  • This paper treats the modelling and the control of the burnthrough point control system for an industrial sintering process. First, a state-space model is derived by defining new unconventional variables. A simple control law is proposed, which consists of the modified receding horizon control law and the least-squares prediction algorithm. The stability and the tracking properties of this control law are proved. The real-time experiments are carried out in a POSCO sintering plant and satisfactory results are presented in this paper. Before the real-time experiments, computer simulations are done and their results are also given for the comparison with the real-time experiments.

  • The most important factor in students' growth and development is the teacher. Therefore in-service science teacher education to develop the professionality is important as well as the selection of new excellence teachers. Our research is on the development and application of new education program on science experiments where in-service teachers become the lecturers in the program and provide information that is bound to the context of real lessons. This program is consisted of following 10 steps of work, which was implemented in 5 months: sharing the philosophy of the program, selecting science experiments, first application of the experiments, discussion on the first application, learning how to edit the movie clips of the lesson, second application of the experiments, in depth discussion on the second application, developing the experiment package, giving lecture to other science teachers, and evaluating the program. We describe the process of the program developed and implemented in detail to suggest a model of science teacher education program on science experiments and discuss educational implications. This program is characterized by the emphasis of the context closely linked to the real lessons, the problem solving in a real situation, and the collaboration of teachers, professors and science education researcher in a teacher education.

  • In order to reduce enormous cost of real-scale underwater explosion experiments on ships, the mechanical response of the ships have been analyzed by combining scaled-down experiments and Hopkinson's scaling law. However, the Hopkinson's scaling law is applicable only if all variables vary in an identical ratio; for example, thickness of ship, size of explosive, and distance between the explosive and the ship should vary with same ratio. Unfortunately, it is infeasible to meet such uniform scaling requirement because of environmental conditions and limitations in manufacturing scaled model systems. For the facile application of the scaling analysis, we propose a generalized scaling law that is applicable for non-uniform scaling cases in which different parts of the experiments are scaled in different ratios compared to the real-scale experiments. In order to establish such a generalized scaling law, we conducted a parametric study based on numerical simulations, and validated it with experiments and simulations. This study confirms that the initial peak value of response variables in a real-scale experiment can be predicted even when we perform a scaled experiment composed of different scaling ratios for each experimental variable.

  • Fieldbuses are used as the lowest level communication network for real-time communication in factory automation and process control systems. Data generated from field devices can be divided into three categories: sporadic real-time, periodic real-time and non real-time data. Since these data share one fieldbus network medium, it needs a method that allocate the limited bandwidth of fieldbus network to the sporadic real-time, periodic real-time and non real-time traffic. This paper introduces an implementation method of bandwidth allocation scheme introduced in [51 on PROFIBUS. Using the modified PROFIBUS FDL(Fieldbus Data Link layer), the bandwidth allocation scheme introduced in [51 is verified by the experiments.

  • This paper proposes a method to estimate the flow speed of pedestrians in surveillance videos. In the proposed method, the average moving speed of pedestrians is measured by estimating the size of real-world motion from the observed motion vectors. For this purpose, pixel-to-meter conversion factors are calculated from camera geometry. Also, the height information, which is missing because of camera projection, is predicted statistically from simulation experiments. Compared to the previous works for flow speed estimation, our method can be applied to various camera views because it separates scene parameters explicitly. Experiments are performed on both simulation image sequences and real video. In the experiments on simulation videos, the proposed method estimated the flow speed with average error of about 0.1m/s. The proposed method also showed a promising result for the real video.

  • For the safety driving of an automobile which is become individual requisites, a new Neural Network algorithm which recognized the load vehicles in real time is proposed. The proposed neural network technique is the real time computation method through the inter-node diffusion. In the network, a node corresponds to a state in the quantized input space. Each node is composed of a processing unit and fixed weights from its neighbor nodes as well as its input terminal. The most reliable algorithm derived for real time recognition of vehicles, is a dynamic programming based algorithm based on sequence matching techniques that would process the data as it arrives and could therefore provide continuously updated neighbor information estimates. Through several simulation experiments, real time reconstruction of the nonlinear image information is processed. 1-D LIPN hardware has been composed and various experiments with static and dynamic signals have been implemented.

  • To investigate the flexural behavior of real size RC beams strengthened with glass fiber sheets, 9 strengthened beams of real size are experimented and the results are compared with those of existing experimental studies. Experiments are considered glass fiber sheets, the number of fiber sheets, and the existence of U-wrap. By the results of experiments, the failure behavior and crack types of real size RC beams are almost equal to those of the small size RC beams, and the debonding and not the concrete cover delamination are occurred. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the ductility of real size RC beam is more decreased than that of the small size RC beam. For the strengthening method with glass fiber sheets of the real size RC beams, it can be confirmed that the finding a solution to the bonding problem is required

  • Real automobiles have been utilized to study the occupant behaviors and the response of the structures in the crash environment. Since various parameters are involved in the automobile crashworthiness, a number of experiments must be conducted. The experiments have been contributed to increasing the cost due to the fact that the test is quite expensive. Therefore, computer simulation is adopted to reduce the number of experiments. A few computer programs have been developed specifically to solve the occupant responses in the crash environment. In this research, a software is used to study the occupant dynamic analysis. A modeling of occupant analysis is established for a passenger car and the results are verified through comparisons with real experiments. In the modeling, data are tuned very carefully so that simulated results such as HIC(Head Injury Criterion) and acceleration of each body may approximate to the experimental results. The compared experiment is a barrier test which is carried out by frontal impact. A feedback to the design process is suggested from the result of this research.

  • In engineering education practical experiments is very important for each student, but due to the limitation of time and available resources such as laboratory equipment, space and instructors enough hands-on real experiments could not be provided to all students enrolled in the program throughout the academic year. In this sense web-based remote experiments through internet become a solution for engineering education and an emerging new paradigm for students and teachers. This paper presents the development of the web-based remote vibration experiment system for mechatronics education. Students can access this experimental equipment through an internet and conduct vibration experiment remotely without any restriction on time and place. IP address for data communication and web-service are assigned in local computer and then students receive experimental results and the captured pictures using network. The developed system provides real-time feedback of the tested results. Ubiquitous access to the system gained popularity from students.
