  • This study was conducted to investigate the dynamic motion of knife drive system of combine harvester. A computer program was developed to simulate the dynamic motion of the knife drive linkage and its algorithm was evaluated through experiments. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The theorectical horizontal (the direction of knife's reciprocating motion) reaction forces at the supporting point of rocker arm and crank arm were changed in the similar sinusoidal trends with the measured reaction forces. 2. The maximum values of shaking moment and reaction force per one revolution of crank arm followed polynomial trends as the rotational speed of crank shaft increased. The unbalanced force acting on the driving system increased at high speed. Therefore, the rotational speed of crank shaft should be maintained in proper range at increased forward speed to decrease vibration of the knife drive system. 3. The added mass to the crank arm increased the dynamic unbalanced force at the supporting point of rocker arm. It counterbalanced the reaction force at the supporting point of crank arm.

A Study on Meal Time Estimation and Eating Behavior Recognition Considering Movement Using Wrist-Worn Accelerometer with Its Frequency (손목 움직임과 동작 빈도를 고려한 손목형 가속도계의 식사 행위 및 식사 시간 추론 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a method for recognizing eating behavior with almost no motion acceleration. First, by using the acceleration of gravity acting on the wrist direction, we calculate the angle between the gravity and the wrist direction. After that, detect wrist reciprocating motion when peak and vally exist in specific angle band. And then, when accumulate the number of wrist reciprocating motion occurrences are up to 10, then regard as the meal time 5 minutes before the detection time. Also, estimate the meal time only if its duration is more than 7 minutes. Using the data of 2128 minutes, which was collected from four graduate student, the result of the meal time estimation shows 95.63% accuracy.

  • The effect of the pulsation on the particle hold-up in a pulsed wetted column has been studied theoretically for the case of laminar region and experimentally for the cases of transient and turbulent regions. The experiment has been carried out by employing water as fluid medium and solid particles. The pulsation has been given by the reciprocating motion of a piston. The results of the investigation show that the pulsation would not give apparent effect on the particle hold-up but would increase the total travelling length of the particle.

Enhancement of Mixing Performance in Viscous Liquid Using an Electromagnetically Driven Microrobot (초소형 로봇을 이용한 점도성 유체의 혼합 효율 향상)

  • This paper presents an electromagnetically driven microrobot for the enhancement of mixing performance in high viscous liquid media such as blood and bone marrow. First, an electromagnetic system was fabricated, and the magnetic flux density generated from the system was compared with the theoretical value. Second, the reciprocating motion of the microrobot was demonstrated in microchannel using electromagnetic system. As a proof of concept, the mixing performance by the electromagnetically driven microrobot in high viscous liquid was investigated using safranin solution. As a result, it was completely mixed within 140 s with the reciprocating motion of the microrobot while it took 1680 s for natural diffusion. In addition, the mixing efficiency was quantitatively evaluated through a mixing index obtained by an image analysis. The proposed method provides not only wireless actuation of a microrobot with a simple design but also high mixing performance in variety of high viscous liquid media.

  • For a hermetic reciprocating compressor, it has been known that the gas pulsation in the suction line affects the compressor performance, and suction muffler design has been focused on both of noise reduction and minimum pressure drop across the muffler. Some studies have been carried out on the mutual interaction between the gas pulsation and the cylinder pressure to investigate some supercharging effects, but their efforts were limited on rather simple geometries. In this paper, interaction of the gas pulsation in the compressor suction line with cylinder pressure via suction valve motion has been calculated; for the gas pulsation analysis, modeling of Helmholtz resonators in series was used, and for cylinder pressure calculation, energy equations was set up for the gas inside the cylinder. For demonstration of this calculation method, four different types of suction line configurations for a hermetic reciprocating compressor were compared in terms of compressor performance and gas pulsation level.

  • Generally Cam-Follower systems consist of two elements: Cam is for rotating motion and follower for reciprocating motion. Depending on the shape of cam and type of follower, the motion of cam-follower system is determined. Thus design process and analysis process must be well defined. The design process means to find the coordinates of cam shape which can be defined the given motion of follower and the analysis process means to determine the motion curve of follower corresponding to the given cam based on the dimensions of a cam-follower system. This paper consists of two parts: One is development of a numerical method for design and analysis of cam-follower systems, the other is for development of a CAD program and its application. As the first part of the paper, an iterative contact method is proposed. This method can calculate the contact points between cam and roller and determine their contact angles iteratively. The second part of the paper presents the structure of a CAD program and its availability to the industrial applications.

  • A shaft of a reciprocating compressor receives bending force by piston, which makes movement of the shaft. The movement of the shaft affects durability and becomes a source of noise. In this paper, a cylinder is modeled by considering motion of a suction and discharge valve. The journal bearing is modeled by Bernoulli's equation. The trajectory of shaft which is considered cylinder and journal bearing can be calculated by finite element method. It will help a design of shaft to increase durability and reduce noise.

  • In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.

Relationship between Oxidation and Wear of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene for Total Joint Arthroplasty

  • The most widely-used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), for the total joint arthroplasty degrades after gamma-irradiation sterilization through the progressive oxidation in a shelf and in vivo. Oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to decrease in mechanical properties. In this study the relationship between post-gamma-irradiation aging time and wear of UHMWPE was investigated. Six retrieved polyethylene hip liners implanted for 3-16 years and then stored in air for 1.5-6.5 years until tests were used. Two types of pin-on-disk wear testing were conducted by the uni-directional repeat pass rotating and by the linear reciprocating stainless steel disks against stationary polyethylene pins under 4Mpa at 1Hz with bovine serum lubrication in ambient environment. Wear of retrieved polyethylene hip liners does not have direct correlation with in vivo or total aging time. Linear reciprocal sliding motion generated more remarkable wear than uni-directional repeat pass sliding motion. It indicates that kinematic motion affects very crucially on the wear of aged UHMWPE having brittle white band region.
