A Study on Dimensional Stability and Thermal Performance of Superheated Steam Treated and Thermal Compressed Wood

  • Recently, wood is attracting attention as green building interior decoration material. When wood is used as building interior decoration material, excellent dimensional stability and thermal performance is required. In this study, superheated steam treatment process and thermal compression process were applied to flat sawn Pinus koraiensis wood panel in order to improve dimensional stability and thermal performance. According to results of this study, superheated steam treatment process and thermal compression process improve thermal performance and dimensional stability of wood, especially in tangential direction. The spring back in radial direction reduces the effect of thermal compression on dimensional stability of wood in radial direction.

  • Acoustic performance of the absorptive mufflers used in air-conditioning and ventilating ducts, gas turbines, industrial fans influenced by the design parameters such as the length of mufflers, lining thickness, properties of the acoustic lining, and so forth. So we predicted the acoustic performance according to the design parameters. For the analysis, we assumed the radial propagation constant is locally reacted to the acoustic lining, and analyzed the acoustic performance based on the plane wave theory by using four-pole parameters.

Radial Performances of Spiral-Grooved Spherical Air Bearings (나선홈을 갖는 반구형 공기 베어링의 반경 방향 성능 측정)

  • This paper investigates the radial performance of self-acting spiral-grooved air bearing, used to support small high-speed rotating bodies. Repeatable runout, nonrepeatable runout, stiffness and supporting load are selected as the performance. The clearance between rotor and stator, the stator groove depth, and the rotating speed are chosen as three main parameters affecting the performances. Force application and displacement measurement are done in a noncontact manner, in order not to disturb operation: electromagnetic force is applied to the rotor and gap sensors are used to measure the displacement of the rotor. Experimental results show that repeatable runout decreases as speed, groove depth and clearance decrease. Nonrepeatable runout decreases as clearance decreases, and it has a minimum value at $5.5{\mu}m$ of grove depth and a maximum value at speed of 18.000rpm. Stiffness increases as speed increases and clearance decreases, and has a maximum value around $5.5{\mu}m$ of groove depth. The relationship between force and displacement is linear for small displacement, but becomes nonlinear for large displacement. Supporting load is linearly proportional to the stiffness, and it is a maximum value around $4.75{\mu}m$ of clearance.

Experimental and computational analysis of behavior of three-way catalytic converter under axial and radial flow conditions

  • The competition to deliver ultra-low emitting vehicles at a reasonable cost is driving the automotive industry to invest significant manpower and test laboratory resources in the design optimization of increasingly complex exhaust after-treatment systems. Optimization can no longer be based on traditional approaches, which are intensive in hardware use and laboratory testing. The CFD is in high demand for the analysis and design in order to reduce developing cost and time consuming in experiments. This paper describes the development of a comprehensive practical model based on experiments for simulating the performance of automotive three-way catalytic converters, which are employed to reduce engine exhaust emissions. An experiment is conducted to measure species concentrations before and after catalytic converter for different loads on engine. The model simulates the emission system behavior by using an exhaust system heat conservation and catalyst chemical kinetic sub-model. CFD simulation is used to study the performance of automotive catalytic converter. The substrate is modeled as a porous media in FLUENT and the standard k-e model is used for turbulence. The flow pattern is changed from axial to radial by changing the substrate model inside the catalytic converter and the flow distribution and the conversion efficiency of CO, HC and NOx are achieved first, and the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. It is found that the conversion from axial to radial flow makes the catalytic converter more efficient. These studies help to understand better the performance of the catalytic converter in order to optimize the converter design.

Radial Type Satellite Attitude Controller Design using LMI Method and Robustness Analysis (LMI 방법을 이용한 방사형 인공위성 제어로직 설계 및 강건성 분석)

  • The $H_{\infty}$ control theory using LMI method is applied to design an attitude controller of radial type satellite that has strongly coupled channels due to the large product of inertia. It is observed that the cross-over frequency of open-loop with $H_{\infty}$ controller is lower than that of open-loop without controller, which is not typical phenomenon in an optimal control design result: it is interpreted that due to a large product of inertia, there is certain limit in increasing agility of satellite by just tuning weighting function. ${\mu}$-analysis is performed to verify the stability and performance robustness with the assumption of +/-5% MOI variation. ${\mu}$-analysis result shows that the variation of principal MOI degrades the stability and performance robustness more than the variation of POI does.

  • The present experimental study deals with noise reduction and improvements in cooling performance in a plasma display panel(PDP) television (TV). To reduce the noise, the effects of installation parameters are studied. The experimental parameters under investigation are the distance between the fan and the rear case of a PDP TV, position of the strut on the fan, and the fan RPM. The variance of RPM is the most significant facto., and a 250 RPM decrease from 910 RPM causes about 4㏈(A) reduction in the system noise. To increase performance, flow characteristics are investigated by using a visualization technique and measuring the volume flow rate. The visualized results show that a radial direction flow due to large system resistance is significant, and an axial velocity oscillation is observed from the measurement of the volume flow rate. To prevent both a radial direction flow and an axial velocity oscillation, sponges are inserted in the space between f3n and the rear case. Inserted sponges improve the volume flow rate of cooling fans up to 32% since they convert a radial direction flow to an axial direction flow. Also an axial velocity oscillation with large amplitude and low RPM disappears. Increasing volume flow rate causes the PDP TV to improve its cooling performance. Additionally the same volume flow rate can be obtained with a decreased fan speed due to the inserted sponge. Noise reductions of 4.2 ㏈(A) at the rear and 1.1 ㏈(A) at the front of the TV are obtained by the decreased RPM. An increase of 10% of the volume flow rate is also achieved by inserting sponges.

  • The effect of the relative location between pre-swirl nozzle and receiver hole on the performance of radial on-board injection type pre-swirl system was analyzed. In this study, tendency of the change of discharge coefficient and temperature drop efficiency were analyzed for 20 design points through the combination of 5 pre-swirl nozzle location and 4 receiver hole location. Discharge coefficient of system tended to be similar to the pressure ratio of the pre-swirl nozzle. System performance variation occurred as the flow structure in the cavity was affected by the surface, and the influence of the stationary surface is greater than that of the rotating surface. Discharge coefficient of system changed -1.39% to 1.25% and temperature drop efficiency changed -5.41% to 2.94% refer to reference design point.

Performance Improvement of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks Using Adaptive Feature Extraction (적응적 특징추출을 이용한 Radial Basis Function 신경망의 성능개선)

  • This paper proposes a new RBF neural network that determines the number and the center of hidden neurons based on the adaptive feature extraction for the input data. The principal component analysis is applied for extracting adaptively the features by reducing the dimension of the given input data. It can simultaneously achieve a superior property of both the principal component analysis by mapping input data into set of statistically independent features and the RBF neural networks. The proposed neural networks has been applied to classify the 200 breast cancer databases by 2-class. The simulation results shows that the proposed neural networks has better performances of the learning time and the classification for test data, in comparison with those using the k-means clustering algorithm. And it is affected less than the k-means clustering algorithm by the initial weight setting and the scope of the smoothing factor.

Performance Analysis by CFD and Aerodynamic Design of 100kW Class Radial Turbine Using Waste Heat from Ship (선박 폐열을 이용한 100kW급 구심터빈 공력설계 및 CFD에 의한 성능해석)

  • The purpose of this study is to secure the design data for the optimization of the radial turbine and heat cycle system, by using the CFD analysis technique and the design of 100kW class radial turbine applicable to waste heat recovery generation system for ship. Radial turbine was comprised of scroll casing, vane nozzle with 18 blades and rotor with 13 blades, and analysis grid was used to about 2.3 million. Mass flow rate and rotational speed was 0.5kg/s, 75,0000rpm, respectively. Eight kinds of inlet pressure was set between 195 and 620kPa. As the flow accelerated through the nozzle passage to the throat, the pressure level at the pressure and suction sides becomed similar to about Mach number of 0.35. When the inlet temperature and pressure was $250^{\circ}C$, 352kPa respectively, the isentropic efficiency and mechanical power showed the analysis results of 74% and 108kW.

  • This paper compares performance characteristics and mechanical design specifications of outer rotor radial flux type and double-sided axial flux type permanent magnet generator for 1.5-kW class small scale wind power applications to suggest most suitable type. In order to analyze electromagnetic performances of two different type generators, this paper performs generating performance and efficiency characteristic analysis from electrical parameters obtained by using nonlinear finite element analysis using commercial software, electromagnetic losses characteristics equations and d-q characteristics equation. Considering the derived electromagnetic performance, mechanical design specifications and manufacturing cost, the best suitable model for 1.5-kW class wind power system is determined, and its experiment was performed to validate the suggested analysis method.
