  • It is suggested that the service life of the continuous welded rail(CWR) is estimated by the relationship between the rail surface irregularity according to the accumulated passing tonnage and bending fatigue of welded part in CWR. In this study, based on the results of bending fatigue tests of rail and results of measuring tests in situ of rail bending stress, this study estimated the bending fatigue life of welded rail in concrete track, adopting a Haibach's rule. The bending fatigue life of CWR considered the rail surface irregularity, train speed and the S-N curve by types of rail welding. In addition, this study estimated it for the fracture probability 1%, 0.1%, 0.01%. Therefore, this study proposed bending fatigue life of CWR in concrete track.

  • The method of utilizing the strain and vibration values of rails is primarily used to diagnose the condition of wheels and railroad facilities. The dynamic load is measured under the assumption that the strain of the rail and the load of the railroad vehicle are proportional. Wheel condition is measured under the assumption that the magnitude of the defect and the magnitude of the rail vibration are proportional. However, environmental factors affecting the strain and vibration of the rail such as vehicle speed, wheel load, climate, and track conditions are not reflected, many errors occur depending on the measurement conditions. In this study, the effect of track distortion, which is a major indicator of the track condition among the environmental factors that affect the strain and vibration of the rail, on the strain and vibration of the rail, was examined through dynamic simulation. As a measure to reduce the measurement deviation, the effect of securing additional measurement points was analyzed.

  • When vehicle travelling along the track which has irregularity such as vertical profile, dynamic forces arise at the Wheel/Rail contact patch by wheel/rail interaction. In particular short wavelength irregularities on dipped joint and small stiffness of connecting rail bring about intense wheel/rail dynamic effects at higher speed. In the paper, a new model for dipped joint rail is developed to study dynamic behavior of track. A cusp behavior on dipped joint was defined by its amplitude and decay factor, which was presented by FRA track classes. The result of case study are presented, which show wheel rail contact force in each track classes, train operation speed and bending flexible rigidity ratio of fishplates which are connecting the rail.

  • The dynamic design process for the articulated bogie of light rail vehicle(LRV) was studied to design a primary and secondary suspension elements. Suspension stiffness and damping is selected on the basis of the ride quality and suspension stroke trade-off. LRV was modeled as a 2 d.o.f linear system for the design of vertical suspension characteristics and a 4 d.o.f linear system for the design of lateral suspension characteristics. FRA's class-4-track irregularity was used for the exciting disturbance on track. The optimum value of primary and secondary suspension characteristics was determined using this design process.

  • In this study, proposed is the methodology to determine the upper limit for stiffness of rail pad for the ballasted and concrete track in high-speed railway in the viewpoint of running safety, considering the dynamic characteristics of train and track and the operation environment. For the track irregularity, one of the most important input parameters for traintrack interaction analysis, the reference vertical track irregularity PSDs(power spectral densities) for the ballasted and concrete track in a wide range of frequencies were proposed based on those presented in France and Germany and that obtained from the measured data at Kyeong-Bu 1st phase high-speed railway line. Using these reference PSD models, the input data for the vertical track irregularity data were regenerated by random generation process, and then, the wheel load reduction rates according to the stiffness of the rail pads have been calculated by the train-track interaction analysis technique. Finally, by comparing the wheel load reduction rates calculated with the derailment criteria prescribed in the Korean standards for railway vehicle safety criteria, the upper limits for the stiffness of rail pad have been proposed.

  • This study concerned on the critical speed due to hunting and snake motion train to ensure the stability. First, the critical speed was calculated by using a numerical model, and calculated the critical speed of the vehicle through the simulation with the use of ADAMS/RAII. Also, the snake motion was confirmed through a modal analysis and running simulation. The calculated results, show that the rail irregularity becomes the influential factors of the stability since it is the direct source of excitation of the vehicle.

  • Studied in this paper was the lateral displacement of railway vehicle using the multi-body dynamic simulation program (VAMPIRE) and the BASS 501. The lateral displacement of railway vehicle is occurred by thc clearance between wheel flange and rail, the track irregularity, the property of each suspension of vehicle and the cant etc. The results of analysis shown that Vehicle is not interfere with subway platform in any conditions namely the tare and full load condition, the wheel. wear condition and the stationary and running of vehicle.

  • Ballasted track is under the circumstance of repetition of deterioration and recovery. Track deterioration is presented as track irregularity or settlement, and dynamic force subjected to track is one of major cause of the deterioration. The dynamic force is determined from the dynamic interaction between track and vehicle. Rail-pad stiffness is one of the factor affects track dynamic property. In this study, the relationship between rail-pad stiffness and track settlement was investigated. Dynamic forces according to various rail-pad stiffness was obtained from the dynamic vehicle-track interaction analysis using DARTS-NL. Track settlement was calculated by substitution the dynamic forces into various formulas for track settlement. From the result of analysis, it was known that the track settlement is increased about 6% when the rail-pad stiffness rise about twice. And this result leads that there is only a little relationship between rail-pad stiffness and track settlement.

  • Rail support failure is inevitably subjected to track geometric deformations. Due to the randomness and evolvements of track irregularities, it is naturally a hard work to grasp the trajectories of dynamic responses of railway systems. This work studies the influence of rail fastener failure on dynamic behaviours of wheel/rail interactions and the railway tracks by jointly considering the effects of track random irregularities. The failure of rail fastener is simulated by setting the stiffness and damping of rail fasteners to be zeroes in the compiled vehicle-track coupled model. While track random irregularities will be transformed from the PSD functions using a developed probabilistic method. The novelty of this work lays on providing a method to completely reveal the possible responses of railway systems under jointly excitation of track random irregularities and rail support failure. The numerical results show that rail fastener failure has a great influence on both the wheel/rail interactions and the track vibrations if the number of rail fastener failure is over three. Besides, the full views of time-dependent amplitudes and probabilities of dynamic indices can be clearly presented against different failing status.

  • Korean Train Express (KTX) has opened to commercial traffic since 2004 at maximum speed 300km/h. As the speed of the train becomes higher, the conditions of the rail affect the behavior of the running train. To secure the safety and reliability of high speed railway, it is necessary to inspect rail irregularities and to maintain the rail regularly. The authors designed the high speed rain measurement system over 300km/h. And we installed the system to Korea High-speed Railway (HSR 350x). In this paper, we introduce the high speed rail measurement system for HSR 350x and show verification of the performance of the system through test runs.
