The purpose of the present study was to investigate the age-related differences in recall and to assess effects of presentation modality, encoding condition and cue modality on recall in terms of encoding specificity principles and dual-coding theory. Eighty children in each of 3grades(first, third and fifth) were presented a 30-item set of pictures or words on cars for recall in a study-test procedure. The experiment was designed as a 3(age) x 2(presentation modality:picture or word) x 2(encoding condition:random or category) x 2(cue modality:picuture or word) factorial design. Statistical analyses were with four-way ANOVA and $Scheff\acute{e}$ test. It was concluded from these results that when the stimulus was presented by pictures, encoded by category and the cues were also presented by pictures, recall increased in all ages. These results were interpreted in terms of encoding specificity principles and dual-coding theory.

Because of a sudden growth of the research of fatigue failure, recent machines or structures have been designed by damage tolerance design in many fields. Consequently, it is the most primary factor to clarity the specific character of fatique failure in the design of machines or structures considering reliability. A statistical analysis is required to analyze the outcome of an experiment or a life estimate by reason of that fatigue failure contains lots of random elements. Reliability analysis which has tukenn the place of the existing analyses in the consideration of the uncertainty of a material, is a very efficient way. Even reliability analysis, however, is not a perfect way to analyses the uncertainties of all the materials. This thesis would refer to a newly conceived data analysis that the coefficient of a system could cause the ambiguity of the relationship of an input and output.
As a result of quickly growing data, a digital transmission system is required to deal with the challenge of acquiring signals at a very high sampling rate, Fortunately, the CS (Compressed Sensing or Compressive Sensing) theory, a new concept based on theoretical results of signal reconstruction, can be employed to exploit the sparsity of the received signals. Then, they can be adequately reconstructed from a set of their random projections, leading to dramatic reduction in the sampling rate and in the use of ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) resources. The goal of this article is provide an overview of the basic CS theory and to survey some important compressed sensing applications in wireless communications.

The average distortio of the vector quantizer is calcualted using a probability function F of the input source for a given codebook. But, since the input source is unknown in geneal, using the sample vectors that is realized from a random vector having probability function F, a time-average opeation is employed so as to obtain an approximation of the average distortion. In this case the size of the smple set should be large so that the sample vectors represent true F reliably. The theoretical inspection about the approximation, however, is not perfomed rigorously. Thus one might use the time-average distortion without any verification of the approximation. In this paper, the convergence characteristics of the time-average distortions are theoretically investigated when the size of sample vectors or the size of codebook gets large. It has been revealed that if codebook size is large enough, then small sample set is enough to obtain the average distortion by approximatio of the calculated tiem-averaged distortion. Experimental results on synthetic data, which are supporting the analysis, are also provided and discussed.
Simplified equations for fundamental period of vibration of skeletal structures provided by most seismic design provisions suffer from the absence of any associated confidence levels and of any reference to their empirical basis. Therefore, such equations may typically give a sector of designers the false impression of yielding a fairly accurate value of the period of vibration. This paper, although not addressing simplified codes equations, introduces a set of mathematical equations utilizing the theory of error propagation and First-Order Second-Moment (FOSM) techniques to determine bounds on the relative error in theoretically calculated fundamental period of vibration of skeletal structures. In a complementary step, and for verification purposes, Monte Carlo simulation technique has been also applied. The latter, despite involving larger computational effort, is expected to provide more precise estimates than FOSM methods. Studies of parametric uncertainties applied to reinforced concrete frame bents - potentially idealized as SDOF systems - are conducted demonstrating the effect of randomness and uncertainty of various relevant properties, shaping both mass and stiffness, on the variance (i.e. relative error) in the estimated period of vibration. Correlation between mass and stiffness parameters - regarded as random variables - is also thoroughly discussed. According to achieved results, a relative error in the period of vibration in the order of 19% for new designs/constructions and of about 25% for existing structures for assessment purposes - and even climbing up to about 36% in some special applications and/or circumstances - is acknowledged when adopting estimates gathered from the literature for relative errors in the relevant random input variables.
We consider the problem of placing resources in a distributed computing system so that certain performance requirements may be met while minimizing the number of required resource copies, irrespective of node or link failures. To meet the requirements for high performance and high availability, minimum number of resource copies should be placed in such a way that each node has at least two copies on the node or its neighbor nodes. This is called the fault-tolerant resource placement problem in this paper. The structure of a parallel or a distributed computing system is represented by a graph. The fault-tolerant placement problem is first transformed into the problem of finding the smallest fault-tolerant dominating set in a graph. The dominating set problem is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, searching for the smallest fault-tolerant dominating set is formulated as a state-space search problem, which is then solved optimally with the well-known A* algorithm. To speed up the search, we derive heuristic information by analyzing the properties of fault-tolerant dominating sets. Some experimental results on various regular and random graphs show that the search time can be reduced dramatically using the heuristic information.
In-network storage is an effective technique for avoiding network congestion and reducing power consumption in continuous data collection in wireless sensor networks. In recent years, network coding based storage design has been proposed as a means to achieving ubiquitous access that permits any query to be satisfied by a few random (nearby) storage nodes. To maintain data consistency in continuous data collection applications, the readings of a sensor over time must be sent to the same set of storage nodes. In this paper, we present an efficient approach to updating data at storage nodes to maintain data consistency at the storage nodes without decoding out the old data and re-encoding with new data. We studied a transmission strategy that identifies a set of storage nodes for each source sensor that minimizes the transmission cost and achieves ubiquitous access by transmitting sparsely using the sparse matrix theory. We demonstrate that the problem of minimizing the cost of transmission with coding is NP-hard. We present an approximation algorithm based on regarding every storage node with memory size B as B tiny nodes that can store only one packet. We analyzed the approximation ratio of the proposed approximation solution, and compared the performance of the proposed coding approach with other coding schemes presented in the literature. The simulation results confirm that significant performance improvement can be achieved with the proposed transmission strategy.
Spatial variability is an inherent characteristic of soil, and auto-correlation length (ACL) is a very important parameter in the reliability or probabilistic analyses of geotechnical engineering that consider the spatial variability of soils. Current methods for estimating the ACL need a large amount of laboratory or in-situ experiments, which is a great obstacle to the application of random field theory to geotechnical reliability analysis and design. To estimate the ACL reasonably and efficiently, we propose a micro-structure based numerical simulation method. The quartet structure generation set algorithm is used to generate stochastic numerical micro-structure of soils, and scanning electron microscope test of soil samples combined with digital image processing technique is adopted to obtain parameters needed in the QSGS algorithm. Then, 2-point correlation function is adopted to calculate the ACL based on the generated numerical micro-structure of soils. Results of a case study shows that the ACL can be estimated efficiently using the proposed method. Sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the ACL will become stable with the increase of mesh density and model size. A model size of $300{\times}300$ with a grid size of $1{\times}1$ is suitable for the calculation of the ACL of clayey soils.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the amount of available wave power and its characteristics related to the development of apractical system for ocean wave energy conversion in Korean coastal waters. The analysis method of wave power was established through comparison between theory and numerical simulation of deep sea wave by Inverse Fourier Transform with random phase method. Based on the results of comparison, wave power was estimated by use of data set from observed offshore and coastal waves and hindasted deep sea waves around the Korean peninsula. Annual mean wave power is estimated as about 1.8 ~ 7.0 kW for every metre of wave frontage at East sea, 1.5~5.3 kW at South sea and 1.0 ~ 4.1 kW at West sea, respectively. Mean wave power along deep sea front of coastal waters of Korea amounts to about 4.7 GW. Regional distribution and seasonal variation of wave power were discussed to develop practical utilization system of wave power of not so high grade of available wave power.
There has been a growing interest in the application of biorhythm theory to programmes of accident prevention and performance prediction. In order for biorhythm to be applie to practice its validity and reliability should be established. This paper reported the results of three different set of data, and these data were tabulated and analysed in various ways. The basic method of analysis consisted of stat- istical comparision of actual frequences of occurrence from the collected data with those frequencies which would be expected if biorhythm had no effect. The results of the occurrence data indicated that no definite evidence in support of the influence of the fundamentals could be detected. Actual frequencies of occurrence from the collected data were not significantly different them those expected assuming random occurrence.
