  • In enclosed areas such as railway tunnels, the heat and smoke generated by a fire can pose a tremendous risk to the life of passengers. To prevent or mitigate such scenarios, fire detectors are installed for early fire detection. This numerical study is preformed for establishing the method of detecting performance of fire detectors installed on railway tunnels. Numerical analysis are conducted using the fire dynamics simulator, developed by the NIST. The temperature of the tunnel walls is determined using the assumed exterior structure of the tunnel. In addition, the detection times of detectors installed at different locations in the tunnel are obtained for different sizes of the fire source, and the results are compared and analyzed.

  • This study focuses on the influence of tractive forces on the self-stability of a bicycle. The eigen-value analysis of the self-stability of a passive rider control linear bicycle model can be used to analyze the self-stability. A linear bicycle model with front and rear driving forces is developed. The influence of tractive forces on the self-stability is identified by using the developed model. A nonlinear multi-body bicycle model is used to confirm the results of the linear analysis.

  • In recent years, mechanical systems such as high speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of a constrained mechanical system moving on a flexible beam structure, is proposed. Various supporting conditions for the foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structure. The elastic structure is assumed to be a non-uniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with a proportional damping effect. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion is derived using the multi-body dynamics theory and the finite element method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using the generalized coordinate partitioning method and predictor-corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

  • Recently, mechanical systems such as a high-speed vehicles and railway trains moving on flexible beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. Using the general approach proposed in the first part of this paper, it is possible to predict motion of the constrained mechanical system and the elastic structure, with various kinds of foundation supporting conditions. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion derived from both multibody dynamics theory and finite element method can be analyzed numerically using a generalized coordinate partitioning algorithm. To verify the validity of this approach, results from the simply supported elastic beam subjected to a moving load are compared with the exact solution from a reference. Finally, parametric study is conducted for a moving vehicle model on a simply supported 3-span bridge.

  • The pressure transient inside the passenger cabin of high-speed train has been simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) based on the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation. The pressure change inside a train have been calculated using first order difference approximation based on a linear equation between the pressure change ratio inside a train and the pressure difference of inside and outside of the train. The numerical results have been assessed for the KTX train passing through a 9km long tunnel of Wonju-Kangneung line at the speed of 250km/h assuming that the train is satisfying the train specification for airtightness required by the regulation.

  • Research interest on flexible body dynamics, has been increased recently. The major application areas are the auto-mobile, train, and heavy machinery. This paper attempted the dynamic analysis for the variable-gauge wheelset with a flexible body, to better understand the dynamic characteristics of the variable-gauge wheelset. In order to achieve this goal, a 3D-Virtual Mock-up model was built. The tendency of the stress and deformation for the flexible lever was investigated through component mode synthesis, contact mechanics and flexible body dynamics. This study is a pioneering work for the development of Korean type variable-gauge wheelset.

  • Studied in this paper was the vehicle dynamics simulation for development of single axle bogie using the multi-body dynamics simulation program(VAMPIRE). Single axle bogie vehicle is to the crew of freight vehicle. Method of analysis for dynamic behaviors of vehicle having single axle bogie was carried by UIC(International Union of Railways) code 518 and results of analysis were presented in terms of the hunting stability and the derailment ratio and the sum of wheel/rail lateral force. The results of analysis meet the criteria proposed by UIC.

  • Maglev vehicles, which are levitated and propelled by electromagnets, often run on elevated guideways comprised of steel, aluminum and concrete. Therefore, an analysis .of the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway is needed in the design of the critical speed, ride, controller design and weight reduction of the guideway. This study proposes a dynamic interaction simulation technique using a flexible beam model based on multi-body dynamics. The vehicle and the elevated guideway are represented as a multi-body dynamics model and a two-dimensional flexible beam, respectively. The proposed model was applied to an urban transit Maglev vehicle, UTM01, which is undergoing test drive. As a result of the proposed method, we concluded that it is possible to analyze the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway.
