  • 발암성 물질로 알려진 라돈($^{222}Rn$)은 원래 불활성기체로 자연계에 널리 존재하는 자연방사능으로 암석이나 토양 같은 지각물질에서 발생하는 우라늄($^{238}U$) 붕괴계열인 라듐($^{226}Ra$)의 붕괴과정에서 생성되는 방사성 가스이다. 라돈($^{222}R$)은 $\alpha$붕괴에 의하여 $^{218}Po$, $^{214}Po$등의 자핵종(Radon daughter)을 생성하며, 최종적으로 납($^{210}Pb$)으로 변한다 라돈이 폐에 흡입되면 붕괴하면서 $\alpha$방사선을 방출하는데, 이것이 인체의 세포를 죽이거나 염색체를 손상시킬 수 있으며, 폐암의 발생 위험률을 높이는 것으로 보고되었다.   • A number of investigators have reported formation of radiolytic ultrafine particles produced by the interaction of ionizing radiation with atmospheric trace gases. Previous studies have suggested that a very high localized concentration of the hydroxyl radical produced by the radiolysis of water can react with atmospheric trace gases such as $SO_2$ and produce lower vapor pressure compounds that can subsequently nucleate. To determine the trace gas and water vapor concentration dependence of the active, positively charged, first decayt product of radon (Po-218), a well-controlled radon chamber was used in this research. The mobility spectrum of the decay products in the range of $0.07-5.0cm^2/V\;sec$ from the radon chamber was measured using alpha track detector installed inside a specially-designed electrostatic spectrometer. Measurements were taken for different concentrations (0.5ppm to 5ppm) of $SO_2$ in Purified, Compressed air. A kinetics Study following the clustering of $SO_2$ around the $PoO_x^+$ ion in an excess of $SO_2$ for interpretation of the reaction processes was performed.

Diurnal and Seasonal Variations of the Radon Progeny Concentrations in the open Atmosphere and the Influence of Meteorological Parameters (대기중 라돈자핵종 농도의 일일 및 계절적 변화와 기상인자가 미치는 영향)

  • Continuous measurements of radon progeny concentrations in the open atmosphere and measurements of meteorological parameters were performed in Tajeon, using a continuous gross alpha/beta aerosol monitor and a weather measuring equipment between July 1999 and July 2000. These data were analyzed for half-hourly, daily, and seasonal variations. The distribution of daily averaged equilibrium equivalent radon concentration$(EEC_{Rn})$ had an arithmetic mean value of $11.3{\pm}5.86Bqm^{-3}$ with the coefficient of variation of about 50% and the geometric mean was $10.3Bqm^{-3}$. The $EEC_{Rn}$ varies between 0.83 and $43.3Bqm^{-3}$, depending on time of day and weather conditions. Half-hourly averaged data indicated a diurnal pattern with the outdoor $EEC_{Rn}$ reaching a maximum at sunrise and a minimum at sunset. The pattern of the seasonal variation of the $EEC_{Rn}$ in Taejon had a tendency of minimum concentration occurring in the summer(July) and maximum concentration occurring in the late autumn(November). But the seasonal variation of the $EEC_{Rn}$ is expect to vary greatly from place to place. The outdoor $EEC_{Rn}$ was highly dependent on the local climate features. Particularly the $EEC_{Rn}$an rapidly drops less than $5Bqm^{-3}$ in case of blowing heavily higher than wind speed of $6msec^{-1}$, reversely the days with more than $30Bqm^{-3}$ were at a calm weather condition with the wind speed of lower than $1msec^{-1}$.

Hydrogeochemical Characteristics and Natural Radionuclides in Groundwater for Drinking-water Supply in Korea (국내 음용지하수의 수리지화학 및 자연방사성물질 환경 특성)

  • A total of 247 samples were collected from groundwater being used for drinking-water supply, and hydrogeochemistry and radionuclide analysis were performed. In-situ analysis of groundwaters resulted in ranges of $13.7{\sim}25.1^{\circ}C$ for temperature, 5.9~8.5 for pH, 33~591 mV for Eh, $66{\sim}820{\mu}S/cm$ for EC, and 0.2~9.4 mg/L for DO. Major cation and anion concentrations of groundwaters were in ranges of 0.5~227.6 for Na, 1.0~279.3 for Ca, 0.0~9.3 for K, 0.1~100.1 for Mg, 0.0~3.3 for F, 0.9~779.1 for Cl, 0.3~120.4 for $SO_4$, 0.0~27.4 for $NO_3$-N, and 6~372 mg/L for $HCO_3$. Uranium-238 and radon-222 concentrations were detected in ranges of N.D-$131.1{\mu}g/L$ and 18-15,953 pCi/L, respectively. In case of some groundwaters exceeding USEPA MCL level ($30{\mu}g/L$) for uranium concentration, their pH ranged from 6.8 to 8.0 and Eh showed a relatively low value(86~199 mV) compared to other areas. Most groundwaters belonged to Ca-(Na)-$HCO_3$ type, and groundwaters of metamorphic rock exhibited the highest concentration of Na, Mg, Ca, Cl, $NO_3$-N, U, and those of plutonic rock showed the highest concentration of $HCO_3$, and Rn. Uranium and fluoride from granite areas did not show any correlation. However, uranium and bicarbonate displayed a positive relation of some areas in plutonic rocks($R^2$=0.3896).

International Trends for Radionuclides Management in Drinking water (선진 외국에서의 먹는물 중 방사성물질 관리동향)

  • The radionuclides in drinking water have been regulated in many countries. In USA, the regulation has been revised for over 30 years since radionuclides have been regulated under Safe Drinking Water Act(SDWA) from 1974. Today, USEPA is finalizing maximum contaminant level goal(MCLG) of zero for radionuclides, maximum contaminant level(MCL) and alternative maximum contaminant level(AMCL) of 300pCi/L and 4,000pCi/L for radon respectively, MCLs of $30{\mu}g/L$ for uranium, and MCLs of 5pCi/L for combined radium 226 and 228. In Canada, Maximum Acceptable Concentration(MAC) value for uranium is $20{\mu}g/L$. WHO revised the guideline value of uranium and radon to $15{\mu}g/L$ and 100Bq/L in september 2004, respectively. On this survey, it has been found that international regulations for radionuclides in drinking water have been established and improved steadily on the knowledge basis from the past decades' studies.

A Study on Risk Communication and Risk Perception in Environmental Problems (환경문제의 위해도 인식과 위해도 홍보 프로그램의 효과분석 -라돈과 다이옥신을 중심으로-)

  • Risk communication can be defined as the exchange of information about the nature, magnitude, significance, acceptability, and management of risk. The effect of risk communication on the perception and knowledge towards risk of environmental pollutants and it's related factors were investigated in this study. To investigate perception and knowledge of students and teachers towards risk of environmental pollutants, we conducted the survey using self-administrated questionnaire. The subjects were 574 for the first survey and 465 for the seconds survey from May to June, 2000. The main methods of transmission used in this study- through video tape, visual materials, question and answer, and participation in measuring pollutants - were not a one - way street. But an interactive process where information and opinions were exchanged among individuals, groups, and institutions. Environmental pollutants measured with participation of study subjects was Radon in the class room. The concentration of Radon was measured using E -PERM Device by installing it at each site for about 5 days. Subjects showed much interest in environmental pollution. Also, more than 98% of total subjects were perceived as Korea is seriously contaminated at present. By risk communication activity, risk perception of all subjects about Radon was increased, on the other hand, risk perception of Dioxin was decreased except for elementary student. Moreover, knowledge of all subjects about environmental risk was significantly increased (p =0.0001) and effort of reducing environmental pollution was more increased (p<0.05). There is need to further develop, refine, and integrate these approaches environmental risk communication study, there is an even more pressing need to accelerate the diffusion of environmental risk communication practice into government and organizations.

The Effect of Heterogeneous Preference on Non-market Valuation (가계의 이질적 선호가 비시장재 가치의 추정에 미치는 영향)

  • Non-market valuation studies tend to assume that individual households have homogeneous preferences for a non-market good to value. However, since the preferences for non-market goods, especially environmental goods are more likely to be heterogeneous by nature, it may be more appropriate to assume heterogeneous preferences for non-market goods, which may in turn may lead to reduced biases in the WTP estimation. This study investigate the extent to which individual households have heterogeneous preferences for reduced concentrations of radon, a radioactive indoor air pollutant, for road safety, and for nuclear power safety. We also analyze the effect of heterogeneity assumption on the results of model and WTP estimation. Using the choice experiments and mixed logit models, we found that allowing for heterogeneous preferences improved model fitness and that there existed heterogeneous preferences for both reduced radon concentration and road safety, albeit not for nuclear power safety. The mean WTP for reduced radon concentrations and road safety increased by factors of 2.44 and l.74 respectively with the models allowing for heterogeneous preferences.

  • 대기오염물질의 장거리 이동에 관한 인구는 자연적으로 발생하는 오염물질과 인위적으로 발생하는 오염물질을 추적할 수 있다. 자연적인 것으로는 황사의 발생, 이동 및 침전 등이 있고, 인위적인 것으로 입자상물질, sulphate의 연구사례가 있다(정용승 등 1991). 그러나 중국에서 발생된 이러한 대기오염물질은 서해를 넘어 이동하면서 화학적 성분이 변화하기 때문에 대기오염물질의 장거리 이동을 명확하게 설명할 수 없는 한계를 가지고 있다. (중략)
