  • Composite membranes having different mixing ratio of Wool(SCMK) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared by dissolving wool/PET in hexafluoro-2-propanol(HFIP), casting the obtained solution on a glass plate and evaporation the solvent in the presence and absence of an electric field. The internal structure of the prepared membrane was investigated using polarise microscope dyeing and dye permeation method. In the composite membrane prepared under electric field, both components were micro mixing, while in the membranes prepared under nonelectric field, the two components formed a random sea/island structure according to different mixing ratio. Such characteristic membrane structure was influenced the permeation behavior of C.I. Acid Red 118 through the membranes from an aqueous solution.

  • In this paper, some characterization results of the NBUCA class of life distributions are obtained. Behavior of the life distributions of the present class is developed in terms of the monotonicity of the residual life of k-out of-n systems given that the (n-k)th failure has occurred at time $t{\geq}0$. Similar conclusions based on the residual life of parallel system are also presented. Next, we focus upon the aging process of a system with independent but not necessarily identical NBUCA components. Finally, it is proved that if the lifetimes of a series systems with a random number of identical components have the NBUCA property then its units also have the same property.

  • Reproductive data collected from more than 20,000 Japanese Black cows of Hyogo and Shimane Prefectures were analyzed. Averages of age at first calving, gestation length, days open and calving interval were 25.1 mo, 289 d, 112 d and 401 d, respectively. Variance components were obtained by REML procedure and the heritability estimate of age at first calving was 0.22. In gestation length the heritability estimate was 0.40 and no permanent environmental effect was estimated. Estimated variance components of calving interval were similar to those of days open and the heritability and repeatability of calving interval were 0.05 and 0.09, respectively. Random farm effects accounted for approximately 10% of phenotypic variations in all traits. Genetic and farm correlations between age at first calving and calving interval were 0.27 and 0.39, respectively. It was found that temporary environment was an important source of variation for calving intervals of Japanese Black.

  • This investigation deals with reliability and sensitivity analysis of a repairable embedded system with standby wherein repairman takes multiple vacations. The hardware system consists of 'M' operating and 'S' standby components. The repairman can leave for multiple vacations of random length during its idle time. Whenever any operating unit fails, it is immediately replaced by a standby unit if available. Moreover, governing equations of an embedded system are constructed using appropriate birth-death rates. The vacation and repair time of repairman are exponentially distributed. The matrix method is used to find the steady-state probabilities of the number of failed components in the embedded system as well as other performance measures. Reliability indexes are presented. Further, numerical experiments are carried out for various system characteristics to examine the effects of different parameter. Using a special class of neuro-fuzzy systems i.e. Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Interference Systems (ANFIS), we also approximate various performance measures. Finally, the conclusions and future research directions are provided.

  • Accurate mathematical models of spacecraft components are an essential of spacecraft attitude control system design, analysis and simulation. Gyro is one of the most important spacecraft components used for attitude propagation and control. Gyro errors may seriously degrade the accuracy of the calculated spacecraft angular rate and of attitude estimates due to inherent drift and bias errors. In this paper, a detailed mathematical model of gyro containing the relationships for predicting spacecraft angular rate and disturbances is proposed. Stochastic model describing random drift behavior is discussed in frequency domain and time domain. In order to illustrate this approach, we analyze the behavior for Litton´s Space Inertial Reference Uint(SIRU).

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and trends for milk, fat, and protein yields in the first three lactations of Thai dairy cattle using a 3-trait,-3-lactation random regression test-day model. Methods: Data included 168,996, 63,388, and 27,145 test-day records from the first, second, and third lactations, respectively. Records were from 19,068 cows calving from 1993 to 2013 in 124 herds. (Co) variance components were estimated by Bayesian methods. Gibbs sampling was used to obtain posterior distributions. The model included herd-year-month of testing, breed group-season of calving-month in tested milk group, linear and quadratic age at calving as fixed effects, and random regression coefficients for additive genetic and permanent environmental effects, which were defined as modified constant, linear, quadratic, cubic and quartic Legendre coefficients. Results: Average daily heritabilities ranged from 0.36 to 0.48 for milk, 0.33 to 0.44 for fat and 0.37 to 0.48 for protein yields; they were higher in the third lactation for all traits. Heritabilities of test-day milk and protein yields for selected days in milk were higher in the middle than at the beginning or end of lactation, whereas those for test-day fat yields were high at the beginning and end of lactation. Genetics correlations (305-d yield) among production yields within lactations (0.44 to 0.69) were higher than those across lactations (0.36 to 0.68). The largest genetic correlation was observed between the first and second lactation. The genetic trends of 305-d milk, fat and protein yields were 230 to 250, 25 to 29, and 30 to 35 kg per year, respectively. Conclusion: A random regression model seems to be a flexible and reliable procedure for the genetic evaluation of production yields. It can be used to perform breeding value estimation for national genetic evaluation in the Thai dairy cattle population.

  • Seismic fragility assessments include a procedure to combine the random variables of response and capacity to produce the relationship between failure probability and seismic intensity. The evaluation of the failure probability of simultaneous multiple failures of two or more components assumes that the failure probability of each component is independent of those of the others. However, a correlation is expected to exist because several random factors have the same cause. The multiple-failure probability can differ depending on this correlation and may be unconservative without considering the seismic correlation. Therefore, a practical methodology for fragility assessment should be evaluated using the seismic correlation and correlation coefficient for each random variable. In this study, several random variables were selected for numerical evaluation of the correlation coefficient. The correlation coefficient was then compared with each variable and the combined variables. The correlation coefficient using simplified and complex models were also compared to determine and analyze the differences between each of the approaches.

  • The loss of strength in a structure as a result of cyclic loads over a period of life time is an important phenomenon for the life-cycle analysis. Service loads are accentuated at the areas of stress concentration, mainly at the connection of components. Structural components unavoidably are affected by defects such as surface scratches, surface roughness and weld defects of random sizes, which usually occur during the manufacturing and handling process. These defects are shown to have an important effect on the fatigue life of the structural components by promoting crack initiation sites. The value of equivalent initial flaw size (EIFS) is calculated by using the back extrapolation technique and the Paris law of fatigue crack growth from results of fatigue tests. We try to analyze the effect of EIFS distribution in a multiple site damage (MSD) specimen by using the extended finite element method (XFEM). For the analysis, fatigue tests were conducted on the centrally-cracked specimens and MSD specimens.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective method to extract background components in automated vision inspection system for polarized film used in TFT LCD display panels. The test image signals are typically composed of three components such as ununiform background, random noises and target defect signals. It is important to analyze the background signal for accurate extraction of defect components. Two dimensional continuous wavelets with first derivative gaussian is used. This methods can be applied for reliable extraction of defect signal by elimination of the background signal from the original image. The proposed method outperforms over conventional FFT methods.

  • Noises from circuits components and interference with other circuits components generate the phase noise in voltage controlled oscillators (VCO). The effects of the random noise on the phase noise is depending on the instant when the noise enters the VCO. When the noise enters at the transition time of the output of VCO, the effect is most prominent. Using this time variable system, it is revealed that the power spectral density of phase noise of VCO is made of the integrated noise powers of frequency components slightly offset from the fundamental and harmonic frequencies.
