  • Real-time dynamic substructuring tests have been conducted on a cable-deck system. The cable is representative of a full scale cable for a cable-stayed bridge and it interacts with a deck, numerically modelled as a single-degree-of-freedom system. The purpose of exciting the inclined cable at the bottom is to identify its nonlinear dynamics and to mark the stability boundary of the semi-trivial solution. The latter physically corresponds to the point at which the cable starts to have an out-of-plane response when both input and previous response were in-plane. The numerical and the physical parts of the system interact through a transfer system, which is an actuator, and the input signal generated by the numerical model is assumed to interact instantaneously with the system. However, only an ideal system manifests a perfect correspondence between the desired signal and the applied signal. In fact, the transfer system introduces into the desired input signal a delay, which considerably affects the feedback force that, in turn, is processed to generate a new input. The effectiveness of the control algorithm is measured by using the synchronization technique, while the online adaptive forward prediction algorithm is used to compensate for the delay error, which is present in the performed tests. The response of the cable interacting with the deck has been experimentally observed, both in the presence of delay and when delay is compensated for, and it has been compared with the analytical model. The effects of the interface delay in real-time dynamic substructuring tests conducted on the cable-deck system are extensively discussed.

  • This paper discusses a real time multi-tasking system model and a development environment for an elevator control system. Recently, as the elevator systems become large-scaled and operate with high speed, there are lots of software tasks to be processed with time constraints. Thus, the control systems are designed with distributed control structure and characteristics of typical real time systems. For stuructural design of such real time system, we introduce a multi-tasking model based on a real time operating system model and an software development environment based on virtual protopyping which simulates real system operation in the cross development of a new elevator system with distributed control structure and its system reliability can be verified through numerous field tests.

  • In a (hard) real-time system, every time-critical task must meet its timing constraint, which is typically specified in terms of its deadline. Many computer systems, such as those for open system environment or multimedia services, need an efficient schedulability test for on-line real-time admission control of new jobs. Although various polynomial time schedulability tests have been proposed, they often fail to decide the schedulability of the system precisely when the system is heavily loaded. Furthermore, the most of previous studies on on-line real-time schedulability tests are concentrated on periodic task applications. Thus, this paper presents an efficient on-line real-time schedulability check algorithm which can be used for imprecise real-time system predictability before dispatching of on-line imprecise real-time task system consisted of aperiodic and preemptive task sets when the system is overloaded.

  • A new dynamic scheduling algorithm is proposed for CAN-based real-time system in this paper. The proposed algorithm is extended from an existing EDS(Earliest Deadline Scheduling) approach having a solution to the priority inversion. Using the proposed algorithm, the available bandwidth of network media can be checked dynamically, and consequently arbitration delay causing the miss of deadline can be avoided. Also, non-real time messages can be processed with their bandwidth allocation. Full network utilization and real-time transmission feasibility can be achieved through the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of algorithm, two simulation tests are performed. The first one is transmission data measurement per minute for periodic messages and the second one is feasibility in the system with both periodic messages and non-real time message.

  • An automated system is developed to perform fatigue crack growth tests under constant effective stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K_{eff}$. In the system, crack length and crack opening load are measured in real-time by using the unloading elastic compliance method. The system consists of two personal computers, an analogue electrical subtraction circuit, a stepping motor, a stepping motor driver, a PIO board, and the application software used to integrate the whole system. The performance of the developed system was tested and discussed performing constant ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ crack growth tests on a CT specimen of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The performance of the system is found to be strongly dependent on the accuracy of measurements of crack opening load. Besides constant ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ testing, the system is expected to be successfully applied for automation of various fatigue tests.

  • It is important to obtain real-time data from long-term monitoring of landfills and develop leachate leakage detection system for the integrated management of landfills. A novel real time monitoring system and early leakage detection system was suggested in this study. The suggested monitoring system is composed of two parts; (1) a set of moisture sensors which monitor the areas surrounding the landfill, and (2) a set of moisture and temperature sensors which monitor the landfill inside. For the assessment for landfills stabilization, real-time monitoring system was evaluated in dry and wet cell of pilot-site. In addition, the grid-net electrical conductivity measurement system was also suggested as early leakage detection system. In this study, the field applicability of suggested systems was evaluated through pilot-scale field tests. The results of pilot-scale field model tests indicate that the grid-net electrical conductivity measurement method can be applicable to the detection of landfill leachate at the initial stage of intrusion, and thus has a potential for monitoring leachate leakage at waste landfills.

  • The Solar and Space Weather Research Group (SOS) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is constructing the Space Weather Prediction Center since 2007. As a part of the project, we are developing automatic real-time system of the global 3-D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation. The MHD simulation model of earth's magnetosphere is designed as modified leap-frog scheme by T. Ogino, and it was parallelized by using message passing interface (MPI). Our work focuses on the automatic processing about simulation of 3-D MHD model and visualization of the simulation results. We used PC cluster to compute, and virtual reality modeling language (VRML) file format to visualize the MHD simulation. The system can show the variation of earth's magnetosphere by the solar wind in quasi real time. For data assimilation we used four parameters from ACE data; density, pressure, velocity of solar wind, and z component of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). In this paper, we performed some initial tests and made a animation. The automatic real-time system will be valuable tool to understand the configuration of the solar-terrestrial environment for space weather research.

  • Test device using virtual engine simulator can help reduce the number of engine tests through tests similar to the actual engine tests and repeat the test under the same condition, and thus reduce the engine maintenance and operating costs. Also, as it is possible to easily implement extreme conditions in which it is hard to conduct actual tests, it can prevent engine damages that may happen during the actual engine test under such conditions. In this study, an upgraded small jet engine performance test device was developed that can conduct both real and virtual engine test by applying real-time engine model to the existing micro jet engine performance test device that was previously developed by authors. This newly developed multi-purpose small jet engine performance test device is expected to be used for various educational and research purposes.

  • Roadbed failure due to the rainfall may bring out social and economic demage such as the loss of life and property, the consumption of time and cost for recovery, and the delay of logistics in railway. In this study, the method using Geotextile Container was applied to rehabilitation of the railway roadbed which was failed by rainfall. The real scale tests with the simulated train loading were performed in order to evaluate the dynamic performance at the railway roadbed using Geotextile Container. The results of these tests were compared with unreinforced and reinforced cases with Geotextile Container, respectively. The data gathered by various measurement devices from these real scale tests would be useful to evaluate and understand the roadbed with Geotextile Container. Furthermore, the results of this study would be useful to ensure the workability and to save much time for restoration and to be widely applied to practical use.
