This paper compares and studies scheduling methods to reduce jitter in real-time control systems. While previous research has focused on dynamic-priority scheduling schemes, this paper focuses on fixed-priority scheduling which is more widely used. It is pointed out that previously defined jitter measures might not be useful in enhancing the control performance of a real-time task because the measures are relative values. We present a new jitter measure and a new scheduling scheme for fixed-priority tasks. The experimental results through simulation show that the new scheduling scheme reduces jitter and enhances control performance.

The considerations of the electrical device' characteristics and the customers' satisfaction have been important criteria for efficient smart grid systems. In general, an electrical device is classified into a non-interruptible device or an interruptible device. The consideration of the type is an essential information for the efficient smart grid scheduling. In addition, customers' scheduling preferences or satisfactions have to be considered simultaneously. However, the existing research studies failed to consider both criteria. This paper proposes a new and efficient smart grid scheduling framework considering both criteria. The framework consists of two modules - 1) A day-head smart grid scheduling algorithm and 2) Real-time sudden demand negotiation framework. The first method generates the smart grid schedule efficiently using an embedded genetic algorithm with the consideration of the device's characteristics. Then, in case of sudden electrical demands, the second method generates the more efficient real-time smart grid schedules considering both criteria. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed framework, comparisons with the existing relevant research studies are provided under various electricity demand scenarios.

In this paper, we consider a new packet scheduling algorithm for real-time traffic in the HSDPA system that has been introduced for the WCDMA system, in order to provide high transmission rates. The objective of the design is to meet the maximum tolerable delay and consider channel assignment based on the received SIR for real-time traffic users. The proposed scheduling algorithm shows that the users are ranked by the ratios of the bits in the buffer to the residual time for transmission as priority order; then the ranked users are assigned certain number of channels based on the SIR value table. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide a lower packet drop rate, and satisfy real time quality of service (QoS) requirements.
Many embedded multimedia systems employ special hardware blocks to co-process with the main processor. Even though an efficient handling of such hardware blocks is critical on the overall performance of real-time multimedia systems, traditional real-time scheduling techniques cannot afford to guarantee a high quality of multimedia playbacks with neither delay nor jerking. This paper presents a hardware-aware rate monotonic scheduling (HA-RMS) algorithm to manage hardware tasks efficiently and handle special hardware blocks in the embedded multimedia system. The HA-RMS prioritizes the hardware tasks over software tasks not only to increase the hardware utilization of the system but also to reduce the output jitter of multimedia applications, which results in reducing the overall response time.

Task scheduling is an essential part of any computer system for allocating tasks to a processor of the system among various competitors. As we know, in real-time system, the failure of scheduling a hard real-time task my lead to disastrous consequence. Besides efficiency, resource and speed, real-time system has to take time constraint in serious consideration. This paper proposes a priority-driven scheduling algorithm for real-time multiprocessor system. which is called L-RE coordinates algorithm. L-RE coordinates is a new way of describing the task scheduling problem. In the algorithm, we take both deadline and laxity into consideration for allocating the priority. The simulation result shows that the new algorithm is viable and performance better than EDF and LLF algorithm on schedulability and context switch respectively.
In this paper, we propose an urgency- and efficiency-based wireless packet scheduling (UEPS) algorithm that is able to schedule real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) traffics at the same time while supporting multiple users simultaneously at any given scheduling time instant. The UEPS algorithm is designed to support wireless downlink packet scheduling in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system, which is a strong candidate as a wireless access method for the next generation of wireless communications. The UEPS algorithm uses the time-utility function as a scheduling urgency factor and the relative status of the current channel to the average channel status as an efficiency indicator of radio resource usage. The design goal of the UEPS algorithm is to maximize throughput of NRT traffics while satisfying quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of RT traffics. The simulation study shows that the UEPS algorithm is able to give better throughput performance than existing wireless packet scheduling algorithms such as proportional fair (PF) and modified-largest weighted delay first (M-LWDF), while satisfying the QoS requirements of RT traffics such as average delay and packet loss rate under various traffic loads.
Abstract We propose a dynamic transaction processing model that supports a reliability for distributed real-time processing. For the dynamic processing in distributed real-time transaction systems, we suggest three features that are defined in programming language. First, we propose a specification model to explicitly define the time constraints, needs in real-time distributed processing. Second, we describe an asynchronous transaction processing mechanism based on the real-time characteristics. So, we suggest three communication primitives to support asynchronous transaction processing. Lastly, a scheduling policy based on urgent transaction is suggested to manage the exception occurred during the distributed processing. This scheduling policy is called multi-level priotiry scheduling (MPLS). Based on three features and scheduling policy, we describe a direction to manage a dynamic transaction processing in distributed real-time systems.

The IEEE 802.11 MAC (Media Access Control) Protocol supports two modes of operation, a random access mode for nonreal-time data applications processed by Distributed Coordinated Function (DCF), and a polling mode for real-time applications served by Point Coordinated Function (PCF). It is known that the standard IEEE 802.11 is insufficient to serve real-time traffic. To provide Quality of Service (QoS) of real-time traffic, we propose the Downlink-first scheduling with Earliest Due Date (EDD) in Contention Free Period (CFP) with suitable admission control. The capacity and deadline violation probability of the proposed system is analyzed and compared to the standard pair system of downlink and uplink. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme is remarkably efficient in view of the deadline violation probability.

The OPRoS (Open Platform for Robotic Service) framework provides uniform operating environment for service robots. As an OPRoS-based service robot has to support real-time as well as non-real-time applications, application of Windows NT kernel based operating system can be restrictive. On the other hand, various benefits such as rich library and device support and abundant developer pool can be enjoyed when service robots are built on Windows NT. The paper presents a user-mode component scheduler of OPRoS, which can provide near real-time scheduling service on Windows NT based on the restricted real-time features of Windows NT kernel. The component scheduler thread with the highest real-time priority in Windows NT system acquires CPU control. And then the component scheduler suspends and resumes each periodic component executors based on its priority and precedence dependency so that the component executors are scheduled in the preemptive manner. We show experiment analysis on the performance limitations of the proposed scheduling technique. The analysis and experimental results show that the proposed scheduler guarantees highly reliable timing down to the resolution of 10ms.
The objective of this research is to develop a knowledge acquisition and refinement method for a multi-objective and multi-decision FMS scheduling problem. A competitive neural network and an inductive learning algorithm are integrated to extract and refine necessary scheduling knowledge from simulation outputs. The obtained scheduling knowledge can assist the FMS operator in real-time to decide multiple decisions simultaneously, while maximally meeting multiple objective desired by the FMS operator. The acquired scheduling knowledge for an FMS scheduling problem is tested by comparing the desired and the simulated values of the multiple objectives. The result show that the knowledge acquisition and refinement method is effective for the multi-objective and multi-decision FMS scheduling problems.
