Supporting Real-Time Multimedia Traffic in a Wireless LANs

  • This paper presents a new dynamically adaptable polling scheme for efficient support of real-time traffic over an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN network. The poll scheduling plays an important role in IEEE 802.11 PCF. However, the current version of the polling list management scheme proposed in the IEEE 802.11 standard is inefficient when a variable number of mobile stations have variable packets to transmit. If Point Coordinator has an exact information on the station status, it is possible to efficiently perform polling. In this paper, we suggest an adaptable polling scheme to meet requirements of the stations. In our scheme, each station transmits packets including a piggyback information to inform that it wants to receive a poll in the next polling duration. Simulation results indicate that our scheme may reduces the packet discard ratio and real-time packet transfer delay.

Real-time Impact Evaluation of a Capacity-Building Health Project in Lao PDR

  • This study presents a real-time impact evaluation of a human capacity-building health project in Laos, financed by a Korean aid agency and executed jointly by Laotian and Korean higher educational agencies. The project aims to improve the health status of Laotians by enhancing practicing doctors' clinical performance capacity, to be attained by advancing academic achievement at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Laos. Therefore, this real-time impact evaluation adopted the difference-in-differences regression analysis method, showing that the project improved the academic achievement of the UHS students who were taught by the project fellowship awardees more, compared to the UHS students who were taught by non-fellowship faculty members. It remains to be evaluated whether these UHS students taught by the project fellowship recipients would also perform better clinically in public hospitals in the future.

  • The incidents related to transporting hazardous materials may cause serious impacts on neighborhood and surrounding areas. It is essential to have a real-time safe management system for incidents prevention of transporting hazardous materials. Currently, the system is not integrated into one channel, which makes it difficult to control an incidents response. Another problem is that event status is not appropriately shared among authorities having responsibilities taking down the incidents. This paper investigates previous studies covering the real-time safety management system for hazard material transports and suggests an integrated management system that helps communicate effectively and promptly.

  • A Structure Health Monitoring (SHM) system needs a real-time remote data acquisition system to monitor the status of a structure from anywhere via Internet access. In this paper, we present a data acquisition system that monitors up to 40 Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors remotely in real-time. Using a TCP/IP protocol, users can access information gathered by the sensors from anywhere. An experiment in laboratory conditions has been done to prove the feasibility of our proposed system, which is built in special-purpose monitoring system.

Extension of ReInForM Protocol for (m,k)-firm Real-time Streams in Wireless Sensor Networks

  • For real-time wireless sensor network applications, it is essential to provide different levels of quality of service (QoS) such as reliability, low latency, and fault-tolerant traffic control. To meet these requirements, an (m,k)-firm based real-time routing protocol has been proposed in our prior work, including a novel local transmission status indicator called local DBP (L_DBP). In this paper, a fault recovery scheme for (m,k)-firm real-time streams is proposed to improve the performance of our prior work, by contributing a delay-aware forwarding candidates selection algorithm for providing restricted redundancy of packets on multipath with bounded delay in case of transmission failure. Each node can utilize the evaluated stream DBP (G_DBP) and L_DBP values as well as the deadline information of packets to dynamically define the forwarding candidate set. Simulation results show that for real-time service, it is possible to achieve both reliability and timeliness in the fault recovery process, which consequently avoids dynamic failure and guarantees meeting the end-to-end QoS requirement.

Design and Implementation of MEARN Stack-based Real-time Digital Signage System

  • Most of conventional DSS's(Digital Signage Systems) have been built based on LAMP framework. Recent researches have shown that MEAN or MERN stack framework is simpler, more flexible, faster and more suitable for web-based application than LAMP stack framework. In this paper, we propose a design and implementation of MEARN (ME(A+R)N) stack-based real-time digital signage system, MR-DSS, which supports handing real-time tasks like urgent/instant messaging, system status monitoring and so on, efficiently in addition to conventional digital signage CMS service tasks. MR-DSCMS, CMS of MR-DSS, is designed to provide most of its normal services by REST APIs and real-time services like urgent/instant messaging by Socket.IO base under MEARN stack environment. In addition to architecture description of components composing MR-DSS, design and implementation issues are clarified in more detail. Through experimental testing, it is shown that 1) MR-DSS works functionally well, 2) the networking load performance of MR-DSCMS's REST APIs is better compared to a well-known open source Xibo CMS, and 3) real-time messaging via Socket.IO works much faster than REST APIs.

SVM 모델 기반 가용성 예측 기능을 가진 야외마루 관리 서비스 구현 및 성능 평가 (Implementation and Performance Evaluation of Pavilion Management Service including Availability Prediction based on SVM Model)

  • 본 논문은 숲속 야외 마루의 실시간 이용 현황을 제공할 뿐만 아니라 기계학습을 통한 예측 서비스를 제공하는 야외 마루 관리 서비스의 구현 및 성능 평가 결과를 담고있다. 개발한 하드웨어 프로토타입은 모션 감지 센서를 이용해 야외 마루의 점유 여부를 감지한 후 위치 정보, 날짜 및 시간, 온도 및 습도 데이터와 함께 클라우드 기반 데이터베이스로 전달한다. 수집된 야외 마루의 실시간 이용 현황은 이용자들에게 모바일 애플리케이션을 통해 제공된다. 성능 평가 결과 하드웨어 모듈에서부터 모바일 애플리케이션까지 평균 1.9초의 응답 시간을 보여주었으며, 정확도는 99%를 보여주고 있음을 확인하였다. 아울러 수집 데이터에다 기계학습 기반의 SVM(Support Vector Model) 모델을 적용한 야외 마루의 가용성 예측 서비스를 구현하고서 이를 모바일 및 웹 애플리케이션을 통해 제공할 수 있도록 하였다.

실시간 객체 기반 결함허용 시스템 모델링 (Fault Tolerant System Modeling based on Real-Time Object)

  • 내장 실시간 시스템의 경우 시스템의 오류로 인한 비정상적인 운행이 커다란 경제적 피해나 인명피해를 초래할 수 있으므로 시스템의 고 신뢰도 보장은 필수적이다. 이에 많은 결함허용 방법들이 연구되었는데 이들은 대부분 단위 객체에서 발생하는 오류만 감지하고 단위 객체 수준에서 오류를 처리하는 객체 수준 결함 허용 방법이다. 그런데, 내장 실시간 시스템이 점점 더 복잡해지고 커짐에 따라 객체 수준 결함 허용 방법만으로는 감지하거나 처리할 수 없는 결함과 오류가 존재한다. 따라서, 여러 객체들의 상태에 대한 분석을 통해서 시스템의 상태가 정상인지 비정상인지를 판단하고 오류가 발생했을 때에는 오류의 원인이 되는 결함을 찾은 다음 알맞은 복구 및 재배치 방법을 결정하는 시스템 수준 결함 허용이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 객체 수준 결함 허용 기능을 제공하는 RobustRTO(Robust Real-Time Object)와 시스템 수준 결함 허용 기능을 제공하는 RMO(Region Monitor real-time Object)를 제안하고 이들을 이용하여 객체 수준 결함 허용 기능뿐만 아니라 시스템 수준 결함 허용 기능도 갖는 고 신뢰도의 결함 허용 시스템을 모델링할 수 있음을 보인다. 본 논문은 객체 모델의 장점과 실시간성 표현이 용이한 실시간객체(RTO 또는 Real-Time Object) 모델에 기반한다.

  • 최근 공개키기반구조(Public Key Infrastructure)에 관한 연구가 활발해지면서 클라이언트나 서버의 부하를 줄이고 효율적인 연산이 가능하도록 인증서상태 및 경로검증에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 그러나, 많은 관련 연구에도 불구하고, 인터넷뱅킹과 같이 실시간 처리가 필요한 대규모 클라이언트-서버 환경에서 서버가 수 많은 클라이언트들의 인증서를 동시에 검증할 수 있는 효과적인 메커니즘은 현재까지 거의 전무한 상태이다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 표준 또는 제안된 방법론들이 이러한 대규모 클라이언트-서버 환경에 적합하지 않음을 보이고, 이러한 환경에 적합한 새로운 형태의 인증서상태 및 경로검증 시스템을 제안하고자 한다.

Wireless Packet Scheduling Algorithm for OFDMA System Based on Time-Utility and Channel State

  • In this paper, we propose an urgency- and efficiency-based wireless packet scheduling (UEPS) algorithm that is able to schedule real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) traffics at the same time while supporting multiple users simultaneously at any given scheduling time instant. The UEPS algorithm is designed to support wireless downlink packet scheduling in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system, which is a strong candidate as a wireless access method for the next generation of wireless communications. The UEPS algorithm uses the time-utility function as a scheduling urgency factor and the relative status of the current channel to the average channel status as an efficiency indicator of radio resource usage. The design goal of the UEPS algorithm is to maximize throughput of NRT traffics while satisfying quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of RT traffics. The simulation study shows that the UEPS algorithm is able to give better throughput performance than existing wireless packet scheduling algorithms such as proportional fair (PF) and modified-largest weighted delay first (M-LWDF), while satisfying the QoS requirements of RT traffics such as average delay and packet loss rate under various traffic loads.
