In this paper, we present a system design for location determination inside the ship. Since the GPS signal can not be received in the interior of the large vessel, we use the vessel wireless AP (Access Point) RSSI (received signal strength indication) to accurately measure the position. We convert the RSSI for the 3 AP's into distance through the Friis formula and get the location through triangulation. The signal strength varies irregularly due to noise making it difficult to obtain the exact location. Thus Kalman filter is used to real-time position correction, that is store in a server database.

In the communication channel, the received signal is affected by many factors that can cause errors. These effects mean that received signal strength (RSS) based methods incur more errors in measuring distance and consequently result in low precision in the location detection process. As one of the approaches to overcome these problems, we propose using direction calibration to improve the performance of the RSS-based method for distance measurement, and sequentially a weighted least squares (WLS) method using reliability factors in conjunction with a conventional RSS weighting matrix is proposed to solve an over-determined localization process. The proposed scheme focuses on the features of the RSS method to improve the performance, and these effects are proved by the simulation results.

Outdoors we can easily acquire our accurate location by GPS. However, the GPS signal can't be acquired indoors because of its weak signal power level. Adequate positioning method is demanded for many indoor positioning applications. At present, wireless local area network (WLAN) is widely installed in various areas such as airport, campus, and park. This paper proposes a positioning algorithm using WLAN signal strength to provide the position of the WLAN user indoors. There are two methods for WLAN based positioning, the signal propagation method uses signal strength model over space and the empirical method uses RF power propagation database. The proposed method uses the probability distribution of the power propagation and the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) algorithm based on power strength DB. Test results show that the proposed method can provide reasonably accurate position information.

The beacon receiver is an equipment which detects and measures the signal strength of transmitting satellite beacon signal. Beacon signals transmitted by satellites are low power continuous wave(CW) signals without any modulation intended for antenna steering to satellite direction and power control purposes on the earth. The beacon signal detection method using a very narrow band analog filter and RSSI(Received Signal Strength Intensity) has been typically used. However, it requires the implementation to track the frequency at the beacon receiver, thus a beacon frequency variation of the satellite due to temperature changes and long-term operation. Therefore, in this paper, the beacon signal detection receiver is designed by using a very narrow band digital filter array for a faster acquisition and SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) method detection. For this purpose, by calculating the satellite link budget with the rain attenuation between satellite and ground station, and then extracting the received $C/N_o$ of the beacon signal, this work derives the bandwidth and the array number of the configured digital filter that gives the required C/N.

Recently, the wireless communication applications are studied in various environment by the development of short range communication system like wireless sensor networks. This paper presents the analysis of localization schemes for ship application using received signal strength. The localization schemes using received signal strength from wireless networks are classified under two methods, which are Range based method and Range free method. Range based methods estimate the location with least square estimation based on estimated distance using path-loss model. Range free methods estimated the location with the information of anchor nodes linked to target. Simulation results show the appropriate localization scheme for each cabin environments based on the empirical path-loss model in warship's internal space.

In this paper, we propose an optimal path search algorithm that applies the received signal strength between a mobile device and a satellite. Because the common path search algorithm is only based on the shortest path search, it is difficult to provide stable multimedia services for the satellite mobile devices. The proposed algorithm provides the stable communication environment for the satellite mobile devices based on received signal strength. In Satellite communications, changes in the radio quality are severe depending on the receiving environment. Therefore, an accurate analysis of the receiving environment characteristics is very important for providing stable multimedia services of satellite communications. The causes of radio attenuation are atmosphere attenuation, vegetation attenuation and buildings attenuation. These factors were applied to analyze the received signal strength. The proposed algorithm can search the optimal path in urban for stable satellite multimedia services.
Recent technological advances allow us to envision a future where large numbers of low-power, inexpensive sensor devices are densely embedded in the physical environment, operating together in a wireless network. This paper considers localization for mobile sensors; localization must be invoked periodically to enable the sensors to track their location. Localizing more frequently allows the sensors to more accurately track their location in the presence of mobility. In this paper, we test and analyze the accuracy of a moving node localization by Received Signal Strength (RSS).
In this paper, an efficient and robust localization algorithm using Receiver Signal Strength Difference (RSSD) for a non-cooperative RF emitter is given. The proposed algorithm firstly calculate the center point and radius of Apollonius's circles and then estimate the intersection point of the circles based on Time of Arrival concept. And this paper also compares the performance of RSSD localization algorithms such as Non-linear Least Squares and Linearized Least Squares by Lines of Position (LOP) with the proposed algorithm. And some conclusions have been reached regarding the relative accuracy, robustness and computational cost of these algorithms.

In this paper, the 3D positioning of IoT sensors with the Unity engine of android platform based home-hub was proposde for IoT(Internet of Things) users. Especially, the monitoring of IoT sensor and battery status was designed with the clustering of IoT sensor's position. The 3D positioning of RSSI(received signal strength indicator) and angle for new IoT sensor according to clustering method was described with the cooperation of beacon and received arrival signal time. This unity engine based smart hub platform can monitor the working situation of IoT sensors, and apply 3D video with texture for the life-cycling of many IoT sensors simultaneously. rs was described with RSSI(received signal strength indicator) and received angle.

For cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs) that use underlay-based spectrum access, the location of the primary user (PU) plays an important role in the power control of the secondary users (SUs), because the SUs must keep the minimum interference level required by the PU. Received signal strength (RSS)-based localization schemes provide low-cost implementation and low complexity, thus it is suitable for the PU localization in CRSNs. However, the RSS-based localization schemes have a high localization error because they use an inexact path loss exponent (PLE). Thus, applying a RSS-based localization scheme into the PU localization would cause a high interference to the PU. In order to reduce the localization error and improve the channel reuse rate, we propose a RSS-based PU localization scheme that uses distance calibration for CRSNs using underlay model-based spectrum access. Through the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed scheme can provide less localization error as well as more spectrum utilization than the RSS-based PU localization using the mean and the maximum likelihood calibration.
