A Study on the Estimation of Ocean Surface Wave Information from Marine Radar Signals (선박 레이더 영상신호를 이용한 파랑정보 검출에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the system for evaluating the sea wave informations such as wave direction and wave length in real time, by using image data obtained from the marine X-band radar. We proposed here a method for automatic selection of the partial image data without the user's individual selection at the radar. We also discussed that the wave direction could be obtained by a 2-dimensional discrete Fourier transform algorithm. We carried some evaluation works on the algorithm through computer simulation. The obtained thirteen radar image data under several sea surface conditions were analyzed by the method described and the result was presented.

  • ARPA(Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) is a device to calculate CPA(closest point of approach)/TCPA(time of CPA), true course and speed of targets by vector operation of relative courses and speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop target acquisition and tracking technology for ARPA Radar implementation. After examining the previous studies, applicable algorithms and technologies were developed to be combined and basic ARPA functions were developed as a result. As for main research contents, the sequential image processing technology such as combination of grayscale conversion, gaussian smoothing, binary image conversion and labeling was deviced to achieve a proper target acquisition, and the NNS(Nearest Neighbor Search) algorithm was appllied to identify which target came from the previous image and finally Kalman Filter was used to calculate true course and speed of targets as an analysis of target behavior. Also all technologies stated above were implemented as a SW program and installed onboard, and verified the basic ARPA functions to be operable in practical use through onboard test.

  • The payload can be classified as a passive and active type. Generally radar satellite to acquire specific information through various radar images will use the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) as active type payload. the principal of SAR satellite is to receive the signal returned from certain objects and/or surfaces in order to construct an radar image. The data acquired from the satellite in its real orbit shall be needed to perform successful CAL/VAL (Calibration & Validation) because the SAR satellite have to receive the returned signal for SAR image construction. In order to do the above, the returned signal shall be related to ground targets. Especially ground target is the corner reflector (CR) for CAL/VAL. Generally the reflector has various types and shapes. Their selection can be dependent on characteristics and mission objectives of SAR satellite. In this paper, reflector focused on the optimal case and effective case has been studied and then the trihedral corner reflector under this study has been designed and its performance also analyzed.

Application of deep convolutional neural network for short-term precipitation forecasting using weather radar-based images

  • In this study, a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model is proposed for short-term precipitation forecasting using weather radar-based images. The DCNN model is a combination of convolutional neural networks, autoencoder neural networks, and U-net architecture. The weather radar-based image data used here are retrieved from competition for rainfall forecasting in Korea (AI Contest for Rainfall Prediction of Hydroelectric Dam Using Public Data), organized by Dacon under the sponsorship of the Korean Water Resources Association in October 2020. This data is collected from rainy events during the rainy season (April - October) from 2010 to 2017. These images have undergone a preprocessing step to convert from weather radar data to grayscale image data before they are exploited for the competition. Accordingly, each of these gray images covers a spatial dimension of 120×120 pixels and has a corresponding temporal resolution of 10 minutes. Here, each pixel corresponds to a grid of size 4km×4km. The DCNN model is designed in this study to provide 10-minute predictive images in advance. Then, precipitation information can be obtained from these forecast images through empirical conversion formulas. Model performance is assessed by comparing the Score index, which is defined based on the ratio of MAE (mean absolute error) to CSI (critical success index) values. The competition results have demonstrated the impressive performance of the DCNN model, where the Score value is 0.530 compared to the best value from the competition of 0.500, ranking 16th out of 463 participating teams. This study's findings exhibit the potential of applying the DCNN model to short-term rainfall prediction using weather radar-based images. As a result, this model can be applied to other areas with different spatiotemporal resolutions.

  • The back projection histogram method has been proposed as the method to construct an image from waves reflected from a buried object for subsurface radar. This method is compose of two phases, i.e., a back projection image construction process and a back projection image superposition process. A simulation analysis of this method has been studied. In this paper, an experimental study is demonstrated in air as the homogeneous Held using three cylinders as buried objects.

  • Significant research has been conducted on the W-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system that utilizes the 77 GHz frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) radar. To reconstruct the high-resolution W-band SAR image, it is necessary to transform the point cloud acquired from the stereo cameras or the LiDAR in the direction of 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) and apply them to the SAR signal processing. However, there are difficulties in matching images due to the different geometric structures of images acquired from different sensors. In this study, we present the method to extract an optimized depth map by obtaining 6 DOF of the point cloud using a gradient descent method based on the entropy of the SAR image. An experiment was conducted to reconstruct a tree, which is a major road environment object, using the constructed W-band SAR system. The SAR image, reconstructed using the entropy-based gradient descent method, showed a decrease of 53.2828 in mean square error and an increase of 0.5529 in the structural similarity index, compared to SAR images reconstructed from radar coordinates.

  • This paper was studied in two ways with respect to the information received from the video signal separation technique of PPI Scop radar device. The proposed technique consists in generating an image signal through the video signal separation and synthesis, symbol generation, the residual image signal generation process. This technology can greatly improve the operating convenience with improved ease of discrimination, screen readability for the operator in analyzing radar information. The first proposed method was constructed for high-speed FPGA-based information processing systems for high speed operation stability of the system. The second proposed method was implemented intelligent algorithms and a software algorithm function curve associated resources.This was required to meet the constraints on the radar information, analysis system. Existing radar systems have not the frame data analysis unit image. However, this study was designed to image data stored in the frame-by-frame analysis of radar images with express information MPEG4 video. Key research content is to highlight the key observations expresses the target, the object-specific monitoring information to the positive image processing algorithm and the function curve delays. For high-definition video, high-speed to implement data analysis and expressing a variety of information was applied to the ARM Processor Support in Pro ASIC3.

An Adaptive Iterative Algorithm for Motion Deblurring Based on Salient Intensity Prior

  • In this paper, an adaptive iterative algorithm is proposed for motion deblurring by using the salient intensity prior. Based on the observation that the salient intensity of the clear image is sparse, and the salient intensity of the blurred image is less sparse during the image blurring process. The salient intensity prior is proposed to enforce the sparsity of the distribution of the saliency in the latent image, which guides the blind deblurring in various scenarios. Furthermore, an adaptive iteration strategy is proposed to adjust the number of iterations by evaluating the performance of the latent image and the similarity of the estimated blur kernel. The negative influence of overabundant iterations in each scale is effectively restrained in this way. Experiments on publicly available image deblurring datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves state-of-the-art deblurring results with small computational costs.

Modeling and Analysis of Radar Target Signatures in the VHF-Band Using Fast Chirplet Decomposition (고속 Chirplet 분리기법을 이용한 VHF 대역 레이더 표적신호 모델링 및 해석)

  • Although radar target signatures(RTS), such as range profiles have played an important role for target recognition in the X-band radar, they would be less effective when a target is designed to have low radar cross section(RCS). Recently, a number of research groups have conducted the studies on the RTS in the VHF-band where such targets can be better detected than in the X-band. However, there is a lack of work carried out on the mathematical description of the VHF-band RTS. In this paper, chirplet decomposition is employed for modeling of the VHF-band RTS and its performance is compared with that of existing scattering center model generally used for the X-band. In addition, the discriminative signal analysis is performed by chirplet parameterization of range profiles from in an ISAR image. Because the chirplet decomposition takes long computation time, its fast form is further proposed for enhanced practicality.

  • We have proposed a method to detect and track moving ships using position from Radar and image processor. Real-time segmentation of moving regions in image sequences is a fundamental step in the radar-camera integrated system. Algorithms for segmentation of objects are implemented by composing of background subtraction, morphologic operation, connected components labeling, region growing, and minimum enclosing rectangle. Once the moving objects are detected, tracking is only performed upon pixels labeled as foreground with reduced additional computational burdens.
