탄화규소의 활성화소결 (Reactive Sintering of SiC)

  • There has been many controversies about the effects of additive in sintering of SiC But no prior systematic work has been reported about the difference between the effects of B and $B_4C$ as additive. The sintering behavior of SiC and its strength are studied and the optimum concentrations of additives and sintering conditions for SiC are determined. The effects of B and $B_4C$ have same effects on reactive sintering of SiC except the easiness of transport via vapor phase for uniform distribution in case of B. The strength of sintered SiC without exaggerated grain growth is limited by surface flaws and is nearly independent of temperature up to 140$0^{\circ}C$.

반응소결법에 의해 제조된 Fe-Al합금 예비성형체의 특성에 미치는 제인자의 영향 (Effects of Several Factors on the Characteristics of Fe-Al Alloy Preform Manufactured by Reactive Sintering Process)

  • The main aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of several processing parameters on the characteristics of Fe-Al alloy preform manufactured by reactive sintering process. The processing parameters include preform composition of 25, 40, 50, 60 and 75at.%Al, compacting pressure of 10, 20 and $30kg/cm^2$, and mean Al particle size of 29, 66 and $187{\mu}m$. Mean Fe particle size was $39{\mu}m$. The density of preform processed under same compacting pressure was not affected by changing Al composition. The preform with Al compositions of 25, 40, 50 and 60at.% Al swelled after reactive sintering process, thus having lower density than the green compacts. The preform with Al compositions of 75at.%Al, however, shrinked after reactive sintering process, thus having higher density than the green compacts. Ignition temperature increased with increasing compacting pressure, and increased with increasing Al composition at the fixed compacting pressure. And adiabatic temperature decreased with increasing compacting pressure at the fixed Al composition, and increased with increasing Al composition at the fixed compacting pressure. The size of compound particles increased with increasing Al composition. Especially, The size of compound particles increased largely in the case of 75at.%Al. It was observed that 50at.%Al preform have three dimentional network structure having a homogeneous and fine decreasing Al particle size.

반응소결법 및 통전가압소결법에 의한 $Ti_5Si_3$계 금속간화합물의 합성 및 치밀화 (Synthesis and Densification of $Ti_5Si_3$-base Intermetallic Compounds by Reactive Sintering and Electro-Pressure Sintering)

  • $Ti_5Si_3$ intermetallics containing 0-6 wt% of Cu were made by reactive sintering (RS) under vacuum using elemental powder mixtures (Process 1), electro-pressure sintering (EPS) using RS'ed materials (Process2), and EPS using elemental powder mixtures (Process 3). Relatively low dense titanium silicides were gained by process 1, in which porosity decreased with increasing Cu content. For example, porosity changed from 42 to 19.4% with the increase in Cu content from 0 to 6 wt%, indicating that Cu is a useful sintering aid. The titanium silicides fabricated by Process 2 had a higher density than those by Process 1 at given composition, and porosity decreased with increasing Cu content. For example, porosity decreased from 38 to 6.8% with the change in Cu content from 0 to 6 wt%. A high dense titanium silicides were obtained by Process 3. In this Process, porosity decreased a little by Cu addition, and was almost insensitive to Cu content. Namely, about 9 or 7% of porosity was shown in 0 or 1-6 wt% Cu containing silicides, respectively. The hardeness increased by Cu addition, and was not changed markedly with Cu content for the silicides fabricated by Process 3. This tendency was considered to be resulted from porosity, hardening of grain interior by Cu addition, and softening of grain boundary by Cu-base segregates. All these results suggested that EPS using elemental powder mixtures (Process 3) is an effective processing method to achieve satisfactorily dense titanium silicides.

초기 소재와 소성조건이 투수반응벽체인 대공극흡착제 조상에 미치는 영향 (Influence of the Starting Materials and Sintering Conditions on Composition of a Macroporous Adsorbent as Permeable Reactive Barrier)

  • 본 실험은 지하수에 포함된 중금속을 제거하기 위한 투수성반응벽체를 개발하기 위하여 대공극 형성물질로 분쇄한 폐지와 식물섬유를 그리고 구조형성소재로 Na와 Ca-벤토나이트를 사용하여 소성 후 소성된 소재의 표면 구조와 공극발달 특성을 조사하였다. 그러나 소성은 중금속 제거율을 급격히 감소시키는 양이온교환용량에 영향을 미치므로 2:1 점토광물 중에서 양이온교환용량이 큰 점토광물과 일반 산업물질을 소재를 선정하였다. 연구 결과는 살펴보면 소성온도가 증가함에 따라 소성에 사용된 소재의 기존 CEC의 10 % 이하로 급격히 감소되는 경향을 보여주었다. 일축 압축 시험 결과 처리간 용적밀도는 큰 차이가 없었지만 Na와 Ca-벤토나이트를 소성소재 모두 폐지가 5 % 정도 처리하였을 때 압축강도가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 소성온도와 기간 모두 공극 형성에 영향을 미친 것으로 조사되었다. 이러한 연구 결과로부터 다공체 내에 형성된 공극은 수분 투수 특성과 중금속 제거에 모두 영향을 미칠 것이라 추정하였다.

Sintering of Alloyed $Ni_3Al$ Starting from Mechano-composites Powders

  • Considering the idea that some properties, especially the mechanical properties of $Ni_3Al$ at ambient temperature can be improved by adding of some substitutional/interstitial elements, our goal was to obtain these materials starting from mechano-composites powders. In this aim, using mechanical alloying techniques three type of mechano-composite powders starting from elemental powders were obtained. Then, by reactive sintering in argon atmosphere at temperature over $900^{\circ}C$, alloyed $Ni_3Al$ materials were realized. This paper presents our research results regarding the microstructural aspects and phase formation in obtained materials.

Reactive Synthesis of ZrB2-based Ultra High Temperature Ceramics

  • Reactive processing, such as reactive hot pressing (RHP) and reactive spark plasma sintering (R-SPS), is effective densification method to prepare $ZrB_2$-based ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). The present paper reviewed some typical reactive processing of $ZrB_2$-based UHTCs. All the reactions from the starting materials in the reactive processing are thermodynamically favorable, which generate enough energy and driving force for the densification of the final products under a relatively low temperature. Besides, compared with non-reactive processing, anisotropic $ZrB_2$ grains, such as $ZrB_2$ platelets, can only be obtained in the reactive processing, resulting in an improvement of the mechanical properties.

  • The present work studies the influence of high-energy milling (HEM) and sintering cycle of Ti and Al powders on the obtainment of TiAl. This study shows that HEM modifies the diffusion processes during the sintering stage. The samples were obtained by cold uniaxial and isostatic pressing, pre-sintered at different temperatures, and heated up to the sintering temperature. This study also shows the effect of powder additions processed by HEM on the sintering behavior of elemental Ti and Al powders.

반응소결법에 의해 엔진밸브 형상으로 제조한 TiAl-Mn 금속간화합물의 특성 (Processing and Properties of Engine Valve-shaped TiAl-Mn Intermetallics by Reactive Sintering)

  • Engine valve-shaped TiAl-Mn intermetallics containing 43.5 to 47.5at%Al (Mn/Al=0.036) are successively fabricated by reactive sintering the elemental powder mixtures near-net shaped by extrusion and die forging. A duplex structure consisted of lamellar grains and equiaxed $\gamma$ grains is developed for all compositions, and the areal fraction of the lamellar grains(or equiaxed $\gamma$ grains) decreases (or increases) with increasing Al content. As Al content increased, the elongation increases with accompanying decrease in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength at both room temperature and 80$0^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the suitable composition is Ti-45at%Al-1.6at%Mn in considering the balance of ambient and elevated tensile properties. The reactive-sintered Ti-45Al-1.6Mn alloy shows superior oxidation resistance not only to the plasma arc melted one but also to the heat resistance steel STR35(representative exhaust valve head material for automotive engine). The reactive-sintered Ti-45Al-1.6Mn alloy coated with an oxidizing scale exhibits a better wear resistance than induction hardened martensitic steel STR11(representative exhaust valve tip material for automotive engine).

가스압 반응소결로 제조된 SiAlON 세라믹스의 상형성과 물리적 특성 (Phase Formation and Physical Properties of SiAlON Ceramics Fabricated by Gas-Pressure Reactive Sintering)

  • SiAlON-based ceramics are some of the most typical oxynitride ceramic materials, which can be used as cutting tools for heat-resistant super-alloys (HRSA). SiAlON can be fabricated by using gas-pressure reactive sintering from the raw materials, nitrides and oxides such as $Si_3N_4$, AlN, $Al_2O_3$, and $Yb_2O_3$. In this study, we fabricate $Yb_{m/3}Si_{12-(m+n)}Al_{m+n}O_nN_{16-n}$ (m=0.3, n=1.9, 2.3, 2.7) ceramics by using gas-pressure sintering at different sintering temperatures. Then, the densification behavior, phase formation, microstructure, and hardness of the sintered specimens are characterized. We obtain a fully densified specimen with ${\beta}$-SiAlON after gas-pressure sintering at $1820^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. under 10 atm $N_2$ pressure. These SiAlON ceramic materials exhibited hardness values of ~92.9 HRA. The potential of these SiAlON ceramics for cutting tool application is also discussed.

  • Rapid prototyping is becoming an increasingly importnat techniuqe involved in the design cycles of modern industry. The majority of the rapid prototyping systems currently available use photo-reactive resins and waxes as the raw materials. The models produced by these systems often have relatively poor mechanical and physical properties and as such have a limited application to the production of advance prototypes but are excellently suited to the manufacture of engineering prototyes. This work identifies the need to produed near production grade advance prototypes from a variety of metals and a novel prototyping process based on the techniques of selective laser sintering and conventional machining is proposed. The integration of a carbon dioxide laser and a conventional machine tool to create the opto-mechanical by multi-layer sintering and some of the problems involved are also discussed.
