Geographical Metacognition in the Reading Maps Inquiry Activity (중학생의 '지도 읽기' 탐구활동에서 나타나는 지리적 메타인지)

  • Since the 1980's, metacognition has been one of the core subjects in the studies on teaching-learning. There have been significant considerations about the metacognition in the reaching-learning become increasingly important in relation with learner's thinking. Though, metacognition has now become important concept used in learning process, there have not been sufficient researches in geographic education. The purpose of this parer is to define metacognition concept in geograpbic education. First, the concept of metacognition in geograpbic education, alike in the other education, can be classified as metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive function. Metacognitive knowledge can be categorized as knowledge about self, task, and strategy. Metacognitive function can be categorized as function about monitoring, evaluating and controling. Next, based on geographical metacognition concept, this paper is researched the characteristics of geographical metacognition in the students' reading maps inquiry activity.

A Study on the Feature Extraction of Maps using Mechanism of Optical Neural Field (시각정보처리 개념을 이용한 지형도의 특징추출에 관한 연구)

  • Maps are one of the most complicated types of drawings. Drawing recognition technology is not yet sophisticated enough for automated map reading. To automatically extract a road map directly form more complicated topographical maps, a very complicated algorithm is needed, simce the image generally involves such complicated patterns as symbols, characters, residential sections, rivers,etc. This paper describes a new feature extraction method based on the human optical neural field. We apply this method to extract complete set of road segments from topographical maps. The proposed method successfully extract road segments from various areas.

  • This study examined the effects of a geographic experiential activity program on the ability to represent and to read maps(directions, perspectives, and symbols). The subjects were 44 5-year-old kindergarten children assigned to an experimental or a control group, with 22 children in each group. The geographic experiential activity program was developed and applied to the experimental group for 4 weeks. Results indicated that the experimental group was higher in reading and representing maps than the control group. Through the geographic experiential activity program, children came to be concerned about their living space, to be able to read and comprehend a simple map, and to represent a basic map with the use of directions, perspectives, and symbols.

On Franco Moretti's World Literature: Seen from the Perspective of Periodical Studies (프랑코 모레티의 세계문학론 비판 - 매체론의 관점에서 -)

  • The works of a literary and cultural historian Franco Moretti are conspicuous in many ways. Trained in Marxism and Russian formalism, he participated in the construction of the New Left in England. Also, he interestingly interpreted the socialization of the individual through the genre of bildungsroman. Then, he shifted his research interest to the notion of world literature, and to explore its global scale, he developed his own quantitative approach combined with advanced computer technology in digital humanities. His recent publication reveals that Moretti conducted a social critique of the European bourgeois culture with his new quantitative method. His macroscopic view of literature and use of cutting-edge technology in his research inspire historians of Korean literature located in the so-called periphery of world literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the idea of world literature outlined by Franco Moretti by reviewing his method called "distant reading" and examples of such an approach. His distant reading is to construct a macroscopic archive through inclusion of forgotten works from literary history and to analyze morphological patterns that frequently appear in the archive. His book entitled Graphs, Maps, Trees is a collection of examples of which he applied distant reading. By delving into such cases, I will raise questions about Moretti's macroscopic perspective of world literature in conjunction with Korean literature. As located at the periphery of global circulation of literary knowledge, Korea appropriated Western genres, established its literary institutions, and developed book markets through modern newspapers and magazines. This experience of furthering modern literature through periodicals would provide another view to revisit Moretti's world literature.

A Study on the Current Status and Utilization of Old Map in Library and Museums in Korea (국내 도서관·박물관 소장 고지도의 현황 및 활용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to increase access to information on old maps and to discuss efficient ways to utilize old maps, such as providing services and information using old maps. To this end, the information search system of domestic institutions that provide old map information was investigated, and methods of searching for old map data and accessing information were searched on the website. In addition, the current status of the collection of old maps in domestic libraries and museums was analyzed by referring to the homepage, book, research book, and publication of each institution. As a result of the analysis, about 2,200 old maps were housed in 76 institutions, including national, public, and university libraries and museums nationwide. Each institution in the collection of old maps was carrying out publication business, such as publication of English manuscripts, exhibitions and books, publication of research document edits such as lists and summaries. However, reading and using of original documents are limited due to the rare nature of old maps and the data characteristics of the only one. In order to effectively utilize old maps, first, it is necessary to improve access to old map information services and expand academic information services. Second, it is proposed to use old maps as data for archival construction that reflects the identity of the region. Third, it is necessary to cultivate professional manpower who selects and provides information based on knowledge of old map data and humanities literacy.

A Functional MR Imaging Study of Reading (읽기의 기능적 자기공명영상에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose : To evaluate the language areas activated by fMRI during different reading tasks and to assess the difference of activated areas according to each reading task. Materials and Methods : Functional maps of the language area were obtained during three reading tasks(Korean consonant letter, pseudoword, and word) in nine right-handed volunteers(7 males 2 females). MR examinations were performed at 1.5T scanner with EPI BOLD technique(gradient echo shot EPI, TR/TE 3000/60, flip angle $90^{\circ}$, matrix $64{\times}64$, 5mm thickness, no slice gap). Each task consisted of three resting periods and two activation periods and each period lasted 30 seconds. We used SPM program for the postprocessing of images and signification level was set at p<0.01. Activated areas were topographically analyzed in each stimulus. Results : Significant activated signals were demonstrated in all volunteers. Activated signals were seen in the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes during reading tasks and they were lateralized to the left hemisphere except occipital lobe. Letter and pseudoword produced stronger activated signals than word, and the activated signals were more lateralized to the left hemisphere in pseudoword reading than in letter reading. Conclusion : Activated signals were induced in the language areas by reading task of letter or wordform. Greater activation of language areas was induced when letter or pseudowords were presented than familiar words.

  • Computerized map reading system is one of the most important application areas in the image processing.A map databaes can be used for a wide range of scial activities such as narural resource assessment,regional plan-ming,and reaffic nabigation system. The road segments,however,are extracted as briken in the area where they are overlapped and interupted by chracters and symbols.Few approaches have been taken to complete road segnents interupted by map symbols.In this paper,a movel approach for the extracation and completion of road segements interupted by map symbols is proposed using neural networks.The system is applied to 1/25,000 scaled maps published by the Grographical Survey Unstitute of Ministry of Construction of Korea.It will be shown that the system can extract and reconstruct road segmetns for the various areas of maps sucessfully.

Efficient Hausdorff Distance Computation for Planar Curves (평면곡선에 대한 Hausdorff 거리 계산의 가속화 기법에 대한 연구)

  • We present an efficient algorithm for computing the Hausdorff distance between two planar curves. The algorithm is based on an efficient trimming technique that eliminates the curve domains that make no contribution to the final Hausdorff distance. The input curves are first approximated with biarcs within a given error bound in a pre-processing step. Using the biarc approximation, the distance map of an input curve is then approximated and stored into the graphics hardware depth-buffer by rendering the distance maps (represented as circular cones) of the biarcs. We repeat the same procedure for the other input curve. By sampling points on each input curve and reading the distance from the other curve (stored in the hardware depth-buffer), we can easily estimate a lower bound of the Hausdorff distance. Based on the lower bound, the algorithm eliminates redundant curve segments where the exact Hausdorff distance can never be obtained. Finally, we employ a multivariate equation solver to compute the Hausdorff distance efficiently using the remaining curve segments only.
