  • In this study, cement clinker using a pure sample and clinker using 7% coal ash were sintered at a temperature of 1050~1500℃. Changes in the content of cement minerals and changes in microstructure by sintering temperature were reviewed. The application of coal ash as a raw material for cement clinker was applicable as a source of Al2O3 and SiO2. At a sintering temperature of 1350℃ or higher, the cement clinker applied with coal ash showed the same level of mineral content as compared to the cement clinker applied with pure raw material. The microstructure also showed a similar state, confirming that coal ash can be used as a raw material for cement. In XRD-Reitveld analysis, a maximum amount of Belite was produced at 1250℃. The conversion from Belite to Alite was observed from 1350℃. From 1350℃, the interstitial phase and the mineral phase presumed to be alite were distinguished. It was clearly distinguished from 1400℃. As the sintering temperature increased, the shape and boundary of the crystal phase became clear, and the size of the crystal phase was also increased.

  • Utilization of fly ash by-produced from coal fired power plants and classified as general waste became very important problem to solve in the environmental protection and recycling of waste materials. The possibility of large scale substitution of fly ash as a raw material for bricks and wet tiles was highly expected because the chemical compositions of fly ash were mostly Al2O3 and SiO2 and the properties of it were very similar with clay. Accordingly in order to investigate the substitutional limit these specimens were substituted from 0 to 100 wt% fly ash by 20wt% increment for clay. Fly ash-clay bodies were fired at 1200, 1250 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ and then their properties were measured, It was found that these specimens sintered at 125$0^{\circ}C$ had a good bending strength. Especially when these sintered bodies were added to 20, 40 and 60 wt% fly ash the bending strength of those were 201 , 205 and 191kg.cm2 respectively with the water absorption below 1%, This showed that fly ash could be substituted ab 60 wt% in this experiment.

  • Coal briquette use has dramatically increased because of high oil prices. Hence, it is necessary to develop an environment-friendly recycling technique of the coal briquette ash. The coal briquette ash contains a large amount of an unburned carbon content and a mullite with high thermal property, so it is considered to be used as raw materials of sintered eco-brick. This study aimed to investigate on how the unburned carbon affects properties of the sintered eco-brick. The eco-brick was mixed with the ratio of 50 wt% coal briquette ash having the unburned carbon 10.5 wt% and 50 wt% cullet, then being sintered at $950^{\circ}C$, which of the compressive strength was in line with the first class of the sintered clay brick standard(KS L 4201). In particular, the compressive strength of the sintered eco-brick was equal to the first class of the KS L 4201 despite the increase of mixing ratio for coal briquette ash with 1.0 wt% unburned carbon to 70 wt%.

  • This study was carried out to synthesis the zeolite using the bituminous coal fly ash emitted from power plant that occurs several environmental problems. In spite of fly ash has contained high content of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, it disposed mainly landfill. If the effective methods to recover the $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ were developed, the fly ash could be utilized valuable raw materials. In this study, fly ash was used as raw material to synthesize the zeolite by pressurized hydrothermal reaction. Also, experimental parameters included temperature($70{\sim}110^{\circ}C$, and pressure($140{\sim}200$ psi) of crystallization were investigated. The more crystallization pressure was increased, the more Zeolite 4A was synthesized at 70 and $90^{\circ}C$. Zeolite 4A of metastable phase tend to be transformed into sodalite of stable phase at $110^{\circ}C$.

  • Coal ash, a material generated from coal-fired power plants, can be classified as fly ash and bottom ash. The amount of domestic fly ash generation is almost 6.84 million tons per year, while the amount of bottom ash generation is 1.51 million tons. The fly ash is commonly used as a concrete admixture and a subsidiary raw material in cement fabrication process. And some amount of bottom ash is used as a material for embankment and block. However, the recyclable amount of the ash is limited since it could cause deterioration of physical properties. In Korea, the ashes are simply mixed and used as a replacement material for cement. In this study, an attempt was made to mechanically activate the ash by grinding process in order to increase recycling rates of the fly ash. Activated fly ash was prepared by controlling the mill types and the milling times and characteristics of the mortar containing the activated fly ash was analyzed. When the ash was ground by using a vibratory mill, physical properties of the mortar mixed with such fly ash were higher than the mortar mixed with fly ash ground by a planetary mill.

  • In this study, the artificial coarse aggregate was manufactured by using coal ash and low grade clay. The characteristics of a coal ash-clay system were investigated using XRD, XRF, TG-DTA, SEM and Dilatometer with various coal ash contents. The chemical compositions are the fly ash, bottom ash and clay, $Al_2O_3$ are 28.5 wt%, 32.4 wt% and 18.1 wt%, and $SiO_2$ are 33.0 wt%, 53.7 wt% and 68.4 wt% in weight ratio, respectively. The shrinkage of specimens started at around $850^{\circ}C$ and changed little up to $1100^{\circ}C$, but increased markedly at above $1100^{\circ}C$. The shrinkage rate is strongly related to the decarbonization amount of coal ash. At the sintering temperature $1150^{\circ}C$, it was found that quartz, mullite, anorthite and albite phase exist in all specimens. It was found that bottom-clay system specimen sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ had a good compressive strength of 87.5 kg/$cm^2$, and the compressive strength of bottom-clay specimen was higher than that of fly-clay system specimen. The reusability of coal ash as a raw material in the process of shotcrete resources such as artifical coarse aggregate is highly expected.

  • Coal ash generated from thermal power plants using briquettes contains Si, Al, and Fe components. These components are the main components required for the manufacture of cement clinker. In particular, Al and Fe components form the interstitial phase of cement clinker and have an important effect on the sintering of cement clinker. In this study, a large amount of coal ash was applied as a raw material for cement clinker by content, and the mineral formation process of cement clinker to which coal ash was applied was confirmed by sintering temperature. It was confirmed that the intermediate phase was generated in the sintering temperature range of 1050 ~ 1150 ℃ in the cement clinker to which a large amount of coal ash was applied. As the content of coal ash increased, the production amount of the intermediate phase increased. The phase produced by the addition of coal ash is expected to be converted to calcium silicate phase and interstitial phase and disappear above 1350 ℃. The cement clinker applied with a large amount of coal ash at 1450 ℃ formed well-developed minerals equivalent to the standard cement clinker.

  • In this study, the possibility of the use of a new raw material in paperboard industry was investigated. Fly ash is one of the residues generated in the combustion of coal and generally captured from the chimney of coal-fired power plant. This material is utilized in many industries including cement, soil stabilization, composite etc., but it is not used in paper industry. Three types of fly ashes were collected from Hadong, boryeong and Seocheon steam power plants and we investigated their properties by scanning electron micrographs and particle size distribution. Papers were manufactured with KOCC and fly ashes, and the physical properties such as bulk, tensile strength, internal bond strength and ISO brightness were measured to identify the effects of fly ash on the paper properties.

  • New way to effectively capture $CO_2$ in coal fired power plant is the combustion of coal using oxy-fuel technology. Combustion characteristics of Minco sub-bituminous coal at oxy-fuel conditions using TGA and drop tube furnace (DTF) were included activation energy about the char burnout, volatile yield and combustion efficiency of raw coal, the porosity of pyrolyzed char and fusion temperature of by-product ash. TGA result shows that the effect of $CO_2$ on combustion kinetics reduces activation energy by approximately 7 kJ/mol at air oxygen level(21% $O_2$) and decreases the burning time by approximately 16%. The results from DTF indicated similar combustion efficiency under $O_2/CO_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ atmospheres for equivalent $O_2$ concentration whereas high combustion efficiency under $O_2/N_2$ than $O_2/CO_2$ was obtained for high temperature of more than $1,100^{\circ}C$. Overall coal burning rate under $O_2/CO_2$ is decreased due to the lower rate of oxygen diffusion into coal surface through the $CO_2$ rich boundary layer. By-product ash produced under $O_2/CO_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ was similar IDT in irrelevant to $O_2$ concentration and atmospheres gas during the coal combustion.

  • Charateristics of Ansan and Boryong coal fly ashes collected at different seasons were investigated for the recycling them as ceramic raw materials. The effect of pH treatment on the classification of Ansan coal fly ashes by elutriation was discussed. Charateristics of ansan and boryong coal fly ashes were not significantly changed with power plants and seasons. major crystalline phases were mullite and quartz. These results suggested that coal fly ashes cab be used as raw materials instead of clay minerals. However, particle size distribution was very broad from a few $\mu\textrm{m}$ to over $100\;\mu\textrm{m}$. Especially, ansan coal fly ashes have various morphologies. Therefore, coal fly ashes should be classified before using as raw materials. Because of higher dispersion by pH treatment, spherical cenospheres were mainly collected in the 4th step and particle size distribusion was also decreased by elutriation for the ansan coal fly ashes. The specific surface area of the sample collected in the 4th step was $1.24\;m^{2}/g$ which was smaller than that of not treated Ansan coal fly ashes.
