  • ZnO nanorods for gas sensors were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The ZnO gas sensors were fabricated on alumina substrates by a screen printing method. The gas-sensing properties of the ZnO nanorods were investigated for $CH_4$ gas. The effects of growth time on the structural and morphological properties of the ZnO nanorods were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The XRD patterns of the nanocrystallized ZnO nanorods showed a wurtzite structure with the (002) predominant orientation. The diameter and length of the ZnO nanorods increased in proportion to the growth time. The sensitivity of the ZnO sensors to 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas was investigated for various growth times. The ZnO sensors exhibited good sensitivity and rapid response-recovery characteristics to $CH_4$ gas, and both traits were dependent on the growth time. The highest sensitivity of the ZnO sensors to $CH_4$ gas was observed with the growth time of 7 h. The response and recovery times were 13 s and 6 s, respectively.

  • In this article, we described about the preparation and electrochemical properties of a flexible energy storage system based on a plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The PET treated with UV/ozone was fabricated with multilayer films composed of 30 polyaniline (PANi)/graphene oxide (GO) bilayers using layer-by-layer assembly of positively charged PANi and negatively charged GO. The conversion of GO to the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in the multilayer film was achieved using hydroiodic acid vapor at $100^{\circ}C$, whereby PANi structure remained nearly unchanged except a little reduction of doping state. Cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge curves of 30 PANi/RGO bilayers on PET substrate (shorten to PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET) exhibited an excellent volumetric capacitance, good cycling stability, and rapid charge/discharge rates despite no use of any metal current collectors. The specific capacitance from charge/discharge curve of the PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET electrode was found to be $529F/cm^3$ at a current density of $3A/cm^3$, which is one of the best values yet achieved among carbon-based materials including conducting polymers. Furthermore, the intrinsic electrical resistance of the PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET electrodes varied within 20% range during 200 bending cycles at a fixed bend radius of 2.2 mm, indicating the increase in their flexibility by a factor of 225 compared with the ITO/PET electrode.

  • Simultaneous determination of crop protection agents(CPAs) in food are done with multi-residue methods, which are composed of sample clean-up, concentration, chromatographic separation and detection. Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction(SBSE) technique is used for sample preparation of various analytes in several fields. The aim of this study was to develop a sensitive and fast method based on SBSE followed by thermal desorption - gas chromatography - mass spectrometry(TD - GC/MS) to determine CPAs in tobacco sample. For the analysis of tobacco sample prior to the SBSE method, solvent extraction or ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction was performed. methanol was used as the extraction solvent. The extract was then diluted with water. Finally, the sample was subjected to SBSE. A method for fast screening of crop protection agents in tobacco using SBSE-TD - GC/MS has been developed. About 17 CPAs including organochlorine, organophosphorous and others were identified and quantified. This method showed good linearity and high sensitivity for most of the target CPAs. The method was applied to the determination of CPAs at ng/mL levels in tobacco sample. This method is simple, rapid and may be applied in detection of other components.

  • Recently, Platelet rich plasma(PRP) is commonly used because it is now well known that platelets have many functions beyond that of simple hemostasis in aspect of containing autogenous source of several growth factors. It could be responsible for increasing cell mitosis, increasing collagen production, recruiting other cells to the site of injury, initiating vascular ingrowth, and inducing cell differentiation, enhancing bone formation capacity and easily handling to clinician. However, in spite of these clinical advantages, still the theory behind the use of PRP is compelling. This study was to determine preparation techniques used to increase the concentration of platelets and growth factors are all crucial steps in early wound healing of bone graft which may lead to a more rapid and denser bone regenerate. 200 volunteers were sampled and PRP were prepared according to each evaluation item in this study. Higher concentration of platelets have been gained in double centrifugation. 2000 and 2500 rpm showed proper concentration of platelets at first centrifugation and 5000 rpm in second. Timing for 2 minutes was showed good concentration of platelets in high and low centrifugation speed. It was better concentration of platelets in 20 or 30 ml volume during centrifugation. In histomorphologic findings, degrnulated and high concentraion of platelets were found in low centrifugation speed.

  • For the purpose of developing a direct label-free electrochemical detection system, we have systematically investigated the electrochemical signatures of each step in the preparation procedure, from a bare gold electrode to the hybridization of label-free complementary DNA, for the streptavidin-modified electrode. For the purpose of this investigation, we obtained the following pertinent data; cyclic voltammogram measurements, electrochemical impedance spectra and square wave voltammogram measurements, in $Fe(CN)_6^{3-}/Fe(CN)_6^{4-}$ solution (which was utilized as the electron transfer redox mediator). The oligonucleotide molecules on the streptavidin-modified electrodes exhibited intrinsic redox activity in the ferrocyanide-mediated electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, the investigation of electrochemical electron transfer, according to the sequence of oligonucleotide molecules, was also undertaken. This work demonstrates that direct label-free oligonucleotide electrical recognition, based on biofunctional streptavidin-modified gold electrodes, could lead to the development of a new biosensor protocol for the expansion of rapid, cost-effective detection systems.

  • Fabrication and characterization of dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cells(DSSC) consisting of spray-coated TiO2 electrode, an electrolyte containing I-/I3- redox couple, and a Pt-coated counter electrode carried out, using mainly FE-SEM and solar simulator. Also, effect of rapid thermal annealing(RTA) temperatue on I-V curves of DSSCS consisting of approximately 10m thickness and $5{\times}5mm2$ active area. No significant difference in the apparent size of TiO2 clusters was observed with increasing RTA temperature. Also, an open circuit voltage(Voc) of approximately 0.70V and a short-circuit photocurrent(Jsc) of 8 to 12mA/cm2 were observed in the TiO2 solar cell. With increasing RTA temperature upto 550oC, photocurrent density of dye-sensitized solar cells was enhanced, leading to enhancing the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells having Pt-electroplated counter electrode.

  • Identification of coating film species from ancient coating materials is needed to maintaine their surfaces without loss of their original beauty for a long time and understand the historical background of manufacturing techniques. A pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was applied to identify the origine of films in ancient coating materials. The pyrolysis products, which reflect the source from which they originate were detected distinctively at $500^{\circ}C$. This is a rapid technique that does not require large amounts of sample or any sample preparation. Sesquiterpenes are a class of terpenes that consist of three isoprene units were identified as cadienes, selinenes, cubebenes from the raw material of dendropanax morbifera. On the other hand, alkanes(tetra~heptadecanes), alkenes (tri~heptadecenes), allkyphenols, catechols and fatty acids were detected from the raw material of the lacquer film. Based on these results, the origine of historic coatings artifacts was identified using py-GC/MS by comparison with their pyrolysis products.

  • Solid dispersion (SD) system of everolimus (EVR) with Gelucire 50/13 (Stearoyl polyoxyl-32 glycerides) was prepared using melt granulation technique with the aim of improving the physicochemical properties and dissolution rate. The solid state characterization using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction, indicated that the drug was homogeneously distributed in the surfactant carrier in a stable amorphous form. The dissolution rate of EVR from the optimized SD composed of the drug, Gelucire 50/13 and microcrystalline cellulose in a weight ratio of 1:5:10, was markedly rapid and higher than that from the drug powder and the market product (Afinitor$^{(R)}$, Novartis Pharmaceuticals) in all dissolution mediums tested from pH 3.0 to pH 6.8. The results of this study suggest that formulation of SD with Gelucire 50/13 using melt granulation procedure may be a simple and promising approach for improving the dissolution rate and oral absorption of the anti-cancer agent without the need for using an organic solvent.

  • Lily symptomless virus (LSV), Lily mottle virus (LMoV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) are the most prevalent viruses infecting lilies in Korea. Leaf and bulb samples showing characteristic symptoms of virus infection were collected in 2012, and 80 field samples were analyzed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The infection frequencies were 79% for LMoV, 5% for LSV, and 3% for CMV. The LMoV coat protein gene was amplified and cloned into the pET21d(+) expression vector to develop serological diagnostic tools to detect LMoV. The resulting carboxy-terminal His-tagged coat proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli strain BL21 (DE3) by induction with IPTG. The recombinant proteins were purified using Ni-NTA agarose beads and used as an antigen to produce polyclonal antibodies in laying hens. The resulting egg yolk immunoglobulin (IgY) specifically recognized LMoV from infected plant tissues in immunoblotting assays and had comparable sensitivity to that of a mammalian antibody. In addition, method of immunocapture RT-PCR using this IgY was developed for sensitive, efficient, and rapid detection of LMoV. Based on these results, large-scale bulb tests and detection of LMoV in epidemiological studies can be performed routinely using this IgY. This is the first report of production of a polyclonal IgY against a plant virus and its use for diagnosis.

  • Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry is commonly used to analyze biological molecules such as proteins, peptides and lipids from cells or tissue. Recently MALDI Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) has been widely applied for the identification of different drugs and their metabolites in tissue. This special feature has made MALDI-MS a common choice for investigation of the molecular histology of pathological samples as well as an important alternative to other conventional imaging methods. The basic advantages of MALDI-IMS are its simple technique, rapid acquisition, increased sensitivity and most prominently, its capacity for direct tissue analysis without prior sample preparation. Moreover, with ms/ms analysis, it is possible to acquire structural information of known or unknown analytes directly from tissue sections. In recent years, MALDI-IMS has made enormous advances in the pathological field. Indeed, it is now possible to identify various changes in biological components due to disease states directly on tissue as well as to analyze the effect of treated drugs. In this review, we focus on the advantages of MALDI tissue imaging over traditional methods and highlight some motivating findings that are significant in pathological studies.
