  • The objective of this paper is to identify the problems of Korean inland transportation system and suggest the improvement plan for reducing the export logistics cost. The results are as follows: (1) Expansion of logistics hub facilities : Logistics hub facilities- integrated freight terminal and ICD, etc. can shorten the empty leg and reduce the logistics cost. (2) Design for CVO(Commercial Vehicle Operations) : CVO has various functions that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of freight transportation. (3) Rationalization of freight transportation industry : In particular, the deregulation of the motor freight industry and the privatization of the railway industry induce the competition among their firms and undercut the transportation rates in the long run. (4) Use of third-party logistics : The benefits of TPL are system reliability, improved customer service, and more efficient cost performance.

  • The object of this study is to ensure the stability of flat freight cars using vibration performance test and static load test of body structures. We examined the flat car though static load test and dynamic characteristics analysis related traveling stability and vibration performance. In the results of static load test of body structures for flat car, all structures satisfied allowable stress of materials. The vibration performance test was satisfied with allowable standards. Although flat car exceed speed a little at some speed interval, it was estimated that the cause was not cars but rail.

  • In-site Continuous Method to improve the dynamic performance of railway plater girder bridge was developed. In this study, the In-site Continuous Method in the existing railway plate girder bridge was applied. Comparison of the results obtained from the field experiment were presented. The reductions in vertical acceleration were shown to approximately 24.8%, 45.4% and 27.5% in case of the freight train, passenger train and express tilting train, respectively. The reductions of lateral acceleration were shown to approx. 31%, 39% and 15% in the previous case. In the vertical displacement, the reductions were shown to approx. 20%, 13% and 12.6%, respectively. Through this method, we expect the problem of the restriction in speed up of train to be solve.

  • In tread braking of freight cars, braking force is produced by the friction between the wheel and the braking shoe. Friction coefficients such as the brake power, weight variation and brake shoe types should be sensitively treated as the design parameters. The conditions of the car, empty and weighted, should also be taken into consideration in brake force design and the control of brake force has some limitations in terms of the brake system design so that the brake materials selection should be considered as important measures to solve that difficulties. Friction characteristics of brake materials should remain within the range of maximum and minimum value and the friction performance should remain stable regardless of braking time and temperature. This study presented an experimental evaluation method to secure optimum braking performance by keeping safe braking effect and braking distance by the friction coefficient of the brake shoe of the freight cars.

  • The usual distinction made in the literature is between decision facilitating and decision influencing. Because time only runs one way, both uses of cost information are problematic. In the first instance, a cost description (measurement or estimate) is provided to decision makers before a decision is made. Unfortunately, costs can only be measured after the fact. This means that cost analysts must estimate the costs of the alternatives under consideration. In some cases, measured cost is a reliable predictor of future costs; in other cases it is not. Regardless of its reliability, however, it is all we have or can have. Consequently, managers must be informed as to how their performance will be measured and how measured performance will affect outcomes they care about -- promotion, pay, esteem, etc. I will outline the basic approaches to cost measurement and then show how cost measures can be used to facilitate and to influence decisions of the railway industry.

  • In April 1, 2004, age of high-speed railway was opened to korea railroad. The railroad is a means of large transportation which has many talents such as a safety and a regularity. That is a results from various confidential performance tests and evaluations of the system. The railroad system consist of various subsystems - vehicle, power supply, signal, communications, track structures, operations, etc. Among them, as an item of safety evaluation there is a measurement of wheel/rail farce, so called a measurement of derailment coefficient. This is a very important item because a derailment of a train will bring about a big accident. Especially it is more important in high speed rail of which operation speed is over two times as fast as existing rail. In this paper, examined speed elevation possibility use the korean style high speed railway vehicle for reduce the running time of high-speed railway between high speed line and conventional line.

  • New locomotives 8100 & series 8200, based on the BR152 of German railway are suitable for heavy-duty freight traffic as well as for passenger transport. This electric locomotive had applied by trial petition way and 57 car is operating in mainline and industrial line until now. As matter of fact, this has a purpose to help designing and manufacturing the new electric locomotive in these day when almost all the line is changing into the electric fire line. This thesis has a purpose to check whether the actual simulation value properly apply and meet the designing value, comparing the result of the simulation for the performance of developed locomotive with the result of the type test which can be proceed in actual locomotive in korea (evaluating both the design value and the performance of the real locomotive).

Embodied Energy and $CO_2$ Emissions Evaluation for Freight Transport

  • This study aim at demonstrating the environmental performance of freight transport of the rail and road mode through an indicator of embodied energy and $CO_2$ emissions. Using the concept of LCA, the scope of evaluation includes energy production, supply chain activity and operation. The results of embodied energy and $CO_2$ emissions are normalized by means of traffic volume. The results shown that embodied $CO_2$ emissions road mode is 607.07 $gCO_2-eq./tkm$ and 284.67 $gCO_2-eq./tkm$ for road and rail mode, respectively. This number reveals that road mode is 2.1 times larger than rail mode. The results also indicate that the main contribution of $CO_2$ emission from road mode is in the operation stage, which accounts for 70%; however, it is the construction and supply chain stage that accounts for over 50% of the emission of rail mode.

  • Due to the rapid increase in demand for transportation of human and freight in modern railway systems, the CBTC system has been proposed, which is the solution for improvement of the line capacity that has been limited by the conventional track circuit based train control system. In the CBTC system, higher reliability of the communication system should be guaranteed for the safety of passengers and trains. However, due to the inherent characteristics of the wireless channel environment, performance degradations are inevitable. The diversity techniques can increase the reliability of data transmission using multiple antennas. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the STBC in the railway channel environment. Rician fading model is used for the viaduct scenarios which take important roles in the railway system. Also, considered is the Doppler effect which is an important factor in the mobile communication system. Simulations are performed to analyze the performance of the STBC in various channel environments. Results show that the performance degradation due to the phase error in viaduct scenarios is independent of the diversity order but is affected by the constellation of the modulation.

  • This paper presents the results of vehicle dynamics simulation for development of single axle bogie for freight vehicle. Those results consists of hunting stability, ride comfort and curving performance such as derailment ratio, unloading ratio. Dynamic behaviors of vehicle having single axle bogie is carried out using the multi-body dynamics simulation program(VAMPIRE). The results of analysis meet the criteria proposed by Korean National Railroad(KNR) and Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI).
