Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and potential EDCs are mostly man-made, found in various materials such as pesticides, additives or contaminants in food, and personal care products. The high energy ionizing radiation has the ability to remove the EDCs with a very high degree of reliability and in a clean and efficient manner. The ionizing radiation interacts with EDCs both directly and indirectly. Direct interaction takes place with EDCs and the structure of EDCs is destroyed or changed. During indirect interaction, radiolysis products of water result in the formation of highly reactive intermediates which then react with the target molecules, culminating in structural changes. To confirm the radiation reduction of EDCs in industrial sludge, a pilot scale experiment up to 50 kGy of electron beam (EB) was conducted with samples from the textile dyeing industries. The experimental result showed the over 90% of reduction of Nonylphenol (NP) and Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at around 10 kGy of absorbed doses.
Natural lacquer was cured at room temperature at a relative humidity of 60% at $27^{\circ}C$ to obtain a lacquer film. Photolysis of lacquer was investigated by irradiating 1~75 kGy of gamma ray to this lacquer film. No significant changes were observed in the range of 1~10 kGy radiation. As the radiation doses were increased, the white spots were increased in the scanning electron microscope photographs. The increase of the white dots of the lacquer surface shows that the lacquer is degradation by radiation. As a result of IR spectral analysis of the lacquer surface with increasing irradiation dose, there was no significant change in $3,445cm^{-1}$ hydroxide group, $2,900cm^{-1}$ hydrocarbon group, and $993cm^{-1}$ triene group. However, the $1,745cm^{-1}$ carbonyl group was found to increase, and the $1,715cm^{-1}$ unsaturated hydrocarbon group and the $1,463cm^{-1}$ methylene group showed a tendency to decrease.
The thermal stability of nitric acid solutions after contact with non-irradiated and irradiated tributyl phosphate (TBP) and its solution in Isopar-M has been studied. It has been established that exothermic processes occur during heating due to the interaction of soluble radiolysis products and the decomposition of the extractant with nitric acid. Such processes can occur at temperatures below 100 ℃, but unlike a thermal explosion that occurs in seconds, they are longer in time and are accompanied by weak heat evolution. Their intensity depends on the composition of the extractant, the concentration of HNO3, and the volume ratio of the organic and aqueous phases. The presence of extractant degradation products in raffinates does not pose a risk of a rapid evolution of gaseous products during evaporation, however, the presence of reducing agents can significantly increase the intensity of the exothermic decomposition of raffinates.
A number of investigators have reported formation of radiolytic ultrafine particles produced by the interaction of ionizing radiation with atmospheric trace gases. Previous studies have suggested that a very high localized concentration of the hydroxyl radical produced by the radiolysis of water can react with atmospheric trace gases such as $SO_2$ and produce lower vapor pressure compounds that can subsequently nucleate. To determine the trace gas and water vapor concentration dependence of the active, positively charged, first decayt product of radon (Po-218), a well-controlled radon chamber was used in this research. The mobility spectrum of the decay products in the range of $0.07-5.0cm^2/V\;sec$ from the radon chamber was measured using alpha track detector installed inside a specially-designed electrostatic spectrometer. Measurements were taken for different concentrations (0.5ppm to 5ppm) of $SO_2$ in Purified, Compressed air. A kinetics Study following the clustering of $SO_2$ around the $PoO_x^+$ ion in an excess of $SO_2$ for interpretation of the reaction processes was performed.

In order to develope the in vitro short term screen-ing method for carcinogen, we studied a purification method for thymine glycol in oxidaized DNA. Thymine glycol (5,6-dihydroxy-5, 6-dihydrothymine) is the major stable radiolysis poduct in thymine by chemical oxidants and ionzing radiation and it is a useful biomarker among oxidized DNA adducts, related with carcinogenests. Standard thymine glycol was prepared by oxidation of 〔$^3$H〕 thymine with KMnO$_4$ followed by purification with HPLC-LSC system and it was assayed by TLC and gas chromatography-MSD. 〔$^3$H〕 DMA adducts was isolated from E. coli (wild type ) treated with oxidative agents such as benzo(a)pyrene, adriamycin, aflatoxin B$_1$ and KBrO$_3$. These oxidative agents generated free radicals in cells by oxidative metabolism. As a result, thymine glycol was produced in cultured E. coli by four chemicals. This result shows that this methodology should be useful tool in screening oxidative carcinogen.
In order to isolate carotenoid-hyperproducing yeast, low-dose gamma irradiation was used as means of mutagenesis. Phaffia rhodozyma was treated by gamma irradiation of less than 10 kGy, which is considered to be a wholesome irradiation condition established by the Food and Drug Administration. Through repeated rounds of gamma irradiation and visual screening, mutant 3A4-8 was obtained. It produced a $3,824{\mu}g$ carotenoid/g yeast, 69% higher content than $2,265{\mu}g/g$ yeast of the unirradiated one. This result indicates that low-dose gamma irradiation could be used as means of mutagenesis to obtain carotenoid-hyperproducing strain of Phaffia rhodozyma, since only carotenoid-hyperproducing yeast survived gamma irradiation by scavenging oxygen radicals generated by radiolysis of water.

Free radicals originate due to the radiolysis of cytoplasmic water with low "Linear Energy Transfer" (LET) radiations. Naringenin (Ng) is a natural antioxidative compound found in citrus fruits. This study revealed that Naringenin (Ng) reduced the radiation damage of critical organs by scavenging oxidative free radicals. In the study, Ng was orally administrated to rats daily for 7 consecutive days, prior to whole body exposure to gamma-rays. The scavenging efficacy was evaluated biochemically by measuring the concentration of cytotoxic byproducts and the activity of enzymes relevant to oxidative free radicals, after extracting the organs from the exposed rat. We observed increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, and decrease in the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the exposed control group. However, pretreatment with Ng significantly reduced the MDA concentration, and increased the activities of SOD and CAT, as compared to the control group, due to the free radical scavenging by Ng. The results indicate that Ng administration prior to irradiation could protect critical organs from radiation damage.

A novel synthetic route has been developed to prepare $\alpha$-cobalt hydroxide with intercalated nitrate anions. It was successfully synthesized by $\gamma$-ray irradiation under simple conditions, i.e., air atmosphere, without base. Under $\gamma$-ray irradiation, it leads to the formation of layered cobalt hydroxynitrate compounds which have small crystalline size and have the role of a generator of hydroxyl anion. Structural and morphological characterizations were performed by using power X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The component and thermal stability of the sample were respectively measured by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal analyses, including thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA).
An acute ethanol load(50mmol/kg , i.p) resulted in an increase in peroxidation and a decrease in the levels of $\alpha$-tocopherol and ascorbate in rat cerebellum. Pretreatement with allopurinol(146$\mu$mol/kg, i.p) prevented the ethnol-induced increment in lipid peroxidation and decrease in $\alpha$-tocopherol content. However, the decrease of ascorbate was of greater magnitude when allopurinol was associated with ethanol. These results suggested that allopurinol. besides its action as a radical scavenger and xanthine oxidase inhibitor, might favor the regeneration of $\alpha$-tocopherol antioxidant acitviity was studied using ${\gamma}$-radiolysis in aerated ethanolic solutions. Even though allopurinol did not react by itself with $\alpha$-hydroxyethyl-peroxyl radicals [H3C-CH(OH)OO] , it enhance the $\alpha$-hydroxyethyl-peroxyl radical scavenging properties of $\alpha$tocopherol. The regeneration of $\alpha$-tocopherol from the $\alpha$-hydroxyethyl-peroxyl radical scavenging properties of $\alpha$-tocophero. The regeneration of $\alpha$-tocopherol from the $\alpha$-tocopherol radical by ascorbate remained as efficient in the presence of allopurinol as in its absence. The effects of allopurinol on the Vitamin E oxidation-reduction mechanism could be involoved in the beneficial effectof allopurinol on the biological cellular damages linked to free radical reactions.

Effects of gamma irradiation onf the activity and the properties(amino acid compositions, in vitro digestibility and SDS-PAGE pattern) of proteolytic enzymes were investigated. The proteolytic activity of soluble human serine protease, enzyme in kiwi and pineapple decreased 10% and 30~65% by 5 kGy and 30 kGy, respectively. In dried pancreatin and lysozyme, the proteolytic and antimicrobial activities decreased 6~14% and 10~20% by 5kGy and 40kGy, respectively. The analysis of above 10kGy-irradiated soluble human serine protease by SDS-PAGE revealed radiolysis of the enzyme into protein or peptides of lower molecular weights. The irradiation of skim milk, hammastein casein, and lysozyme up to 40kGy had no deleterious effect on either the in vitro digestibility or amino acid compositions.
