  • LG Electronics developed linear compressors for a household refrigerator which can reduce energy consumption up to $24\%$ by only Drop-ln instead of a conventional reciprocating compressor. The linear compressor is composed of a linear oscillating motor, a piston directly coupled with the linear motor, a cylinder and the specific discharge system of LG. Because of this free-piston structure, the position of the piston can be changeable according to the voltage variation, load variation and so on. By this reason, LG linear compressor has been in need of an additional unit to control the position of the free-piston stably. In this paper we will introduce the innovative technology which is able to operate the linear compressor without controlling the piston position like a conventional reciprocating compressor.

  • For large reciprocating compressors in parallel operation, an analytical study has been carried out on the gas pulsation in associated discharge piping lines. Since the pressure pulsation at a valve, valve dynamics, and the gas flow rate through the valve are interrelated, affecting one another, these need to be solved simultaneously. Acoustic transfer matrix method, which relates acoustic pressure and velocity at one location to those at another location, has been adopted to calculate the effect of the gas flow at one valve location on the gas pulsation at other valve locations.

  • For the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise, 2 stage reciprocating air compressors can have various cylinder arrangement: opposed, in-line, and V type. This paper presents an effective method to calculate the inertia forces and to design counter weight. This method is based on the complex representation for the orbital behavior of the compressor shaft. This method helps to find the optimal balancing rate easily to reduce the inertial force or moment. This paper shows that the residual inertia forces of the single throw shafts and the residual inertia moments of the double throw shafts remain to be imbalanced.

  • Renewability and pollutant free energy source makes hydrogen energy popular rapidly. Hydrogen gas pressure which is after passing through reciprocating compressor part has high pulsation wave form. A unit, snubber is used as compressor components to reduce the harmful pulsation waveform and to remove the impurities in the hydrogen gas. An experiment has been conducted to investigate the pulsation reduction performance of a steel pipe used in snubber system. The amplitude of pressure reduction were varied from $0.054{\sim}0.321\;kPa$ for 10 hz to 60 hz motor speed. Compressor operation by motor with 10 to 60 hz were resulted in reduction of pressure pulsation from 16.415% to 35.151%. Pressure losses were varied from $0.001%{\sim}0.759%$, and pressure drop per centimeter of the steel pipe were varied from $0.0160{\sim}16.03\;Pa$.

  • The magnitude of output torque in a BLDC Motor depends on torque angle so that the exact initial position of rotor is essentially required for good starting. This paper presents a novel starting control method for smooth starting in a position-sensorless controlled BLDC motor drive for reciprocating compressor of refrigerator. The proposed method starts a BLDC motor using information on the initial position of rotor, determined from current response characteristics, and shows robust starting capability to starting load variations. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through experimental results.

  • In the ship-building industry, reciprocating air condensing compressors are usually applied in the HVAC system because of their good performance, efficiency and the convenience. However, the inertia force and pressure fluctuation of the compressor may generate unexpected excessive noise and vibration in the near by cabins. This paper presents a theoretical background and appropriate countermeasures on the reduction of structure-borne noise from the compressors.

  • The suction muffler of a reciprocating compressor is used for reducing noise produced by pressure pulsations. According to the shape, the suction muffler is classified into one-chamber type, two-chamber type, Helmholtz resonator type, pipe-resonator type, and so on. These mufflers are used according to the characteristics of the frequency of compressor noise. In this study, four pole parameters have been used for calculating Transmission Loss of the muffler, and Insertion Loss has been acquired for the optimum design of the muffler by the experiment.

  • A multi-stage reciprocating air compressor has many pistons and conneting rods to one crank throw, while a general engine has one connecting rod. Those make its design hard to apply balance weight design method generally using in an engine design, This study introduces a modified balance weight design method in order to calculate the unbalanced inertia properly. Vibration tests on V/W type air compressor have been conducted to prove the usefulness of design program. It is confirmed that the proposed program is applicable to design of balance weight.

  • In this paper, 3-D reciprocating compressor is taken into flow-structure interaction analysis. The full cycle process consisted of cylinder expansion and compression has been modeled without considering flow leakage through cylinder wall. Fully-coupled FSI analysis of this compressor model was iteratively solved and gives sufficient result with the experimental test. The study is emphasized to thoroughly investigate discharge valve motion, opening and closing, in order to determine discharge valve region which is prone to have high effective stress. The cylinder pressure is successfully validated before conducting impact analyses between discharge valve and other susceptible supported structure. Velocity profile has been obtained in FSI analysis is used as initial condition to carry out further impact analyses. Stress result of discharge valve and valve spring gives preliminary estimation of higher stress area due to its impact phenomena.

  • In this paper, a dynamic analysis of the reciprocating compression mechanism of a small refrigeration compressor is performed. In the problem formulation of the mechanism dynamics, the viscous frictional force between the piston and the cylinder wall is considered in order to determine the coupled dynamic behaviors of the piston and the crankshaft. Simultaneous solutions are obtained for the equations of motion of the reciprocating mechanism and the time-dependent Reynolds equations for the lubricating film between the piston and the cylinder wall and for the oil films on the journal bearings. The hydrodynamic forces of the journal bearings are calculated by using a finite bearing model along with the Gumbel boundary condition. A Newton-Raphson procedure is employed in solving the nonlinear equations for the piston and crankshaft. The developed computer program can be used to calculate the complete trajectories of the piston and the crankshaft as functions of the crank angle under compressor-running conditions. The results explored the effects of the radial clearance of the piston, oil viscosity, and mass and mass moment of inertia of the piston and connecting rod on the stability of the compression mechanism.
