Computer-based simulation and analysis is used extensively in engineering for a variety of tasks. Despite the steady and continuing growth of computing power and speed, the computational cost of complex high-fidelity engineering analyses and simulations limit their use in important areas like design optimization and reliability analysis. Statistical approximation techniques such as design of experiments and response surface methodology are becoming widely used in engineering to minimize the computational expense of running such computer analyses and circumvent many of these limitations. In this paper, we compare and contrast five experimental design types and four approximation model types in terms of their capability to generate accurate approximations for two engineering applications with typical engineering behaviors and a wide range of nonlinearity. The first example involves the analysis of a two-member frame that has three input variables and three responses of interest. The second example simulates the roll-over potential of a semi-tractor-trailer for different combinations of input variables and braking and steering levels. Detailed error analysis reveals that uniform designs provide good sampling for generating accurate approximations using different sample sizes while kriging models provide accurate approximations that are robust for use with a variety of experimental designs and sample sizes.

In this paper we present our work on the parameterized construction of virtual drivers' reach motion to seat belt, by using motion capture data. A user can generate a new reach motion by controlling a number of parameters. We approach the problem by using multiple sets of example reach motions and learning the relation between the labeling parameters and the motion data. The work is composed of three tasks. First, we construct a motion database using multiple sets of labeled motion clips obtained by using a motion capture device. This involves removing the redundancy of each motion clip by using PCA (Principal Component Analysis), and establishing temporal correspondence among different motion clips by automatic segmentation and piecewise time warping of each clip. Next, we compute motion blending functions by learning the relation between labeling parameters (age, hip base point (HBP), and height) and the motion parameters as represented by a set of PC coefficients. During runtime, on-line motion synthesis is accomplished by evaluating the motion blending function from the user-supplied control parameters.

In this paper, we propose vehicle license plate recognition system based on Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNNs) with the use of local binarization functions and canny edge algorithm. In order to detect the area of license plate and also recognize license plate numbers, binary images are generated by using local binarization methods, which consider local brightness, and canny edge detection. The generated binary images provide information related to the size and the position of license plate. Additionally, image warping is used to compensate the distortion of images obtained from the side. After extracting license plate numbers, the dimensionality of number images is reduced through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and is used as input variables to RBFNNs. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize a number of essential parameters needed to improve the accuracy of RBFNNs. Those optimized parameters include the number of clusters and the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM algorithm, and the orders of polynomial of networks. Image data sets are obtained by changing the distance between stationary vehicle and camera and then used to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

In this paper, we introduce the fingerprint recognition system based on Radial Basis Function Neural Network(RBFNN). Fingerprints are classified as four types(Whole, Arch, Right roof, Left roof). The preprocessing methods such as fast fourier transform, normalization, calculation of ridge's direction, filtering with gabor filter, binarization and rotation algorithm, are used in order to extract the features on fingerprint images and then those features are considered as the inputs of the network. RBFNN uses Fuzzy C-Means(FCM) clustering in the hidden layer and polynomial functions such as linear, quadratic, and modified quadratic are defined as connection weights of the network. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm optimizes a number of essential parameters needed to improve the accuracy of RBFNN. Those optimized parameters include the number of clusters and the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM algorithm, and the orders of polynomial of networks. The performance evaluation of the proposed fingerprint recognition system is illustrated with the use of fingerprint data sets that are collected through Anguli program.

An IKPCA-ELM-based intrusion detection method is developed to address the problem of the low accuracy and slow speed of intrusion detection caused by redundancies and high dimensions of data in the network. First, in order to reduce the effects of uneven sample distribution and sample attribute differences on the extraction of KPCA features, the sample attribute mean and mean square error are introduced into the Gaussian radial basis function and polynomial kernel function respectively, and the two improved kernel functions are combined to construct a hybrid kernel function. Second, an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal hybrid kernel function for improved kernel principal component analysis (IKPCA). Finally, IKPCA is conducted to complete feature extraction, and an extreme learning machine (ELM) is applied to classify common attack type detection. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the constructed hybrid kernel function. Compared with other intrusion detection methods, IKPCA-ELM not only ensures high accuracy rates, but also reduces the detection time and false alarm rate, especially reducing the false alarm rate of small sample attacks.

This work is focused on a parametric numerical study of the barrier's bar inclination shelter effect in crosswind scenario. The parametric study combines mesh morphing and design of experiments in automated manner. Radial Basis Functions (RBF) method is used for mesh morphing and Ansys Workbench is used as an automation platform. Wind barrier consists of five bars where each bar angle is parameterized. Design points are defined using the design of experiments (DOE) technique to accurately represent the entire design space. Three-dimensional RANS numerical simulation was utilized with commercial software Ansys Fluent 14.5. In addition to the numerical study, experimental measurement of the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle is performed in order to define the critical wind disturbance scenario. The wind barrier optimization method combines morphing, an advanced CFD solver, high performance computing, and process automaters. The goal is to present a parametric aerodynamic simulation methodology for the wind barrier shelter that integrates accuracy and an extended design space in an automated manner. In addition, goal driven optimization is conducted for the most influential parameters for the wind barrier shelter.
In the present work, we carried out a molecular dynamics study of the kinetic properties of the FLiNaK molten salt, as well as a detailed study of the structure of this salt melt. The high value of the self-diffusion coefficient of fluorine ions is due to the large number of Coulomb repulsions between the most numerous negative ions. The calculated values of shear viscosity are in good agreement with the experimental data, as well as with the reference data obtained on the basis of finding the most reliable data. The total and partial functions of the radial distribution are calculated. According to the statistical analysis, fluorine ions have the greatest numerical diversity in the environment of similar ions, and sodium ions with the lowest representation in FLiNaK, have the least such diversity. For the subsystem of fluorine ions, the rotational symmetry of the fifth order is the most pronounced. Some of the fluorine ions form linear chains consisting of three atoms, which are not formed for positive ions. The results of the work give an understanding of the behavior molten FLiNaK under operating conditions in a molten salt reactor and will find application in future studies of this molten salt.

In this study, we introduce a new architecture of fuzzy inference system. In the fuzzy inference system, we use Fuzzy C-Means clustering algorithm to form the premise part of the rules. The membership functions standing in the premise part of fuzzy rules do not assume any explicit functional forms, but for any input the resulting activation levels of such radial basis functions directly depend upon the distance between data points by means of the Fuzzy C-Means clustering. As the consequent part of fuzzy rules of the fuzzy inference system (being the local model representing input output relation in the corresponding sub-space), four types of polynomial are considered, namely constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. This offers a significant level of design flexibility as each rule could come with a different type of the local model in its consequence. Either the Least Square Estimator (LSE) or the weighted Least Square Estimator (WLSE)-based learning is exploited to estimate the coefficients of the consequent polynomial of fuzzy rules. In fuzzy modeling, complexity and interpretability (or simplicity) as well as accuracy of the obtained model are essential design criteria. The performance of the fuzzy inference system is directly affected by some parameters such as e.g., the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM, the number of rules(clusters) and the order of polynomial in the consequent part of the rules. Accordingly we can obtain preferred model structure through an adjustment of such parameters of the fuzzy inference system. Moreover the comparative experimental study between WLSE and LSE is analyzed according to the change of the number of clusters(rules) as well as polynomial type. The superiority of the proposed model is illustrated and also demonstrated with the use of Automobile Miles per Gallon(MPG), Boston housing called Machine Learning dataset, and Mackey-glass time series dataset.

In this study, Polynomial Radial Basis Function Neural Network(pRBFNN) based on Fuzzy Inference System is designed and its parameters such as learning rate, momentum coefficient, and distributed weight (width of RBF) are optimized by means of Particle Swarm Optimization. The proposed model can be expressed as three functional module that consists of condition part, conclusion part, and inference part in the viewpoint of fuzzy rule formed in 'If-then'. In the condition part of pRBFNN as a fuzzy rule, input space is partitioned by defining kernel functions (RBFs). Here, the structure of kernel functions, namely, RBF is generated from HCM clustering algorithm. We use Gaussian type and Inverse multiquadratic type as a RBF. Besides these types of RBF, Conic RBF is also proposed and used as a kernel function. Also, in order to reflect the characteristic of dataset when partitioning input space, we consider the width of RBF defined by standard deviation of dataset. In the conclusion part, the connection weights of pRBFNN are represented as a polynomial which is the extended structure of the general RBF neural network with constant as a connection weights. Finally, the output of model is decided by the fuzzy inference of the inference part of pRBFNN. In order to evaluate the proposed model, nonlinear function with 2 inputs, waster water dataset and gas furnace time series dataset are used and the results of pRBFNN are compared with some previous models. Approximation as well as generalization abilities are discussed with these results.
In this study, Radial Basis Function(RBF) Neural Networks Model, a kind of Hybrid Neural Networks was applied to hydrological forecasting in a small watershed. RBF Neural Networks Model has four kinds of parameters in it and consists of unsupervised and supervised training patterns. And Gaussian Kernel Function(GKF) was used among many kinds of Radial Basis Functions(RBFs). K-Means clustering algorithm was applied to optimize centers and widths which ate the parameters of GKF. The parameters of RBF Neural Networks Model such as centers, widths weights and biases were determined by the training procedures of RBF Neural Networks Model. And, with these parameters the validation procedures of RBF Neural Networks Model were carried out. RBF Neural Networks Model was applied to Wi-Stream basin which is one of the IHP Representative basins in South Korea. 10 rainfall events were selected for training and validation of RBF Neural Networks Model. The results of RBF Neural Networks Model were compared with those of Elman Neural Networks(ENN) Model. ENN Model is composed of One Step Secant BackPropagation(OSSBP) and Resilient BackPropagation(RBP) algorithms. RBF Neural Networks shows better results than ENN Model. RBF Neural Networks Model spent less time for the training of model and can be easily used by the hydrologists with little background knowledge of RBF Neural Networks Model.
