  • This paper presents a new adaptive structure with fuzzy logic applied to adaptive controller. In the conventional adaptive control, good performance cannot be expected due to the adaptation gain of gradient algorithm fined as a constant. To change adaptation gain property, fuzzy rules, which are based on the output error and its rate of change, have been established. The proposed fuzzy adaptive law shows fast parameter convergence and improved performance. The fuzzy logic base is added to the conventional adaptive structure and little additional computation time is required.

  • Genetic Algorithm(GA), that is shown stable performance to find an optimal solution, has been used as a method of solving large-scaled optimization problems with complex constraints in various applications. Since it takes so much time to execute a long computation process for iterative evolution and adaptation. In this paper, a hardware-based adaptive GA was proposed to reduce the serious computation time of the evolutionary process and to improve the accuracy of convergence to optimal solution. The proposed GA, based on steady-state model among continuos generation model, performs an adaptive mutation process with consideration of the evolution flow and the population diversity. The drawback of the GA, premature convergence, was solved by the proposed adaptation. The Performance improvement of convergence accuracy for some kinds of problem and condition reached to 5-100% with equivalent convergence speed to high-speed algorithm. The proposed adaptive GAP(Genetic Algorithm Processor) was implemented on FPGA device Xilinx XCV2000E of EHW board for face recognition.

  • This paper proposes a new track-following control method using disturbance observer with the freedom of gain and frequency adaptation in optical disk drive system. Recent ODDs use smaller track pits, higher rotation speed and broader rotational speed variations to increase the data capacity and data transfer rate. This cause the degradation of track-following performance by increasing the disturbance of the rotary system. In this paper, we discussed on a DOB structure that efficiently attenuate the disturbance without effecting the overall feedback loop characteristics on CLV type ODD which uses a higher and broader range of rotational speed. DOB structure uses two band pass filter. We analyzed the track-following performance sensitivity on rotational frequency variance and gain changes. This analysis is done on a computer simulation environment and actual ODD product.

  • This paper presents a method of actively controlling the interior noise by a trim panel with hybrid feedforward-feedback control loop. The control technique is designed to minimize the vibration of panel whose motion is limited to that of a piston (out-of-plane motion). The hybrid controller consists of an adaptive feedforward controller in conjunction with a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) feedback controller. In order to maintain control performance of both persistent and transient disturbances, the feedback loop speeds up the adaptation rate of feedforward controller by improving damping capacity of secondary plant related with the adaptation rule. Numerical simulation and experimental result indicate that the hybrid controller is a more effective method for reducing the vibration of the panel (and therefore the interior noise) compared to using feedforward controller.

  • Convergence analysis on Godard's quartic (GQ) algorithm used forblind equalization is accomplished in this paper. The first main result is an explanation of the lacal behavior of the GQ algorithm around the global minimum point of the average performance functio, from which we can determine the adaptation gain. It is show that the normalized adaptation gain of the GQ algorithm should be smaller than that of the decision directed (DD) algorithm. In addition, it is observed that the GQ algorithm converges faster than the DD equalization algorithm.

  • Light plays an important role in making a continuity of space and in determining the distinctive expression and char-acter of a space. Particularly, the introduction of natural light derives from our esthetic needs, as well as from the fundamental biologi-cal necessities of human beings. And also, adaptation to time and space is the vital factor of human survival and prosperity. Our visual recognition of light is usually formed not only by practical illumination but by analogy, expection and expe-rienced of lighting itself. As the forecase of natural light is (almost) impossible be-cause of variables such as changing weather, reflection rate of light and the patterns of shade, in designing the introduc-tion of daylight, there should be follow-ed careful considera-tion of the adaptation to such variety and the impet-us of light. The research was conducted to mane a contribution to cre-ate more rich and beautiful interior spaces by studying the characteristic of light which is one of the important factors of interior space design, and by inquiring the way to intro-duce light and its effect through the practical examples of Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn.

  • Variable wireless channel is a big challenge for real-time video applications, and the rate adaptation of realtime video streaming becomes a hot topic. Intra-video coding is important for high-quality video communication and industrial video applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive scheme for real-time video transmission with intra-only coding over a wireless network. The key idea of this scheme is to estimate the instantaneous remaining capacity of the network to adjust the quality of the next several video frames, which not only can keep low queuing delay and ensure video quality, but also can respond to bandwidth changes quickly. We compare our scheme with three different schemes in the video transmission system. The experimental results show that our scheme has higher bandwidth utilization and faster bandwidth change response, while maintaining low queuing delay.

  • An efficient hybrid ARQ scheme based on the rate compatible block turbo codes has been proposed, and its performance has been analyzed. System efficiency is improved by means of adaptive rate code transmission using channel information, trading off bit rate for channel codes, with resulting energy saving. The rate adaptation scheme improves power efficiency while keeping packet delay minimized. On the other hand, power dependant strategies reduce power consumption. Simulation results show that the benefits obtained are very encouraging. The modified hybrid ARQ schemes with the channel information and efficient retransmission structures highly improve the throughput performance in the satellite communication system. Therefore, proposed schemes could be used in future communication systems.

  • We have developed fully functional Video Server and Client applications which can transmit, receive, decompress and display compressed video over various networks. Our video trans-port allows dynamic rate control feedback, loss detection, and repair requests from Clients to the Server. Our experiments show how feedvack-before-degradation scheme for rate adaptation maintains good display frame-rate for video playback. We show how the playback degradation(reduction in display frame-rate) oc-curs and what happens if corrective measures are not taken to im-prove the situation. The degradation is attributed to the increased internal kernel buffering which consumes scarce CPU resources. We demontrate with our experimental results that ServerNet, with improved hardware delivery guarantees, can significantly reduce host CPU resource consumption while serving video streams. We present the maximum number of streams which can be served for each of ATM and ServerNet interconnects. The appropriate user-level packet size for the video server are also determined for each case.

  • This paper examines an adaptive coding scheme for flat fading channels to maximize the average code rate of a coded system. The proposed adaptation technique is employed by using the required free distance of a rate compatible code depending on the channel realization. First, the system will calculate the required free distance based on the instantaneous channel gain. Based on this channel gain we will select a set of convolution code to optimize the code rate with a certain performance requirement. Simulation results show that our proposal can achieve a higher code rate.
