  • The reliability assessment of a simple porbabilistic fatigue analysis under random loading is proposed. Using the crack closure concept, the crack opening stress is assumed to be constant during random loading. The available loading history and test data are used for the comparison with the results of the reliability assessment of probabilistic fatigue analysis.

  • The primary aim of this paper is to evaluate the probabilistic fatigue crack propagation models using the residual of a random variable and to present the probabilistic model fit for the probabilistic fatigue crack growth behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys under maximum load conditions. The models used in this study were prepared by applying a random variable to empirical fatigue crack propagation models such as the Paris-Erdogan model, Walker model, Forman model, and modified Forman model. It was verified that the good models for describing the stochastic variation of the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys under maximum load conditions were the 'probabilistic Paris-Erdogan model' and 'probabilistic Walker model'. The influence of the maximum load conditions on the stochastic variation of fatigue crack growth is also considered.

  • The temperature variation of the concrete pavement in the early age significantly affects the initiation and propagation of its early age cracks. This implies that the measurement and analysis of early age temperature trend are necessary to examine the causes of early age cracks in the concrete pavement. In this study, it is investigated how the early age temperature trend in the concrete pavement affects the random crack initiation and behaviors of saw-cut joints using the actual construction site which is located at the KHC test road. During 72 hours after placing the concrete pavement, the ambient air temperature and temperatures at the top, middle, and bottom in the concrete pavement were measured and the random crack initiation in concrete slabs and early age behaviors in the joints were surveyed. The investigation results indicate that the first random crack was initiated at one of the slabs placed in the early morning which have higher temperature changes during early 72 hours. In addition, the joints that were saw-cut in the morning were cracked more rapidly than those saw-cut in the afternoon.

  • Ships and ocean structures are generally under random loading. Various type of variable-amplitude loading affects fatigue crack growth and fatigue life. However interaction effects due to irregularity of loading including random loading have not explained exactly and it is difficult to examined fatigue crack growth behaviour and fatigue life for this reason. Therefore in this paper crack growth tests with constant-amplitude loading including a single overload were conducted to measure plastic zone size near crack tip of DENT specimen. And the observed plastic zone sized were discussed in terms of crack growth rate. As a result of this the effect the plastic rue size due to the overload is examined on the effect on crack growth rate and, consequently, fatigue life.

  • To analyze and predict crack initiation position and propagation directions on the spot welded area are very important for strength design of the automobile body structure. It is necessary to test by method considering random loads with variable amplitude for strength design of vehicle body structure, because driving cars are actually subjected to random loads with variable amplitude in the road. Although this condition, nearly all tests haute been performed under constant load conditions in the laboratory because it is impossible to replay like an actual conditions. In this study, using in-plane bending type specimens, the overload factor affecting on the fatigue strength, crack initiation and propagation directions of spot-welded specimens have been studied.

  • In this study, to investigate the fatigue crack retardation behavior and the variability of retardation cycles, fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy under single tensile overload. A retardation coefficient, D was introduced to describe fatigue crack retardation behavior and a random variable, Z to describe the variability of fatigue crack growth. The retardation coefficient was separately formulated according to retardation behavior which is composed of delayed retardation part and retardation part. The random variable, Z was evaluated from experimental data which was obtained from fatigue crack growth tests under constant amplitude load. Using these variables, a probabilistic model was developed on the basis of the modified Forman's equation, and retardation behavior and cycles were predicted under certain overload condition. The predicted retardation curve well agrees with the trend of experimental crack retardation behavior. And this model well predicts the scatter of experimental retardation cycles.

  • Striation is a typical pattern observed on the fatigue fracture surface and the spacing is known to correspond to a macroscopic fatigue crack growth rate, and many models for the predict in the formation of such striation have been proposed. However, these theories and methods can't be applied under random loading spectrum. In this study, the fatigue tests were carried out on aluminum alloy under random loading spectrum. The fatigue fracture surfaces were observed in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and great quantities of SEM micrographs were synthesized and saved in computer system. The space and morphology of several large-scale striations, which are expected to from at the relatively greater load range in loading block, were observed. The crack length for each loading blocks was decided in consideration of regularity and repetition of those striations. It is shown that the applicability of fractographic methods on the fatigue fracture surface under random loading spectrum.

  • The fatigue crack propagation of random short fiber SMC composite material was investigated. In macroscopic viewpoint, SMC composite material was treated as isotropic material and was analyzed in terms of conventional fracture mechanics. Experiments were conducted on mode I and mixed respectively and various loading level was applied to each mode. Fatigue crack growth can be explained in three steps and most of fatigue life is consumed in initial crack growth. In this experiments, power law, i.e, da/dN=C(C.DELTA.K)$^{m}$ , between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range, was valid and the value of the exponent m is about 10, which is much higher than that of other metals. Fracture mechanism was also investigated by SEM fractographic study.

  • The primary aim of this paper was to evaluate several probabilistic fatigue crack propagation models using the residual of a random variable, and to present the model fit for probabilistic fatigue behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys. The proposed probabilistic models are the probabilistic Paris-Erdogan model, probabilistic Walker model, probabilistic Forman model, and probabilistic modified Forman models. These models were prepared by applying a random variable to the empirical fatigue crack propagation models with these names. The best models for describing fatigue crack propagation behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys were generally the probabilistic Paris-Erdogan and probabilistic Walker models. The probabilistic Forman model was a good model only for a specimen with a thickness of 9.45 mm.

  • This paper deals with the industrial problem of thermal striping damage on the French prototype fast breeder reactor, Phenix and it was studied in coordination with the research program of IAEA. The thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the tee-junction of the secondary piping using Green's function method and standard FEM is presented. The thermohydraulic(T/H) loading condition used in the present analysis is the random type thermal loads computed by T/H analysis on the turbulent mixing of the two flows with different temperatures. The thermomechanical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code section 111 subsection NH. The results of the fatigue analysis showed that fatigue failure would occur at the welded joint within 90,000 hours of operation. The assessment for the fracture behavior of the welded joint showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage in the operation. It took 42,698.9 hours for the crack to propagate up to 5 mm along the thickness direction. After then, however, the instability analysis, using tearing modulus, showed that the crack would be arrested, which was in agreement with the actual observation of the crack. An efficient analysis procedure using Green's function approach for the crack propagation problem under random type load was proposed in this study. The analysis results showed good agreement with those of the practical observations.
