area between Youngjong and Yongyu islands. The original ground is composed of soft clayey silt (ML) or silty clay (CL). The reclaimed land is classified as being SP-SM and having poor gradation of Cu<3 which resulted in the anticipation for difficulty in compaction (compaction index = 0.6~0.7). This anticipation shedded light on the necessity of performing test compactions for the thickness of 3~5meters of reclaimed land, aiming at the discovery of effective and economical compaction method. Upon the call for the test compaction performance 4 different compaction methods have been selected for trial from the research done on the international and local academic papers, past experience with compaction works, and their written materials. For the precise interparetation of test results, the ground survey and measurements have been performed. The Hydraulic Hammer Compaction has been chosen as the most optimum in accordance withe the test results.
According to the field measurement of dredging-reclaimed land, the actual self-weight consolidation settlement has been frequently reported to be less than the predicted values based on the laboratory tests results. The author estimates that one of the reasons is the reduction of the compressibility due to the sedimentation of the dredging material, Furthemore, the aging effect is ignored in the consolidation characteristics of the very low stress range as a pump dredging-reclaimed land. In this paper, a series of seepage consotidation tests has been carried out by applying the seepage force to the specimen prepared by sedimentation in consolidmeter in order to clarflfy the aging-effect on the compressibility of dredging clayey soil, Also, with a view to overcome unstable consolidation solution occurring in the case where the initial water content is higher as pumpdredging reclaimed land, the finite difference analysis technique using predictorforrector method is suggested that it gets good agreement with ezperimental results. Finally, the compressibility of the dredging clayey soil is depended on self-weight consolidation time.

This research was experimented to clarity the effects of the calcareous materials which were utilized to improve the soil in reclaimed tidal land. It is located at the Kang-Hwa polder. Kil-sang myun, Kang-Hwa Gun, Kyung-gi Do. The results obtained are as follows 1. Comparing with the yields of rice in each treatment, it is noticed that the plot treated with ca-humated 1.0% gets the most effect to improve the soil, and the next ones are in the order of the plots treated with raw straw, gypsum and calcium hydroxide. 2. Treating the calcium or organic matter in soil is evaluated to increase the yields of rice in paddy fields of tidal land, because of increasing the number of ear per plant, the number of grain per ear, the weight of 1,000 grains and somthing like that. 3. Adding calcium or organic matter into soil, it makes a good condition for the growth of rice, because of pomoting the formation of soil structure of simple grain type. 4. To improve the soil in reclaimed tidal land, we can separately treat calcium, calcium hydroxide and raw straw in soil, but it is found out the fact that the method of treatment of calcareous materials together with organic matter is more effective.
