  • We observed initial rusting process of steel containing Al under wet/dry cyclic condition with NaCl solution film using in situ X-ray diffraction spectroscopy at SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. It was found that mass fraction of iron oxides such as ${\alpha}-FeOOH$, ${\beta}-FeOOH$ and ${\gamma}-FeOOH$ varied with Al content. Some kinds of Al oxides were also found at the initial stage of corrosion. Those corrosion products might affect the corrosion process and corrosion rate of the steel.

  • Background: The use of radiation and radioisotopes in Korea has been increasing each year, and its impact on economy and industry is expected to be increasing progressively following the development of industrial technology and the expansion of their usage. To establish and supporting policies for industries using radiation and radioisotopes, it is necessary to check the status of related industries accurately, as well as to gather data required to establish plans for industrial development by studying both revenues and economic scale (contributing to revenue). Materials and Methods: To analyze the status of utilization, surveys were carried out on 6,621 organizations engaged in nuclear operations handling radiation and radioisotopes pursuant to the Nuclear Safety Act as of end 2014, on 33,471 medical institutions using radiation generators for medical and diagnostic purposes pursuant to the Medical Service Act, and on 2,218 organizations using radiation generators for animal diagnostics pursuant to the Veterinary License Act. Results and discussion: The overall status of the domestic radiation market including the number of user organizations, that of employees, and the size of distributions (imports, productions, and exports) with which the scale of domestic radiation market can be judged showed a growth trend compared to the previous year, though the number of employees for radiation operation in industrial sector, research sector, education sector, military sector, and power plants (nuclear power plants) and the size of imports was reduced somewhat. Conclusion: It is expected that data acquired through periodic surveys on the status of utilization would be utilized practically in establishing governmental policies related to the promotion of usage of radiation and radioisotopes, and also be utilized widely in cultivating and developing the industry efficiently to invigorate the related industries.

  • Background: It is necessary to assess radiation dose to workers due to inhalation of airborne particulates containing naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) to ensure radiological safety required by the Natural Radiation Safety Management Act. The objective of this study is to develop an internal dose assessment procedure for workers at industries using raw materials containing natural radionuclides. Materials and Methods: The dose assessment procedure was developed based on harmonization, accuracy, and proportionality. The procedure includes determination of dose assessment necessity, preliminary dose estimation, airborne particulate sampling and characterization, and detailed assessment of radiation dose. Results and Discussion: The developed dose assessment procedure is as follows. Radioactivity concentration criteria to determine dose assessment necessity are $10Bq{\cdot}g^{-1}$ for $^{40}K$ and $1Bq{\cdot}g^{-1}$ for the other natural radionuclides. The preliminary dose estimation is performed using annual limit on intake (ALI). The estimated doses are classified into 3 groups ( < 0.1 mSv, 0.1-0.3 mSv, and > 0.3 mSv). Air sampling methods are determined based on the dose estimates. Detailed dose assessment is performed using air sampling and particulate characterization. The final dose results are classified into 4 different levels ( < 0.1 mSv, 0.1-0.3 mSv, 0.3-1 mSv, and > 1 mSv). Proper radiation protection measures are suggested according to the dose level. The developed dose assessment procedure was applied for NORM industries in Korea, including coal combustion, phosphate processing, and monazite handing facilities. Conclusion: The developed procedure provides consistent dose assessment results and contributes to the establishment of optimization of radiological protection in NORM industries.

  • Industrial radiography practice is usually employed in public domain. Over the years there are several radiation accidents reported in this practice. The accidents often result in severe or fatal exposures to occupational workers and public. The number of radiation accidents is also significant when compared with other industrial accidents. This paper describes practice specific training as one of the measures to the improve radiation safety and reduce the accidents. The efforts by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to disseminate information and to improve the radiation safety status in industrial radiography are also discussed.

  • The numerical analysis of sound radiation by vibrating structure is a well known and mature technology used in many industries. Accurate methods based on the boundary or finite element method have been successfully developed over the last two decades and are now available in standard CAE tools. These methods are however known to require significant computational resources which, furthermore, very quickly increase with the frequency of interest. The low speed of most current methods is a main obstacle for a systematic use of acoustic CAE in industrial design processes. In this paper we are going to present a set of innovative techniques that significantly speed-up the calculation of acoustic radiation indicators (acoustic pressure, velocity, intensity and power; contribution vectors). The modeling is based on the well known combination of finite elements and infinite elements but also combines the following ingredients to obtain a very high performance: o a multi-frontal massively parallel sparse direct solver; o a multi-frequency solver based on the Krylov method; o the use of pellicular acoustic modes as a vector basis for representing acoustic excitations; o the numerical evaluation of Green functions related to the specific geometry of the problem under investigation. All these ingredients are embedded in the ACTRAN/AR CAE tool which provides unprecedented performance for acoustic radiation analysis. The method will be demonstrated on several applications taken from various industries.
