Numerical study on the gaseous radioactive pollutant dispersion in urban area from the upstream wind: Impact of the urban morphology

  • The radioactive pollutant could migrate to the downstream urban area under the action of atmospheric dispersion due to the turbulent mixing under actual pollution accidents. A scenario in which radioactive contaminants from the upstream (for example, a nearshore nuclear power plant accident) migrates to the downstream urban blocks have been considered in this study. Numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are then conducted to investigate the effects of the urban morphology (building packing density and layout) on the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive pollutants in this scenario. The building packing density and structure can significantly affect urban areas' mean flow pattern and the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The flow pattern and the TKE distribution influence the radioactive pollution dispersion. It is found that the radioactive pollution at the urban canyons is significantly affected by the vertical transport at the canyon. A comparison of the distributions of radioactive and traditional non-radioactive pollutants is also provided.

  • Environmental pollution is common problem of the present world that is intimately related to the future survival of human beings. The problems of environmental pollution originate from the pursuit of benefit by enterprises, insufficient countermeasure of government and ignorant life style of the people. Health hazards due to environmental pollution have characteristics of irreversibility, difficulty in measurement and ineffectiveness of personal prevention. Objects of this article are to review the various aspects of environmental pollution, to outline the present status of environmental pollution and strategy to control environmental pollution in Korea. In the first part of this article, causes of environmental pollution are presented. International relationships, world-wide status of environmental pollution and health hazards due to environmental pollution are briefly reviewed. In the second part, present status of air, water, soil and ocean pollution in Korea is presented. Pollution by radioactive materials, noise, vibrations, odor, wastes and chemicals is reviewed. Climate changes related to environmental poisoning, problems of workplace environment, pesticide and defoliants are also reviewed. Finally, control measures for environmental pollution including the role of government are reviewed.

  • 후쿠시마 원전 사고가 일어난 지 10년이 지난 지금까지도 일본은 매일 생성되는 원전 오염수 문제를 해결하지 못하고 있다. 그들은 오염수 저장탱크가 한계에 다다를 것으로 예상되자, 안전성에 관한 한국의 우려에도 일방적으로 원전 오염수를 해양에 방출하기로 했다. 문제는 한국의 대응에도 불구하고, 여전히 일본이 『유엔해양법협약』상 의무를 성실히 이행하지 않은 채 해양 방출을 준비하고 있다는 데 있다. 원전 오염수의 방사성물질로 인한 해양오염은 물론, 한국의 해양주권 침탈까지도 우려되는 상황이다. 특히 한번 환경이 오염되기 시작하면 본래의 상태로 되돌리기 어렵기에, 당장 안전성이 보장되지 않는 한 원전 오염수의 해양 방출은 반드시 막아야 한다. 본 논문은 일본과 한국이 원전 오염수 해양 방출 사안으로 빚은 갈등을 해결하기 위한 한국의 대응 전략을 제안한다. 한국은 일본과의 협력, 잠정조치, 주변국과의 공조를 통해 다양한 측면에서 일본의 원전 오염수 해양 방출에 대응해야 할 것이다.

  • 원자력시설의 사고시 대기중으로 누출된 방사성물질에 의해 오염된 토양으로부터 재배된 농작물로 인한 인체노출은 각종 환경오염물질에 의한 인체영향 연구결과에 보듯이 직접적인 방사능에 의한 인체노출 못지 않게 상당히 중요하다. 이러한 섭식경로를 통한 노출은 각 나라마다 서로 다른 토양조건 및 작물체종류의 다양성등 다른 양상을 보이고 있어, 연구가 수행된 미국이나 유럽등지의 평가방법을 그대로 사용하면 국내의 토양에서 재배되는 농작물이나 이를 이용한 축산물에 따른 한국인의 독특한 섭취양상을 충분히 고려하여 평가하기 어려울 수 있다.   • Recently, as the interest of the government and the public on energy saving has increased, the airtightness of buildings has been improved to improve the insulation performance of buildings. However, indoor air pollution due to increase of pollution source in indoor space and lack of ventilation is increasing and interest in indoor air quality is increasing. In 2003, the Ministry of Environment enacted and promulgated the Act on Indoor Air Quality Control in Multi-use Facilities. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive inert gas with colorless, tasteless and odorless nature. The concentration is high in a room where radon can not escape. Although lononggas is naturally occurring, it is not interested in living environment, but it is easily inhaled through human body through respiration and causes lung cancer in long-term exposure. Therefore, this study intends to carry out an experiment for the reduction of radon gas, which is the first carcinogen in indoor air pollution sources.

131I 치료입원실 폐기물 방사능 오염도 분석 및 자체처분가능일자 산출 (Determination of Self-Disposal date by the Analysis of Radioactive Waste Contamination for 1131I Therapy Ward)

  • Purpose: The treatment of thyroid cancer patients was continuously increased. According to the increment of thyroid cancer patients, the establishment of iodine therapy site was also increased in each hospital. This treatment involves the administration of radioactive iodine, which will be given in the form of a capsule. Therefore, protections and managements for radioactive source pollution and radiation exposure should be necessary for radiation safety. Among the many problems, the problem of disposing the radioactive wastes was occurred. In this study, The date for self-disposal for radioactive wastes, which were contaminated in clothes, bedclothes and trash, were calculated. Materials and Methods: The number of iodine therapy ward was 15 in Korea Institute of Radiological Medical and Sciences. Recently, 8 therapy wards were operated for iodine therapy patients and others were on standby for emergency treatment ward of any radiation accidents. Radioactive wastes, which were occurred in therapy ward, were clothes, bedclothes, bath cover for patients washing water and food and drink which was leftover by patients. Each sample was hold into the marinelli beaker (clothes, bedclothes, bath covers) and 90 ml beaker (food, drink, and washing water). The activities of collected samples were measured by HpGe MCA device (Multi Channel Analysis, CANBERRA, USA) Results: The storage period for the each kind of radioactive wastes was calculated by equation of storage periods based on the measurement outcomes. The average storage period was 60 days for the case of clothes, and the maximum storage period was 93 days for patient bottoms. The average storage period and the maximum storage period for the trash were 69 days and 97 days, respectively. The leftover foods and drinks had short storage period (the average storage period was 25 days and maximum storage period was 39 days), compared with other wastes. Conclusion: The proper storage period for disposing the radioactive waste (clothes, bedclothes and bath cover) was 100 days by the regulation on self-disposal of radioactive waste. In addition, the storage period for disposing the liquid radioactive waste was 120 days. The current regulation for radioactive waste self-disposing was not suitable for the circumstances of each radioactive therapy facility. Therefore, it was necessary to reduce the leftover food and drinks by adequate table setting for patients, and improve the process and regulation for disposing the short-half life radioactive wastes.

우리나라에서의 환경오염 관련 문헌분류 및 연구동향 (Trends of Study and Classification of Literatures on Environmental Pollution in Korea)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the valuable basic information that helps set the advanced direction of study in environmental pollution in the future. It classifies and analyzes 6, 531 papers according to their years, fields, and contents from 1962 to 1993 in Korea through Chunrian, a PC communication network, National Environment Research Institute(1989) in Seoul. Classifying papers by their fields, this study shows 19.6%(1, 281 papers) of total papers on water pollution, on which most emphasis was placed in the studies, 17.2%(1, 121 papers) on general remarks, 14.6%(952 papers) on environmental ecology, and 13.6%(891 papers) on air pollution. Classifying papers by their contents, this study tells us that the survey of state and evaluation of pollution degree took 28%(1, 829 papers) of total papers, and it seemed the most active study was carried out on this content. It then shows us that the treatment technology and mechanism shared 17.5%(1, 144 papers), and facilities and design took 1.9%(127 papers) which needed more studies in the future. As for the trends of study, the papers published until 1979 show that the water pollution accounted for 28.9% of total studies, on which the greatest emphasis was placed, while the papers in 1990s tell us that general remarks 34.7%, air pollution 14.9%, and water pollution 14.1%. It also shows that treatment technology and mechanism has had more importance since 1980s in water pollution, noise and vibration, waste materials, human wastes, and radioactive pollution. However, in sea pollution, policy and standard rather than treatment technology or method of measurement and analysis has been considered a more important one in 1990s. Analyzing the studies on general remarks, it tell us that the paper on environmental act, which were frequently conducted, accounted for 33.3% until 1979, while the papers on the environmental policy, in which the highest interest was kept, accounted 34.6% in 1990s. This study concludes that most papers had examined the survey on status and evaluation of pollution degree before 1980, while studies on solving the problems of environmental pollution have had more importance in the 1980s and 1990s. Therefore, in the future, more studies should be conducted actively on policy development to solve the problems of environment pollution as well as on encouragement of environmental consciousness.

  • 본 논문은 재난재해와 방사선 오염으로부터 안전한 농작물 관리를 위한 플랫폼, 그리고 식물 생장 모니터링 시스템을 제안하였다. 또한, 식물생장을 모니터링하여 식물공장 내에서 생장하는 식물의 크기를 효율적으로 측정할 수 있는 시스템을 개발하였다. 본 연구에 따른 기대효과는 첫째, 자연재해와 방사능오염 감시를 통해 신속하고 정확한 대처 기능으로 농산물 품질과 생산성 향상을 가져올 수 있다. 둘째, 식물의 크기 측정 데이터를 유지 관리하는데 소요되는 시간을 절약하여 경비를 절감할 수 있다. 마지막으로 식물 공장 관리자의 작업 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.

Gas ebullition associated with biological processes in radioactively contaminated reservoirs could lead to airborne radioactive contamination

  • Background: Storage reservoirs of radioactive waste could be the source of atmospheric pollution due to the efflux of aqueous aerosol from their water areas. The main mechanism of formation of aqueous aerosols is the collapse of gas bubbles at the water surface. In this paper, we discuss the potential influence of biological factors on gas ebullition in the water areas of the radioactively contaminated industrial reservoirs R-9 (Lake Karachay) and R-4 (Metlinsky pond) of the Mayak PA. The emission of the released non-dissolved gases captured with gas traps in reservoir R-9 was (88-290) ml/m2 per day (2015) and in reservoir R-4 (270-460) ml/m2 per day (2016). The analysis of gas composition in reservoir R-4 (60% methane, 35% nitrogen, 2.4% oxygen, 1.5% carbon dioxide) confirms their biological origin. It is associated with the processes of organic matter destruction in bottom sediments. The major source of organic matter in bottom sediments is the dying phytoplankton developing in these reservoirs. Conclusion: The obtained results form the basis to set a task to quantify the relationship between the phytoplankton development, gases ebullition and radioactive atmosphere contamination.
