The intension of this study is to produce ordinary portland cement using ash, both bottom ash and fly ash, obtained from municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWI). We used limestone, waste molding sand, shale, slag from converting furnaces and fly ash as main raw materials and mixed them, setting the lime saturation factor (LSF) within 91.0, the silica modulus (SM) within 2.40, and iron modulus (IM) within 1.80. We conducted tests adding bottom ash alone 1, 2 and 3% by weight, respectively, and a mixture of bottom ash 0.9% and fly ash 0.1 % by weight. The result of analysis on clinker shows that the more ash is added, the lower the burnability index (B.I.) falls, lowering the mineral evolution of calcium silicate accordingly. From the measurement of compressive strength we have learned that the more ash is used, the lower the strength becomes.

Our aim was to identify the potential of reed stalk as a raw materials for biomass pellet production. Compared to woody biomass, reed stalk contained significant levels of ash. The holocellulose content of reed stalk was similar to that of larch, but the lignin content of reed stalk was lower than that of larch. In the elemental analysis, chlorine content of reed stalk was much higher than that of larch, and satisfied only the mixed biomass pellet B of European non-woody pellet standards(EN 14961-6). In quantitative analysis of the ash, heavy metals contents of reed stalk satisfied European non-woody pellet standards. Higher heating value of oven-dried reed stalk pellet was slightly lower than that of larch wood pellet. The durability of reed stalk pellet was lower than that of larch wood pellet. The results of this study indicate that reed stalk might be used as a raw material of mixed biomass pellet B.

Two types of synthetic zeolites, commercially used (Z-WK) and synthesized by coal fly ash (Z-C1), and raw coal fly ash(F-C1) were examined for its kinetics and adsorption capacities of cobalt. Experimental data are fitted with kinetic models, Lagergen $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ order models, and four types of adsorption isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Koble-Corrigan. Synthesized zeolite (Z-C1) which had 1.51 of Si/Al ratio was synthesized by raw coal fly ash from a thermal power plant. Adsorption capacities with three types of adsorbents, Z-WK, Z-C1, and F-C1, were in the order of Z-C1 (94.15 mg/g) > F-C1 (92.94 mg/g) > Z-WK (88.56mg/g). The adsorption kinetics of Z-WK and Z-C1 with cobalt could be accurately described by a pseudo-second-order rate equation. The adsorption isotherms of Z-WK and Z-C1 with cobalt were well fitted by the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson equation. Z-C1 will be used to remove cobalt in water as a more efficient absorbent.

Fly ash, plastic waste, and clay are mineral materials and residues commonly found in Malaysia. In this study, these materials were fully utilized as raw materials for synthesizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Recycled polypropylene, previously used as a food container, served as a carbon source. Fly ash and clay were explored as potential substrates for CNTs growth. The recycled polypropylene was thermally decomposed at 900 ℃ in an inert environment for 90 minutes. Carbon atoms released during this process were deposited on fly ash and clay substrates, which had been immersed in a ferrocene solution to provide a metal catalyst for CNTs growth. The deposited products were characterized using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Morphological analysis revealed that both fly ash and clay were coated with fiber-like structures, confirmed to be CNTs based on a diffraction peak around 26° from the XRD pattern. In conclusion, clay and fly ash demonstrate the potential to be utilized as substrates for CNTs formation.

In this study, cement clinker using a pure sample and clinker using 7% coal ash were sintered at a temperature of 1050~1500℃. Changes in the content of cement minerals and changes in microstructure by sintering temperature were reviewed. The application of coal ash as a raw material for cement clinker was applicable as a source of Al2O3 and SiO2. At a sintering temperature of 1350℃ or higher, the cement clinker applied with coal ash showed the same level of mineral content as compared to the cement clinker applied with pure raw material. The microstructure also showed a similar state, confirming that coal ash can be used as a raw material for cement. In XRD-Reitveld analysis, a maximum amount of Belite was produced at 1250℃. The conversion from Belite to Alite was observed from 1350℃. From 1350℃, the interstitial phase and the mineral phase presumed to be alite were distinguished. It was clearly distinguished from 1400℃. As the sintering temperature increased, the shape and boundary of the crystal phase became clear, and the size of the crystal phase was also increased.

Pond ash is a mixture of mostly coarser fly ash and bottom ash. The recycling rate of pond ash is low because pond ash is mixed with seawater and deposited in ponds. The pond ash is also subjected to natural weathering over a period of time. In this study, we investigated whether pond ash can be used as a raw material of geopolymers, without any purification process or through a minimal purification process. In addition, we investigated whether synthetic basalt made by adding foaming agent to geopolymer or casting it into a mold can show the surface of the natural basalt as it is. The highest 7-day compressive strength in geopolymers from pond ash without purification process was 26 MPa. The highest 7-day compressive strength in geopolymers from pond ash with impurities removed through dry sieve analysis was found to improve to 80 MPa. On the other hand, synthetic basalt made with geopolymer was shown to be more advantageous aesthetically when produced by casting it in a silicone mold rather than by adding a foaming agent. Non-purified pond ash can be made into geopolymers having low strength. Pond ash purified by sieving can, without use of an aggregate, be made into geopolymer having high-strength. Also, it is possible to produce synthetic basalt with the same appearance as natural basalt and sufficient strength for commercialization. This process will contribute to the mass consumption and recycling of pond ash.
The measurement of physicochemical properties of ASR incineration ash has been carried dot and the preparation of light-weight material has also been performed using ASR ash for recycling point of view as building or construction materials. For this aim, chemical composition, particle size distribution, and heavy metal leachability were examined for 2 bottom ashes and 4 fly ashes obtained from the domestic ASR incinerator. In the present work, attempt has been made to prepare the lightweight material using boiler ash as a raw material, which is prepared by forming the mixture of boiler ash, lightweisht filler and inorganic binder and followed by calcination at elevated temperature. As a result, the content of Cu in bottom ash was as high as about 3wt% so that the recovery of Cu from ash was required. The major compound of SDR #5 and Bag filter #6 was found to be $CaCl_2{\cdot}Ca(OH)_2{\cdot}H_2O\;and\;CaCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, respectively. It is thought that heavy metal teachability of lightweight material prepared with boiler ash was significantly decreased due to the encapsulation or stabilization of heavy metal compounds.

The coarse and fine aggregates that make up the majority of concrete are resources. But, the raw naturals that make up concrete are our earth's resources and there is not a replenishable stock. Also industrial waste and life waste leaped into a pollution source. Therefore, as construction continue, quarries are exhausted and new sources must be discovered. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an application of recycled coal ash plastics in the construction field. The study examined the physical and mechanical properties of recycled coal ash plastics aggregate. In the results, although the absorption and specific gravity of SLAs increases slightly as the fly ash content increases, the compressive strength and modulus of elastic of concrete made with SLAs remains relatively constant when mortar type and volume fraction are also held constant. These values are always lower than natural-weight aggregate concretes.
We manufacture artificial lightweight aggregates (ALWAs) using bottom-ash as the primary raw material. We coat the ALWA surfaces with low-melting point materials in order to enable them to bloat, which is essential to reduce the bulk density of the aggregate. Then, we sinter the prepared aggregates at 1000, 1100, and $1200^{\circ}C$ using either the direct or two-step firing schedules. Finally, we evaluate the properties of the fired samples through analyzing their bulk density, water absorption, and microstructure. The surface-modified samples result in a reduction of their bulk density by $0.3{\sim}0.4g/cm^3$ regardless of the firing method used. Based on these results, we conclude that this approach could provide a viable method for the mass-production of ALWAs from industrial waste such as bottom-ash.
