Recently climate change and increase of surface runoff caused the urban flooding. Traditional way of dealing with urban flooding has been to increase the sewer capacity or construction of pumping stations, however, it is practically almost impossible because of time, money and traffic problems. Multipurpose DRMS (Decentralized Rainwater Management System) is a new paradigm proposed and recommended by NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) for both flood control and water conservation. Suwon City has already enacted the ordinance on sound water cycle management by DRMS. In this study, a flood prone area in Suwon is selected and analysis of DRMS has been made using XP-SWMM for different scenarios of RT installation with same total rainwater tank volume and location. Installing one rainwater tank of 3,000$m^3$ can reduce the peak flow rate by 15.5%. Installing six rainwater tanks of 500$m^3$ volume in the area can reduce the peak flow rate by 28%. Three tanks which is concentrated in the middle region can reduce peak rate more than evenly distributed tanks. The method and results found from this study can be used for the design and performance prediction of DRMS at a flood prone area by supplementing the existing sewer system without increase of the sewer capacity.
The issue of acid precipitation and related environmental problems in East Asia have been emerging. To evaluate the acidity and chemical characteristics of rainwater in Korea, its chemical properties during crop cultivation season from April to October were investigated at Suwon, Korea. Also, to estimate the contribution of ions on its acidity, ion composition characteristics and neutralization effects by cation ions were determined. Ion balance and electrical conductivity balance between the measured and estimated values showed high correlation. Rainwater had distributed highly in the range of pH 4.5~5.6. The pH of rainwater was relatively high at June as compared with other monitoring periods. $Na^+$ was the main cation followed by $NH_4{^+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $H^+$ > $K^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$. Among these, $Na^+$, $NH_4{^+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $H^+$ covered over 93% of total cations. About 86% of anion in rainwater was composed of $SO{_4}^{2-}$ and $NO_3{^-}$. In rainwater samples, $NH_4{^+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ contributed greatly to neutralization of the rain acidity. Also, 88% of soluble sulfate in rainwater was nss-$SO{_4}^{2-}$(non-sea salt sulfate).

In this study, rainwater-greywater hybrid system was installed and operated for 1 year in order to evaluate its water quantity, water quality, and economic efficiency in building no. 39. This system was expected to overcome each disadvantages of and maximize each advantages. Low-greywater that was washed up from shower room was treated by MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) and ozone oxidation. Rainwater that was collected from the rooftop was stored in a reservoir, and then transferred to the storage tank that was mixed with treated greywater. After 1 year operating in building no. 39, rainwater and greywater was used to supply $2,599m^3$ of toilet flushing water. In terms of water quality, rainwater was satisfied far the greywater reuse standards except for E.coli. Moreover, low greywater quality was acceptable except for E. coli, BOD, SS, and turbidity. In addition, economic analysis was obtained from benefit-cost ratio (B/C) with 1.11. It implies that the feasibility of the project was reasonable. Furthermore, various research and policy to improve the economic efficiency of water recycling facilities is required to expand the use of water recycling facilities.

Drinking water deficiency is prevalent in developing countries due to contamination of surface and ground water, difficulties of water treatment, and lack of water infrastructures. 'Rainwater For Drinking (RFD)' projects are emerging as one of the effective solutions globally since RFD systems provide safe drinking water from rainwater. In RFD projects, perception of local residents toward RFD project is essential as local residents must manage their RFD systems on their own after the project finishes. This research performed survey and interview to 209 local residents, who use RFD systems, and analyzed their general perception, expected effects and feared factors toward RFD projects. Through the research, it was shown that the most of the local residents have positive perception towards RFD projects' effectiveness (41.9%) and are willing to participate (58.9%). The top three expected effect factors of the RFD projects were 'supply of safe water source', 'vitalization of local community', and 'expansion of RFD system'. The top three feared factors were 'quality of rainwater', 'technical factors of RFD system', and 'maintenance of RFD system'. The research findings indicate that development of simple water quality measuring device and education of the local residents about RFD system is necessary for better maintenance of the RFD system after the project finishes.
This study was carried out to assess the neutralization ability of $NH_4{^+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ on the acidity of rainwater in Korea. The rainwater was collected in Ansung area for six months from May to October in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 1998, respectively. Rainwater were analyzed for chemical composition and their theoretical pH values were calculated. As for the results, the distribution rates of rain at the pH 5.0~5.6 range were high. The equivalent ratio of $SO_4{^2-}/NO_3{^-}$ was decreased since 1994. Theoretical acidity which was calculated by-$log([H^+]+[NH_4{^+}]+[Ca^{2+}])$ was 5.0~12.6 times higher than measured acidity in Ansung area each monitoring year. The monthly difference between measured pH and theoretical pH was lower in July and August than any other month. $NH_4{^+}$ contributed more to the neutralization of rainwater acidity than $Ca^{2+}$. And the neutralization ratio of rainwater acidity by these two ions decreased during the years from 91.8% in 1993 to 88.7% in 1998.

Most of Korea's agricultural water is supplied by reservoirs, so dependence on them is very high. Accordingly, it is important to reduce this dependence and provide a stable agricultural water supply by utilizing an applicable alternative water source. Therefore, in this work, scenarios for different land uses were constructed, and an optimal water supply plan using rainwater and reused sewage water - which are alternative water sources - was created. A study was also conducted to determine the optimal capacity of a rainwater facility. From the analysis, a stable water supply was achieved in the scenario of maximum utilization of rainwater by changing an existing paddy area to a greenhouse area, and about 0.82 ton of flow capacity was required for 1 mm of rainfall on farms utilizing rainwater. As a result of analyzing the optimal scenario to derive the ratio of the storage capacity per unit water collection area, the rainwater storage capacity determined through MODSIM and the storage capacity determined through actual monitoring showed similar results, about 31 and 32 %, respectively, and the optimal capacity of rainwater facilities was calculated to be about 5,796,000-6,182,400 ton.
This study analyzed the effect of meteorological factors on the concentration of PM10 (particulate matter 10) in the atmosphere and the variation of rainwater quality using multivariate statistical analysis. The concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere was continuously measured during eleven precipitation events with a custom-built PM sensor node. A total of 183 rainwater samples were analyzed for pH, EC (electrical conductivity), and water-soluble cations (Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+) and anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-). The data has been analyzed using two multivariate statistical techniques (principal component analysis, PCA, and Pearson correlation analysis) to identify relationships among PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere, meteorological factors, and rainwater quality factors. When the rainfall intensity was relatively strong (> 5 mm/h, rainfall type 1), the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere showed a negative correlation (r = -0.55, p < 0.05) with cumulative rainfall. The PM10 concentration increased the concentration of water-soluble ions (r = 0.25) and EC (r = 0.4), and decreased the pH (r = -0.7) of rainwater samples. However, for rainfall type 2 (< 5 mm/h), there was no negative correlation between the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere and cumulative rainfall and no statistically significant correlation between the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere and rainwater quality.
This paper investigates whether the use of Rainwater Harvesting Systems (RWHSs) to provide water for washing machines in Hong Kong residential buildings would be financially attractive. In such systems, rainwater is accumulated and reused for doing laundry, garden irrigation, flushing toilets, and even drinking. Thus, the analysis of RWHSs' financial feasibility is essential for construction projects. RainCycle is used to validate financial feasibility, considering particular circumstances and data relevant to the Hong Kong context. A range of different scenarios by adjusting three factors are evaluated: catchment area, water demand, and discount rate. It is suggested that $2,000m^2$ would be a suitable catchment area in a typical Hong Kong residential building and it is demonstrated how water demand and discount rate influence the financial performance of RWHSs. In particular, the financial performance of RWHSs is sensitive to discount rates. The results suggest that the RWH system would be worthwhile for buildings with a lower number of floors, but would barely achieve financial validation in Hong Kong's super high-rise residential buildings.
The design of rainwater storage system unit to manufacture its reservoir tank was tried, the simulation to predict of their structural strength was carried out. Rainwater storage system unit should be easy to their machinability, transport and assemble. Especially, their structure was able to secure the water storage space, withstand loads and easily response to pollution. Considering these various requirements, they have to Doria-pillar structure of the Roman architectural style because these designs could disperse the loads which are applied to them. Therefore, the six kinds of models possible were proposed. Several boundary conditions were given to each model. Their structural strength was predicted through the simulation on their stress and the displacement distribution to constant load. From the evaluated data, the structure which has a large pillar in the central of unit and four small pillars each corner was the best.
