Evaluation of the Applicability of the Poisson Cluster Rainfall Generation Model for Modeling Extreme Hydrological Events (극한수문사상의 모의를 위한 포아송 클러스터 강우생성모형의 적용성 평가)

  • This study evaluated the applicability of the Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (MBLRP) rainfall generation model for modeling extreme rainfalls and floods in Korean Peninsula. Firstly, using the ISPSO (Isolated Species Particle Swarm Optimization) method, the parameters of the MBLRP model were estimated at the 61 ASOS (Automatic Surface Observation System) rain gauges located across Korean Peninsula. Then, the synthetic rainfall time series with the length of 100 years were generated using the MBLRP model for each of the rain gauges. Finally, design rainfalls and design floods with various recurrence intervals were estimated based on the generated synthetic rainfall time series, which were compared to the values based on the observed rainfall time series. The results of the comparison indicate that the design rainfalls based on the synthetic rainfall time series were smaller than the ones based on the observation by 20% to 42%. The amount of underestimation increased with the increase of return period. In case of the design floods, the degree of underestimation was 31% to 50%, which increases along with the return period of flood and the curve number of basin.

On Ground-Truth Designs of Radar Rainfall Using Rain Gauge Rainfall (우량계 강우를 이용한 레이더 강우의 Ground-Truth 방법 검토)

  • This study theoretically compared three possible methods for the ground-truth, that is three ground-truth designs of radar rainfall using the rain gauge rainfall. Theoretical results derived are first applied to the rainfall field generated by the Waymire-Gupta-Rodriguez Iturbe(WGR) model, and then to the Mt. Gwanak radar data using the rain gauge data from MOCT within the radar range of observation. Overall application results were found to be similar to those from theoretical studies, also those from the application to the WGR rainfall field. In conclusion, the ground-truth design using only positive(+) rainfalls from both radar and rain gauges causes serious design bias to be inappropriate as a ground-truth design.

Analysis on Spatial Variability of Rainfall in a Small Area (소규모 지역에 대한 강우의 공간변화도 분석)

  • This study deployed six rain gauges in a small area for a dense network observing rainfall and analyzed the spatial variability of rainfall. They were arranged in a $2{\times}3$ rectangular grid with equal space of 60 m. The rainfall measurements from five gauges were analyzed during the period of 50 days because one was seriously affected by alien substance. The maximum difference in cumulative rainfall from them is approximately 38.5 mm. The correlation coefficients from hourly rainfall time series differ from each other while daily rainfall coincide. The coefficient of variation in hourly rainfall varies up to 224% and that in daily rainfall up to 91%. The results from uncertainty analysis show that with only four rain gauges areal mean rainfall cannot be estimated over 95% accuracy. For reliable flood prediction and effective water management it is required to develop a new technique for the estimation of areal rainfall.

Design of Optimal Hop Length for Fixed Radio Relay Links above 20GHz in Korea (20GHz 이상 대역에서의 국내 고정 무선중계 시스템의 최적 경로길이 설계)

  • The frequency band above 20GHz is the great radio resource which has not been used. But the attenuation by atmosphere is so large that the radio systems using this frequency band must have shorter hops. There are few studies of optimal hop length for these millimetric wave radio links in Korea. In this paper we analyzed the millimetric wave propagation characteristics in atmosphere and estimated rain attenuation which have a great effect on hop length. Furthermore, we present a rainfall rate(mm/h) of the cities including Seoul and Pusan using the data collected by several rainfall gauges. This paper presents a method of obtaining the optimum hop length for millimer wave radio links based on the rain rate date.

A preliminary assessment of high-spatial-resolution satellite rainfall estimation from SAR Sentinel-1 over the central region of South Korea (한반도 중부지역에서의 SAR Sentinel-1 위성강우량 추정에 관한 예비평가)

  • Reliable terrestrial rainfall observations from satellites at finer spatial resolution are essential for urban hydrological and microscale agricultural demands. Although various traditional "top-down" approach-based satellite rainfall products were widely used, they are limited in spatial resolution. This study aims to assess the potential of a novel "bottom-up" approach for rainfall estimation, the parameterized SM2RAIN model, applied to the C-band SAR Sentinel-1 satellite data (SM2RAIN-S1), to generate high-spatial-resolution terrestrial rainfall estimates (0.01° grid/6-day) over Central South Korea. Its performance was evaluated for both spatial and temporal variability using the respective rainfall data from a conventional reanalysis product and rain gauge network for a 1-year period over two different sub-regions in Central South Korea-the mixed forest-dominated, middle sub-region and cropland-dominated, west coast sub-region. Evaluation results indicated that the SM2RAIN-S1 product can capture general rainfall patterns in Central South Korea, and hold potential for high-spatial-resolution rainfall measurement over the local scale with different land covers, while less biased rainfall estimates against rain gauge observations were provided. Moreover, the SM2RAIN-S1 rainfall product was better in mixed forests considering the Pearson's correlation coefficient (R = 0.69), implying the suitability of 6-day SM2RAIN-S1 data in capturing the temporal dynamics of soil moisture and rainfall in mixed forests. However, in terms of RMSE and Bias, better performance was obtained with the SM2RAIN-S1 rainfall product over croplands rather than mixed forests, indicating that larger errors induced by high evapotranspiration losses (especially in mixed forests) need to be included in further improvement of the SM2RAIN.

  • 본 연구에서는 현재 건설교통부에서 설치 및 운영 중에 있는 소형강우레이더의 최적화를 위해서 지상의 강우관측소 자료와 레이더 측정 자료의 실시간 보정방법을 이용하여 강우강도를 추정하였다. 본 연구에서 이용된 실시간 Z-R 관계식 적용으로 인한 강우강도 개선 정도를 파악하기 위해서 통상 일률적으로 적용되고 있는 $Z=200R^{1.6}$에 의한 강우강도 결과와 비교.분석하였으며, 지상의 강우관측소 실측 강우량과 비교함으로써 적용성을 보였다. 본 연구에서 이용된 보정방법은 강우보정에 소요되는 시간이 짧아 실시간 적용이 가능하며, 레이더 강우량의 정확한 추정으로 유역에서의 향상된 면적강우량 산출이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

  • A rainfall simulation and forecasting technique that can generate daily rainfall sequences conditional on multi-model ensemble GCMs is developed and applied to data in Korea for the major rainy season. The GCM forecasts are provided by APEC climate center. A Weather State Based Downscaling Model (WSDM) is used to map teleconnections from ocean-atmosphere data or key state variables from numerical integrations of Ocean-Atmosphere General Circulation Models to simulate daily sequences at multiple rain gauges. The method presented is general and is applied to the wet season which is JJA(June-July-August) data in Korea. The sequences of weather states identified by the EM algorithm are shown to correspond to dominant synoptic-scale features of rainfall generating mechanisms. Application of the methodology to seasonal rainfall forecasts using empirical teleconnections and GCM derived climate forecast are discussed.

  • 강우량계는 기상관측 장비중 비가 온 양을 측정하기 위한 장비로 전도형, 저수형, 중량형, 로드셀형 등 다양한 종류의 강우량계가 있다. 전도형 우량계의 경우 단순한 측정방법 및 유지보수의 용이성, 접점방식에 의한 신호의 디지털화 적용성이 우수하기 때문에 가장 널리 사용되고 있다. 전도형 우량계는 분해능에 따라 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.5mm, 그리고 1.0mm급으로 분류며, 저수지 관리를 위해 사용되고 있는 우량계는 1.0mm 급을 주로 사용하고 있으며, 보다 정밀하게 측정하기 위하여 0.5mm 급 우량계도 사용하고 있다. 이러한 전도형 우량계의 정확도를 검정하기 위한 방법으로 수자원연구원에 질량측정에 의한 검 교정을 할 수 있는 표준교정시스템이 구축되어 있으며, 이 시스템을 이용하여 0.5mm 및 1.0mm 전도형 우량계에 대하여 강우강도를 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200 mm/h로 가변하면서 강우강도의 변화에 따른 분해능이 다른 우량계의 오차특성을 비교 분석하고자 한다.

Development of a Model Combining Covariance Matrices Derived from Spatial and Temporal Data to Estimate Missing Rainfall Data (공간 데이터와 시계열 데이터로부터 유도된 공분산행렬을 결합한 강수량 결측값 추정 모형)

  • This paper proposed a new method for estimating missing values in time series rainfall data. The proposed method integrated the two most widely used estimation methods, general linear model(GLM) and ordinary kriging(OK), by taking a weighted average of covariance matrices derived from each of the two methods. The proposed method was cross-validated using daily rainfall data at thirteen rain gauges in the Hyeong-san River basin. The goodness-of-fit of the proposed method was higher than those of GLM and OK, which can be attributed to the weighting algorithm that was designed to minimize errors caused by violations of assumptions of the two existing methods. This result suggests that the proposed method is more accurate in missing values in time series rainfall data, especially in a region where the assumptions of existing methods are not met, i.e., rainfall varies by season and topography is heterogeneous.

  • 수문관측용으로 사용되는 우설량계는 측정의 편의성과 강인성의 장점 때문에 대부분 전도형 우설량계를 사용하고 있으며, 하절기에는 강우량을 측정하고 동절기에는 강설량을 측정할 수 있도록 구성되어 있다. 동절기에 강설량을 측정하기 위하여 자동 히팅하는 장치가 포함되어 있어, 눈이 생성될 수 있는 온도조건에서 히터가 작동되고 적정온도가 되면 히터의 동작을 멈출 수 있도록 히터 및 온도센서가 구성되어 있다. 우설량계의 유지.관리 측면에서 주기적으로 동작상태 등을 점검하고 있으며, 히팅장치도 점검의 대상이다. 그러나 히팅장치의 동작 유무를 판단하는 방법에 있어서 효율적인 방법을 사용하고 있지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 평상시에 우설량계 점검시 온도센서에 의해 감지되는 가변적인 온도신호에 따라 히터가 제대로 작동되는지의 여부를 판단하기 위하여, 사전에 점검하기 용이하도록 우설량계 히터 동작시험 장치를 개발하였으며, 이 장치에 대한 동작특성을 분석하고자 한다.
