  • In this paper, the thermo-mechanical vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams subjected to three types of thermal loading including uniform, linear and non-linear temperature change are investigated in the framework of third-order shear deformation beam theory which captures both the microstructural and shear deformation effects without the need for any shear correction factors. Material properties of FG nanobeam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary gradually along the thickness according to the power-law form. Hence, applying a third-order shear deformation beam theory (TSDBT) with more rigorous kinetics of displacements to anticipate the behaviors of FG nanobeams is more appropriate than using other theories. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. The nonlocal equations of motion are derived through Hamilton's principle and they are solved applying analytical solution. The obtained results are compared with those predicted by the nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory and it is revealed that the proposed modeling can accurately predict the vibration responses of FG nanobeams. The obtained results are presented for the thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of the FG nanobeams such as the effects of material graduation, nonlocal parameter, mode number, slenderness ratio and thermal loading in detail. The present study is associated to aerospace, mechanical and nuclear engineering structures which are under thermal loads.

  • In this paper, using consistent couple stress theory and Hamilton's principle, the free vibration analysis of Euler-Bernoulli nano-beams made of bi-directional functionally graded materials (BDFGMs) with small scale effects are investigated. To the best of the researchers' knowledge, in the literature, there is no study carried out into consistent couple-stress theory for free vibration analysis of BDFGM nanostructures with arbitrary functions. In addition, in order to obtain small scale effects, the consistent couple-stress theory is also applied. These models can degenerate into the classical models if the material length scale parameter is taken to be zero. In this theory, the couple-tensor is skew-symmetric by adopting the skew-symmetric part of the rotation gradients as the curvature tensor. The material properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be graded in both axial and thickness directions, which it can vary according to an arbitrary function. The governing equations are obtained using the concept of Hamilton principle. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to solve the governing equations for various boundary conditions to obtain the natural frequencies of BDFG nano-beam. At the end, some numerical results are presented to study the effects of material length scale parameter, and inhomogeneity constant on natural frequency.

  • 3D finite element analyses of a corrugated steel web girder and a steel truss web girder are conducted to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of the hybrid girders. And the analyses results are compared with those by the equivalent beam theory. The equivalent theory is a theory that all section properties of a truss structure are replaced by section properties of a beam including a shear coefficient. When applying the equivalent beam theory, the shear coefficient of the corrugated steel web girder is estimated as the area ratio of flange section to web section and that of the steel truss web girder is calculated by the equation proposed by Abdel. Static deflections and natural frequencies by 3D finite element analyses and those by the equivalent beam theory are in good agreement.

  • The main aims of this study are to develop a new nonlocal quasi-3D theory for the free vibration behaviors of the functionally graded sandwich nanobeams. The sandwich beams consist of a ceramic core and two functionally graded material layers resting on elastic foundations. The two layers, linear spring stiffness and shear layer, are used to model the effects of the elastic foundations. The size-effect is considered using nonlocal elasticity theory. The governing equations of the motion of the functionally graded sandwich nanobeams are obtained via Hamilton's principle in combination with nonlocal elasticity theory. Then the Navier's solution technique is used to solve the governing equations of the motion to achieve the nonlocal free vibration behaviors of the nanobeams. A deep parametric study is also provided to demonstrate the effects of some parameters, such as length-to-height ratio, power-law index, nonlocal parameter, and two parameters of the elastic foundation, on the free vibration behaviors of the functionally graded sandwich nanobeams.

  • Credibility theory has provided with a useful tool the assignment of weighting factor that reflects the credibility of the observed individual and collective experience to secure fair experience rate-,making. We review credibility models which can effectively estimate risk premiums using credibility theory, and suggest an empirical Bayed model based on the collective statistics to estimate the structural parameters. To illustrate the use of evolutionary models, the models are applied to the actual data, such as loss ratio, claim frequencies and severity, in the Korean automobile insurance. Also the possibilities of generalizations and applications of empirical models are discussed.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze, based upon agency theory, empirically the relevance between ownership structure and corporate performance. In this study, samples are 285 firms listed in Korea stock exchage from 1990 to 1994. The results of this empirical test are summarized as follows : Insider-equity ratio of firm in Korea has been positively correlated with performance of corporate. This study intended to present the desirable implecations for seperation of ownership and management.

  • There are several theories to say that 'Mathematics is beautiful', but the typical one of them is a theory about the golden ratio. Often the golden ratio apt to be considered only as the geometric shapes or the simple number of ratio used in buildings and arts. However in this paper, we studied to consider the mathematical theories which are contained in their inside. In particular, we investigate the various expressions of the continued fraction which are represented by the golden ratio.

  • Our interest is to access in some way teh relative odds or probability that a multivariate observation Z belongs to one of k multivariate normal populations with unequal covariance matrices. We derived the empirical Bayes posterior odds ratio for the classification rule when population parameters are unknown. It is a generalization of the posterior odds ratio suggested by Gelsser (1964). The classification rule does not have complicated distribution theory which a large variety of techniques from the sampling viewpoint have. The proposed posterior odds ratio is compared to the Gelsser's posterior odds ratio through a Monte Carlo study. The results show that the empiricla Bayes posterior odds ratio, in general, performs better than the Gelsser's. Especially, for large dimension of Z and small training sample, the performance is prominent.

  • In this paper. the characteristics of mechanical behaviour due to various edge-ratio of uniformly loaded clamped skew-~plates has been described. In this study, the skew-plate was discretized using 8-noded isoparametric element and Mindlin's plate theory was adapted in finite element formulation. The edge-ratio 0.5,0.8,1.0,1.2,1.5,2.0 and 2.5 were considered. Hence, five cond- itions of the skew-angle, the seven levels of edge ratio were tried. When the edge-ratio was 2.5 or the edge-ratio was 2.0 and the skew-angle was less than 45 degree, the behaviour of the uniformly loaded the skew-plate with all edges clamped was independent of the skew-angle.
