This paper proposes a methodology to estimate the system coefficients for the infinite impulse response(IIR) digital filters using real code GA. In the traditional real coded GA, it adapts the general genetic operations, whereas in this paper the proposed real coded GA applies improved genetic operations in order to search the optimal solution in given problems. Each of unknown IIR digital coefficients collected as forms of a chromosome. Two illustrative examples including the band pass and band stop IIR digital filters are demonstrated to verify the proposed method.
The performance of optimisation methods, based on penalty functions, is highly problem- dependent and many methods require additional tuning of some variables. This additional tuning is the influences of penalty coefficient, which depend strongly on the degree of constraint violation. Moreover, Binary-coded Genetic Algorithm (BGA) meets certain difficulties when dealing with continuous and/or discrete search spaces with large dimensions. With the above reasons, Real-coded Micro-Genetic Algorithm (R$\mu$GA) is proposed to find the global optimum of continuous and/or discrete nonlinear constrained engineering problems without handling any of penalty functions. R$\mu$GA can help in avoiding the premature convergence and search for global solution-spaces, because of its wide spread applicability, global perspective and inherent parallelism. The proposed R$\mu$GA approach has been demonstrated by solving three different engineering design problems. From the simulation results, it has been concluded that R$\mu$GA is an effective global optimisation tool for solving continuous and/or discrete nonlinear constrained realworld optimisation problems.
In this paper, reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) of structures is addressed. For this purpose, the global search and optimization capabilities of genetic algorithm (GA) are combined with the efficiency and reasonable accuracy of an advanced moment-based finite element reliability method. For performing RBDO, three variants of GA including a real-coded, a binary-coded and an improved binary-coded GA are developed. In these methods, GA performs (finite element) reliability analyses to evaluate reliability constraints. For truss structures which include finite element modeling, reliability constraints are evaluated using finite element reliability analysis. Response sensitivity required for finite element reliability analysis is obtained by direct differentiation method (DDM) rather than finite difference method (FDM). The proposed methods are examined within four standard test examples and real-world design problems. The results illustrate the superiority and efficiency of the improved binary-coded GA. Results also illustrate that DDM significantly reduces the computational cost and improves the efficiency of the optimization procedure.

In this study, Real Coded Genetic Algorithm(RCGA) and Artificial Neural Network(ANN) are used for developing the defect diagnostics of the aircraft turbo-shaft engine. ANN accompanied with large amount data has a most serious problem to fall in the local minima. Because of this weak point, it becomes very difficult to obtain good convergence ratio and high accuracy. To solve this problem, GA based ANN has been suggested. GA is able to search the global minima better than ANN. GA based ANN has shown the RMS defect error of 5% less in single and dual defect cases.

We introduce the concept of a bi-population scheme for real-coded GAs consisting of an explorer sub-Ga and an exploiter sub-GA. The explorer sub-GA mainly performs global exploration of the search space, and incorporates a restart mechanism to help avoid being trapped at local optima. The exploiter sub-GA performs exploitation of fit local areas of the search space around the neighborhood of the best-so-far solution. Thus the search function of the algorithm is divided. the proposed technique exhibits performance significantly superior to standard GAs on two complex highly multimodal problems.
The optimum grillage design belongs to nonlinear constrained optimization problem. The determination of beam scantlings for the grillage structure is a very crucial matter out of whole structural design process. The performance of optimization methods, based on penalty functions, is highly problem-dependent and many methods require additional tuning of some variables. This additional tuning is the influences of penalty coefficient, which depend strongly on the degree of constraint violation. Moreover, Binary-coded Genetic Algorithm (BGA) meets certain difficulties when dealing with continuous and/or discrete search spaces with large dimensions. With the above reasons, Real-coded Micro-Genetic Algorithm ($R{\mu}GA$) is proposed to find the optimum beam scantlings of the grillage structure without handling any of penalty functions. $R{\mu}GA$ can help in avoiding the premature convergence and search for global solution-spaces, because of its wide spread applicability, global perspective and inherent parallelism. Direct stiffness method is used as a numerical tool for the grillage analysis. In optimization study to find minimum weight, sensitivity study is carried out with varying beam configurations. From the simulation results, it has been concluded that the proposed $R{\mu}GA$ is an effective optimization tool for solving continuous and/or discrete nonlinear real-world optimization problems.
Purpose: In image segmentation via thresholding, Otsu and Kapur methods have been widely used because of their effectiveness and robustness. However, computational complexity of these methods grows exponentially as the number of thresholds increases due to the exhaustive search characteristics. Methods: Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithms (GAs) can accelerate the computation. Both methods, however, also have some drawbacks including slow convergence and ease of being trapped in a local optimum instead of a global optimum. To overcome these difficulties, we proposed two new multi-level thresholding methods based on Bacteria Foraging PSO (BFPSO) and real-coded GA algorithms for fast segmentation. Results: The results from BFPSO and real-coded GA methods were compared with each other and also compared with the results obtained from the Otsu and Kapur methods. Conclusions: The proposed methods were computationally efficient and showed the excellent accuracy and stability. Results of the proposed methods were demonstrated using four real images.
The current type amplifier is the device that is used for an actuator as the motor's torque controller. However, it is too difficult to select the parameter value that has the desired output because the current type amplifier's transfer function is too complex. This study concern about the design of the current type amplifier with the desired output. From the modeled transfer function of the current type amplifier, the optimal parameter values of the transfer function can be selected in order to have the desired output using the Real Coded Genetic Algorithm(RCGA). The real circuit is made with the selected parameter value. The step response of the real circuit is in good agreement with the desired step response.
In this paper, we propose a "Distance Correlation Selection operator (DCS)" as a new selection operator. For Genetic Algorithm (GA), many improvements have been proposed. The MGG (Minimal Generation Gap) model proposed by Satoh et.al. shows good performance. The MGG model has all advantages of conventional models and the ability of avoiding the premature convergence and suppressing the evolutionary stagnation. The proposed method is an extension of selection operator in the original MGG model. Generally, GA has two types of selection operators, one is "selection for reproduction", and the other is "selection for survival"; the former is for crossover and the latter is the individuals which survive to the next generation. The proposed method is an extension of the former. The proposed method utilizes distance information between individuals. From this extension, the proposed method aims to expand a search area and improve ability to search solution. The performance of the proposed method is examined with several standard test functions. The experimental results show good performance better than the original MGG model.

This paper proposes a method that minimizes the consumed energy by searching the optimal locations of the mass centers of links composing of a biped robot using Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm. Generally, in order to utilize optimization algorithms, the system model and design variables must be defined. Firstly, the proposed model is a 6-DOF biped robot composed of seven links, since many of the essential characteristics of the human walking motion can be captured with a seven-link planar biped walking in the saggital plane. Next, Fourth order polynomials are used for basis functions to approximate the walking gait. The coefficients of the fourth order polynomials are defined as design variables. In order to use the method generating the optimal gait trajectory by searching the locations of mass centers of links, three variables are added to the total number of design variables. Real-Coded GA is used for optimization algorithm by reason of many advantages. Simulations and the comparison of three methods to generate gait trajectories including the GCIPM were performed. They show that the proposed method can decrease the consumed energy remarkably and be applied during the design phase of a robot actually.
