  • The reaction kinetics of the growth of Ni germanide in the Ni/Zr-interlayer/Ge system was investigated using isothermal in situ annealing at three different temperatures in a transmission electron microscope. The growth rate of Ni germanide in the Ni/Zr-interlayer/Ge system was determined to be diffusion controlled and depended on the square root of the time, with the activation energy of $1.04P{\pm}0.04eV$. For the Ni/Zr-interlayer/Ge system, no intermediate or intermixing layer between the Zr-interlayer and Ge substrate was formed, and thus the Ni germanide was formed and grew uniformly due to Ni diffusion through the diffusion path created in the amorphous Zr-interlayer during the annealing process in the absence of any intermetallic compounds. The reaction kinetics in the Ni/Zr-interlayer/Ge system was affected only by the Zr-interlayer.

  • The cure kinetics of the epoxy-layered, silicate nanocomposites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry under isothermal and dynamic conditions. The materials used in this study were o-cresol novolac epoxy resin and phenol novolac hardener, with organically modified layered silicates. Various kinetic parameters, including the reaction order, activation energy, and kinetic rate constants, were investigated, and the storage stability of the epoxy-layered silicate nanocomposites was measured. To synthesize the epoxy-layered silicate nanocomposites, the phenolic hardener underwent pre-intercalation by layered silicate. From the cure kinetics analyses, the organically modified layered silicate decreased the activation energy during cure reaction in the epoxy/phenolic hardener system. In addition, the storage stability of the nanocomposite with the pre-intercalated phenolic hardener was significantly increased compared to that of the nanocomposite with direct mixing of epoxy, phenolic hardener, and layered silicate. This was due to the protective effect of the reaction between onium ions and epoxide groups.

  • The phase distribution and interface chemistry by the solid-state reaction between SiC and nickel were studied at temperatures between $550 \;and\; 1250^{\circ}C$ for 0.5-100 h. The reaction with the formation of silicides and carbon was first observed above $650^{\circ}C$. At $750^{\circ}C$, as the reaction proceeded, the initially, formed $Ni_3Si_2$ layer was converted to $Ni_2$Si. The thin nickel film reacted completely with SiC after annealing at $950^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The thermodynamically stable $Ni_2$Si is the only obsrved silicide in the reaction zone up to $1050^{\circ}C$. The formation of $Ni_2$Si layers with carbon precipitates alternated periodically with the carbon free layers. At temperatures between $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$, the typical layer sequences in the reaction zone is determined by quantitative microanalysis to be $SiC/Ni_2$$Si+C/Ni_2$$Si/Ni_2$$Si+C/…Ni_2$Si/Ni(Si)/Ni. The mechanism of the periodic band structure formation with the carbon precipitation behaviour was discussed in terms of reaction kinetics and thermodynamic considerations. The reaction kinetics is proposed to estimate the effective reaction constant from the parabolic growth of the reaction zone.

  • A comprehensive kinetic study has been conducted on dimethyl carbonate synthesis by transesterification reaction of ethylene carbonate with methanol. An alkali base metal (KOH) was used as catalyst in the synthesis of DMC, and its catalytic ability was investigated in terms of kinetics. The experiment was performed in a batch reactor at atmospheric pressure. The reaction orders, the activation energy and the rate constants were determined for both forward and backward reactions. The reaction order for forward and backward reactions was 0.87 and 2.15, and the activation energy was 12.73 and 29.28 kJ/mol, respectively. Using the general factor analysis in the design of experiments, we analyzed the main effects and interactions according to the MeOH/EC, reaction temperature and KOH concentration. DMC yield with various reaction conditions was presented for all ranges using surface and contour plot. Furthermore, the optimal conditions for DMC yield were determined using response surface method.

  • The kinetics of the direct synthesis of DME was studied under different conditions over a temperature range of $220\~280^{\circ}C$, syngas ratio $1.2\~ 3.0$ All experiment were carried out over hybrid catalyst, composed to a methanol synthesis catalyst (Cu/ZnO/$Al_2O_3$) and a dehydration Catalyst ($\gamma$-Al_2O_3$) The observed reaction rate qualitatively follows a Langmiur-Hinshellwood type of reaction mechanism. Such a mechanism is considered with three reaction, methanol synthesis, methanol dehydration and water gas shift reaction. From a surface reaction with dissociative adsorption of hydrogen, methanol and water, individual reaction rate was determined

  • The cure kinetics of a cycloalipatic epoxy / anhydride / Co(II) system for a no-flow underfill encapsulant, has been studied by using a differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) under isothermal and dynamic conditions over the temperature range of $160^{\circ}C ~220^{\circ}C$. The kinetic analysis was carried out by fitting dynamic/isothermal heating experimental data to the kinetic expressions to determine the reaction parameters, such as order of reaction and reaction constants. Diffusion-controlled reaction has been observed as the cure conversion increases and successfully analyzed by incorporating the diffusion control term into the rate equation. The prediction of reaction rates by the model equation corresponded well to experimental data at all temperature.
