  • In this study, three types of large scale multi-tasking machine tools together with core technologies involved have been developed and introduced; a multi-tasking machine tool for large scale marine engine crankshafts, a multi-tasking vertical lathe for windmill parts, and a large scale 5-axis machine tool of gantry type. Several special purpose devices has been necessarily developed for the purpose of handling and machining big and heavy workpieces accurately, such as PTD (Pin Turning Device) with revolving ring spindle for machining eccentric crankshaft pins, hydrostatic rotary table and steady rest for supporting and resting heavy workpieces, and 2-axis automatic swiveling head for high-quality free surface machining. Core technologies have been also developed and adopted on their detail design stage; 1) structural design optimization with FEM structural analysis, 2) theoretical hydrostatic analysis for the PTD and rotary table bearings, 3) box-in-box type cross-rail and octagonal ram design to secure machine rigidity and accuracy, 4) constant spindle rpm control against gravitational torque due to unbalanced workpiece.

  • When the rolling stocks run on the curve, the external rail has to be lifted to a certain level to balance the centrifugal force acting on the train body. Under such a situation, passengers may feel uncomfortable, and the slanted vehicle has the potential overturning risks at high speed. This paper conducted a wind tunnel test in an annular wind tunnel with φ=3.2 m based on a 1/20th scaled high-speed train (HST) model. The sensitivity of Reynolds effects ranging from Re = 0.37×106 to Re = 1.45×106 was tested based on the incoming wind from U=30 m/s to U=113 m/s. The wind speed covers the range from incompressible to compressible. The impact of roll angle ranging from γ=0° to γ=4° on train aerodynamics was tested. In addition, the boundary layer development was also analyzed under different wind speeds. The results indicate that drag and lift aerodynamic coefficients gradually stabilized and converged over U=70 m/s, which could be regeared as the self-similarity region. Similarly, the thickness of the boundary layer on the floor gradually decreased with the wind speed increase, and little changed over U=80 m/s. The rolling moment of the head and tail cars increased with the roll angle from γ=0° to γ=4°. However, the potential overturning risks of the head car are higher than the tail car with the increase of the roll angle. This study is significant in providing a reference for the overturning assessment of HST.

  • Future emission legislation requirements especially the need for CO$_2$ reduction lead to more complex powertrain concepts with an increasing number of independent parameters to be calibrated. For gasoline engines concepts with variable valve timing, direct injection or variable charge motion are in development or already on production. Diesel engines with common rail systems offer a wide range of new injection strategies, the application of new exhaust aftertreatment systems leads to additional complexity. Furthermore a clear trend to highly sophisticated transmission concepts requires a perfect interaction of all powertrain components. While the higher complexity requires increasing test and development effort, the development duration is reduced significantly. Consequently, the potential of such systems cannot be fully utilised by traditional development and calibration approaches within the given timeframe. By introduction of intelligent methodologies f3r the calibration of modem powertrains the development becomes more efficient, faster and better in quality. However, even with standardised and automated calibration methods a differentiated brand-specific powertrain character has to be maintained comparable to a "handmade" calibration performed by highly experienced experts.

  • Automatic train control systems are divided into ATC, ATP and ATS systems etc. The ATP and ATS systems offer discontinuous information for train control. While the ATC systems provide continueous information for train control. There is a method for offering continuous information by AF track circuits. Magnetic fields are formed by current through rails in the AF track circuit systems. So, the continuous information is received by the magnetic fields on a on-board antenna. Coating materials on rails are researched to decrease defects such as head check, shelling, corrugation, squats and so on in Germany. Currently, a coating method of rail construction is proposed by using the ceramics in Korea. When deciding physical characteristic of ceramics, researches are required about variation of flux density by the ceramics. In case that the flux density is much lower than existing value, the information for train control is not transmitted to the on-board antenna. In this paper, inductance on rails is calculated and a model is presented about variation of the magnetic field intensity in the AF track circuit. Standard permeability of ceramics is proposed by analyzing the variation of magnetic field intensity. It is demonstrated by using Maxwell and Matlab program.

  • The purpose of this study is the experimental and numerical investigation on the DME spray characteristics in the combustion chamber according to the injection timing in a common-rail injection system. The visualization system consisted of the high speed camera with metal halide lamp was used for analyzing the spray characteristics such as spray development processes and the spray tip penetration in the free and in-cylinder spray under various ambient pressure. In order to observe the spray characteristics as a function of injection timing, the piston head shape of re-entrant type was created and the fuel injected into the chamber according to various distance between nozzle tip and piston wall in consideration of injection timing. Also, the spray and evaporation characteristics in the cylinder was calculated by using KlVA-3V code for simulating spray development process and spray tip penetration under real engine conditions. It was revealed that the high ambient pressure of 3 MPa was led to delay the spray development and evaporation of DME spray. In addition, injected sprays after BTDC 20 degrees entered the bowl region and the spray at the BTDC 30 degrees was divided into two regions. In the calculated results, the liquefied spray tip penetration and fuel evaporation were shorter and more increased as the injection timing was retarded, respectively.

  • The type approval system of the railway safety law, which was enforced in 2014, has been preferentially applied to the field of railway vehicles. The type approval system addresses railway vehicles and railway constituents. Unlike the previous system, it requires serial verification stages divided, in consecutive order, into verification of design compatibility and conformity and type test. These stages are in accord with international certification systems including TSI certification of the European commission. This study has been carried out to find and meet the design requirements for a coupler head, which is a part of the automatic coupler system; requirements were drawn from TSI and technical specifications that are subordinate to the domestic railway approval system. Through this study, it has been found that there exist 34 design requirements to acquire a complete coupler head. Among those requirements, 32 were verified by document inspection and two were able to be verified by performing FEA and gathering range analysis data.

  • In this study, field measurements were performed to analyze the effects of train types (AREX, AREX Express, KTX, KTX-Sancheon) and train speeds on the dynamic behavior of the direct fixation track structure on Yeongjong grand bridge by bridge type (truss bridge, suspension bridge). Based on field measurement results, the track impact factor and train running stability (coefficient of derailment, Rate of wheel load reduction, lateral displacement of rail head) are compared with domestic and foreign standards and regulations to influence the dynamic behavior of direct fixation track. As a result, the differences in the dynamic behavior of the direct fixation tracks by the type of bridges of Yeongjong bridge are not significant, but it was analyzed that these were more directly affected by the magnitude of the train load. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the reinforcement plan of the direct fixation track structure on Yeongjong grand bridge in consideration of the increase of the track impact factor and dynamic track force.

  • The construction of high speed railways and improvement projects of for conventional railways require straight railway lines of railway, which leads to an increase of bridge and tunnel construction. Transition zones in railways means that the track support stiffness is variedvaries in over short ranges. Sspecial attention is required in theose transition zones since because instability of train running in train and irregularities of track irregularities are can frequently occurred. Typical transition zones are between bridges and earthworks and between tunnels and earthworks. On In a transition zone, a bridge abutment transition zone has many problems in with various causes. In this paper, fundamental problems of bridge abutment transition zones is are analyzed to enhance the understanding about of bridge abutment transition zones. Suggestions for improving problems in the transition zones are proposed.
