  • The aim of this study was to analyze word frequency effects on eye fixation duration in Korean reading with a one-boundary diffusion model and to show how these phenomena differ between adults (20-28yrs) and adolescents (13-14yrs). We predicted that the drift rate parameter in the boundary diffusion model would reflect the information processing of the fovea during silent reading. Through an eye movement tracking experiment while controlling word properties such as the word frequency and the age of acquisition, Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 show that the information processing pertaining to words to be placed in the fovea is connected to the drift rate of the one-boundary diffusion model parameters. In Experiment 1,in the adult group, the mean difference in the fixation time in the response proportion between the presence of high-frequency condition and low-frequency condition in the adult group was higher in quantile 0.9 than it was in the 0.1 quantile, but in the adolescent group, the mean difference in the fixation time in the response proportion between the two conditions was not significantly in the 0.9 quartile. In Experiment 2, the mean difference in the fixation time in the response proportion between early-acquired condition and late-acquired condition in both groups was also higher in the quantile 0.9 than in the 0.1 quantile. The distribution of the two conditions in the both groups was positively skewed, and the difference showed the same pattern found in the results of Ratcliff(Ratcliff & McKoon, 2008). Based on the experimental results, we propose one-boundary diffusion model as a tool to explain word property effects and individual differences in reading. In particular, we suggest that the drift rate parameter in the boundary diffusion model reflects the information processing of the fovea during reading. In addition, the results show that one-boundary diffusion model can be used to predict the aforementioned phenomena in reading.

  • Recently many efforts on the development of automatic processing system for delivery sequence sorting have been performed in ETRI, which requires the use of postal4-state bar code system to encode delivery points. The 4-state bar code called postal 4-state barcode for high speed processing that has been specifically designed for information processing of logistics and automatic processing of he mail items. The Information of 4-state bar code indicates mail data such as post code, delivery sequence number, error correction code worked, customer information, and a unique ID. This appear addresses the issue on he reduction of reading error in postal 4-state raster beam based bar code reader. The raster beam scanning features are the unequally distributed number of spots per each unit, which cause reading errors. We propose a method for reducing the bar code reading error by adjusting measured values of bar code width to its average value over each interval. The test results show that the above method reduces the average reading error rate approximately by 99.88%.

  • The present study investigated the perceptual span(or the span of effective vision) of junior-high school students during reading Korean, using the material and the moving-window display change technique used in Choi & Koh(2009). The 8 different window sizes were used in the experiment. They were 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 characters in size and the whole line. Reading rate, number of fixation, saccadic distance, fixation duration were compared between each window-size condition and the whole line condition. Considering the pattern of eye-movement measures above, the size of the perceptual span of junior-high school students in Korean reading may be estimated to be 9 characters, that is 4 characters to the right and 1 characters to the left of the fixation.

  • The authors studied to evaluate the difference of the diagnostic performance between reading from digital image on the video CRT of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and from analogue image of conventional film mode. We compared interpretative accuracy of above two reading modes by having two observers read a series of liver scintigrams. Images were read once from film and a second time from video CRT of elementary PACS. The concordance rate of interpretation of the two modes was in the range from 61.0% to 93.2%. The diagnostic accuracies of digital image reading and analogue image reading were 72.9% and 74.6% respectively in one observer, and 72.9% and 76.3% in another one. No significant difference in interpretative accuracy could be found between two modes of reading.

  • Due to speech recognition problems in noisy environment, Audio Visual Speech Recognition (AVSR) system, which combines speech information and visual information, has been proposed since the mid-1990s,. and lip reading have played significant role in the AVSR System. This study aims to enhance recognition rate of utterance word using only lip shape detection for efficient AVSR system. After preprocessing for lip region detection, Convolution Neural Network (CNN) techniques are applied for utterance period detection and lip shape feature vector extraction, and Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are then used for the recognition. As a result, the utterance period detection results show 91% of success rates, which are higher performance than general threshold methods. In the lip reading recognition, while user-dependent experiment records 88.5%, user-independent experiment shows 80.2% of recognition rates, which are improved results compared to the previous studies.

  • To find diagnosing method of nitrogen status in tomato plant for determining optimum application rate of side dress, chlorophyll reading values were measured by portable chlorophyll meter(SPAD 502, Minolta), and compared with nitrogen supplying capability of soils. Regression between dry weight, amount of nitrogen uptake, and chlorophyll reading at stalk positions of tomato grown on the condition of no fertilization were evaluated For 6 green house soils with different nitrate concentrations ranged from $55mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $306mg\;kg^{-1}$. The chlorophyll reading of tomato leave was significantly correlated with amount of nitrogen per unit area of leave suggesting that chlorophyll content is useful for nitrogen diagnosis of tomato plant. The chlorophyll reading showed peak at the 15th leaf of stalk position on the 45th days after transplanting and this suggested that below or near the 15th leaf and before or near the 45th days after transplanting is the critical stalk position and time for diagnosing nitrogen status of tomato by chlorophyll test. The chlorophyll reading at the 14th leaf on the 40th days after transplanting was significantly correlated with soil nitrate status, dry weight and amount of nitrogen uptake by tomato grown with no fertilization. From the above correlation, the chlorophyll reading value of 57.1 at the 14th leaf of tomato was estimated as the critical level for maximum dry weight and amount of nitrogen uptake by tomato grown with no fertilization. Consequently, chlorophyll reading of tomato leaves measured by portable chlorophyll meter was thought to be available as a rapid plant test for predicting the nitrogen supplying capability of green house soils.

  • Objective: To evaluate whether artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting breast cancer on mammography can improve the performance and time efficiency of radiologists reading mammograms. Materials and Methods: A commercial deep learning-based software for mammography was validated using external data collected from 200 patients, 100 each with and without breast cancer (40 with benign lesions and 60 without lesions) from one hospital. Ten readers, including five breast specialist radiologists (BSRs) and five general radiologists (GRs), assessed all mammography images using a seven-point scale to rate the likelihood of malignancy in two sessions, with and without the aid of the AI-based software, and the reading time was automatically recorded using a web-based reporting system. Two reading sessions were conducted with a two-month washout period in between. Differences in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), sensitivity, specificity, and reading time between reading with and without AI were analyzed, accounting for data clustering by readers when indicated. Results: The AUROC of the AI alone, BSR (average across five readers), and GR (average across five readers) groups was 0.915 (95% confidence interval, 0.876-0.954), 0.813 (0.756-0.870), and 0.684 (0.616-0.752), respectively. With AI assistance, the AUROC significantly increased to 0.884 (0.840-0.928) and 0.833 (0.779-0.887) in the BSR and GR groups, respectively (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001, respectively). Sensitivity was improved by AI assistance in both groups (74.6% vs. 88.6% in BSR, p < 0.001; 52.1% vs. 79.4% in GR, p < 0.001), but the specificity did not differ significantly (66.6% vs. 66.4% in BSR, p = 0.238; 70.8% vs. 70.0% in GR, p = 0.689). The average reading time pooled across readers was significantly decreased by AI assistance for BSRs (82.73 vs. 73.04 seconds, p < 0.001) but increased in GRs (35.44 vs. 42.52 seconds, p < 0.001). Conclusion: AI-based software improved the performance of radiologists regardless of their experience and affected the reading time.
